i find the jabs at younger ppl unnecessary (on the lines of "young people nowadays don't know x about y"). there is a gay character who is portrayed in a very one dimensional way. additionally, to have the big bad as a british man is entirely too predictable and clichéd. does this book deal with serious issues? yes. is it badly written? no. still, i can't say that i found the writing captivating or the story particularly memorable
A somewhat drawn out read about MeToo that strangely feels dated now. I appreciate that this was based Winnie M Li's experiences and had no problem connecting with the emotions of the protagonist, but I just felt there was too many exposition and detailed minutiae about the daily grind of movie making, and the book felt diary-like with the protagonist describing her daily job. There just wasn't enough suspense and steam to get me hooked. I felt like the story didn't pick up until the last 25%, but by then it felt too late.
I think the problem we know what the outcome is with Harry Weinstein, so unfortunately parts of it felt predictable.
A Devastating Toxicity…
Behind the glitz and the glamour lurks a devastating toxicity that has been mostly ignored. Look the other way seems to be the message of the day. It doesn’t exist. Except that, of course, it does. Sarah Lai is there to teach about Hollywood - it’s secrets but mostly it’s lies. She’s a survivor, after all. Sharp and edgy with a message that counts and a compelling narrative which is both powerful and credible.
Complicit takes stark look at the men in power scenario and the idea of being "Complicit" in abuse, mostly by looking in the other direction
It is a powerful drama, set in the glitz and glamour of the movie industry, where beneath the sparkling surface darkness lurks.
It is hugely compelling, the author takes a wide focus here whilst also honing in on the issues with pin point precision through the eyes of her main protagonist.
Intriguing, disturbing, beautifully done. Recommended
Ummmm WHAT?! Wow, you guys… this book totally blew away any expectations I had, and I absolutely loved it! This ends up being such a great story, and I think I spent the last 40 minutes of the book with my mouth hanging open!
This is a compelling read following the MeToo movement. Sarah Lai teaches about filmmaking in a college in NYC, but many years ago she was a film producer when she suddenly left. Now she’s been approached by a journalist, and with news coming about the man who once her mentor, she tells all...
Parallel with the current events of MeToo are quite strong with this one, which is more of a character driven read than a plot one. Nonetheless it was a fascinating look into the world of filmmaking and a toxic work environment.
Complicit by winnie M Li.
You know what it's like.
A comment here, a closed door there, turning a blind eye to get ahead. My name is Sarah Lai. You won't have heard of me. A decade ago I was on the cusp of being a big deal. But that was a long time ago.
This was a good read. Good story and characters. I expected more from the blurb though. 4*.
I enjoyed this book it was well written with a compelling storyline and a decent amount of character developement. The message of the story was powerful and punchy and confirmed what most people expect of Hollywood that is brushed under the red carpet and blinded by the dazzling flashes of paparazzi cameras.
An enjoyable read.
This has all the components that you would expect when reading this blurb, yet somehow I still expected more.
This felt a bit reactive to the aftermath of everything that has since been found out by the film industry, and feels a bit behind the times rather than ahead of it.
