Gosh, this book has everything I love! Deliciously morally grey characters, magic, betrayal and political intrigue; Violet Made of Thorns in a truly brilliant YA novel.

As the Seer to the King, Violet will manipulate and lie to ensure she cling on to her position in court. She needs to ensure that "Charming" Prince Cyrus is married before the end of the Summer and is willing to sugar coat her visions to push him in the right direction. An ancient curse, cursed nightmares and lots of plot twists ensured that I really couldn't put this book down.

Chen takes all the Fairytale troupes and uses them cleverly in this novel. You're constantly second guessing the motives of the characters who will do whatever it takes to keep themselves at the top while war and destruction looms ever closer. I loved Violet's character and the endless snipping with Prince Cyrus and I'm seriously hoping there'll be a sequel as I really need to know what's going to happen next.

Fans of the Cruel Prince would really enjoy this novel. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this amazing novel!

Thanks to Netgalley, Gina Chen and Hodder and Stoughton for an advanced copy of Violet Made of Thorns in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked this - Violet is sassy, Cyrus is pretenious, the writing style is really good too. My biggest gripe is that I have to wait for the sequel!!

I’d like to start out by thanking Netgalley and the publisher, Hodder & Stoughton, for providing me with an ARC, in exchange for an honest review.

Violet Made of Thorns is a wickedly enchanting fantasy debut, and definitely for anyone who loves books that remind them of fairytales. Whilst the beginning was a tad slow, I breezed through the rest of the book with ease, and am now left with a gaping void in my soul, that can only be filled with the sequel.

Let’s start out with one of my favorite aspects: the characters and their dynamics. Violet was an incredibly captivating protagonist and quickly cemented herself as one of my favorites. She’s cunning and very self serving, in a way that girls in fiction rarely get to be, especially when they’re also the (anti)heroine. And even though she’s selfish, you fully understand why she is, in a way that also makes you sympathize with her a great deal. She was such a compelling character and I enjoyed every moment spent in her head.

What makes the story even more compelling is her relationship with Cyrus, the prince. Now the author herself pitched their relationship as “I can fix her” meets “I can make him worse” and it was, it really was and it was perfect. I, like many others, love enemies-to-lovers relationships, and especially theirs. I think a part of what made them so compelling to me is that you couldn’t quite tell which of the two they were, even as they started getting together. To me they became kind of enemies AND lovers at the same time, as I wasn’t quite sure if they were going to kiss or kill each other. Their banter was also wonderful and refreshing, and I loved every scene where the two of them interacted.

The buildup was, as I mentioned, quite slow. But not so much that it really bothered me though, especially with the amount of twists and turns further into the story, as well as an ending that really packs a punch and I’m very excited to see where this story goes in the sequel.

On the occasion of Gina Chen's debut with her book Violet Made of Thorns out on July 26, I want to write the review thanks to the ARC that was provided to me by Netgalley, Gina Chen and Hodder & Stoughton. All opinions are mine.

A simple sentence is enough to convince you to read it: a morally gray witch/seer involved in a love/hate relationship with a cursed prince.

Now let's move on to the actual review:
I must admit that at first it took me a while to be captured by the story, but when it happened, I felt transported into a fairy tale and I couldn't stop reading!

The beginning of the story is quite slow, the protagonists and the history of the world and the city are introduced, but the more you continue reading the more dark and mysterious things become until a truly interesting and unpredictable ending that leaves interesting possibilities for a promising second book full of adventure!

In addition to being a dark and mysterious fairy tale, this book is also a source of lots of laughter and fun thanks to the stormy relationship between the two main protagonists: Violet, the bored and somewhat liar seer and Cyrus, the cursed prince (and he has red hair !!).

I loved these two characters so much! Violet is literally a mood and I see myself in it a lot because I am a little bit like that too, she is cynical, morally gray and she is angry with everyone and everything! While Cyrus is, let's say, less present than Violet in the story but I loved all the scenes where he argued with Violet and I loved what he did for the plot and for Violet.

Speaking in terms of romance, it’s present in the right amount and is a purely hate to love romance super messed up, full of quarrels and hate, but also with some glimmer of tenderness, sweet phrases and love.
In addition, if you love the “boy falls first” trope, you should read the book immediately.

Said that, the writer, to describe the dynamics of the book, said that in a nutshell it is a mix between the trope "I can fix her" and the trope "I can make him worse" and I love everything about this!

Speaking of the cast, I also liked the supporting characters and Princess Camilla is the undisputed queen of the cast.

The only flaw, even if it is not a real flaw, is the Asian representation that I thought was more present since the protagonist comes from the Moon district (like the China Town of the city) but this lack did not take anything away from the story which is still very very enjoyable.

I was really satisfied by reading this book: wonderful characters, my favourite tropes, an engaging plot and a dark and fairy tale setting, literally everything perfect!
Even the cover is literally a piece of art, exhibit it in a museum pleaseee!

3.95/5

I really enjoyed this book - finished the second half in one sitting (which is a rare thing for me considering how slow of a reader I am)

Violet Made of Thorns is advertised as The Cruel Prince meets Serpent and Dove, and I can definitely see it: the vibes of TCP (MC also slightly reminded me of Jude) and romance as a mix of TCP and S&D.

I would describe this book as fantasy romance, so if you like that - this book is for you! It’s not exactly slow burn, so I didn’t see much chemistry in the relationship of Violet and Cyrus. It was mostly physical, so I was kinda lost for most part (I am ace so sexual attraction as base for a relationship is just beyond me, sorry). Also, I feel like if you read TCP for romance and were disappointed bc of all the politics and slow burn, this is a book for you!

The characters were fleshed out for the most part, and I really liked some of them (especially side ones). There were many plot twists, especially at the end, that I really enjoyed. The only thing is that I would like to see more politics. I love fantasy politics. I also feel like all the relationships between characters could have been explored more in depth.

I really liked the ending, and am hoping that there will be a book two!

Violet is the royal seer, who often tells both prophecies and lies. The King asks her to tell false prophecies about the princes love life. Little do they know this awakens a curse. Violet must put either herself or the prince first, who can she save?

So for me, this story fell a bit flat for a number of reasons. I think the pacing at the beginning of the book was very slow, and didnt really grab my attention. Violet herself wasn’t my favourite main character ever either, which didnt help considering the book was entirely from her point of view. She came across too bitter and a bit whiny.

However i did like the romance side of the story, it was complete enemies to lovers, where theres a super fine line between love and hate. And Camilla was a character who saved this book. I loved her so much, she was the badass female, who didnt give a shit what anyone thought of her. Definitely my favourite character in the book.

The plotline itself was ok, seemed a bit all over the place at times, especially at the beginning where nothing was really happening. The last half was definitely better than the first half.

Many thanks to netgalley and hodder and staughton publishers for the e-arc in exchange for this honest review!

3.5 🌟

Overall this was a great debut novel. It had morally grey characters, witches, prophecy, curses, glamour and especially a love/hate romance.

I loved that this book was written in first person. It allowed us to get into the head of Violet and see how she survived all these years and where her intentions are coming from.

There was a bit more romance than I expected, being a YA fantasy, which I really enjoyed. Violet and Cyrus are the epitome of 'I hate that I want you', and just because they want each other, does not mean they trust each other.

The book really started strong and had a great and easy writing style. However I wish that it had more excitement in the middle and not just at the end. Even after a while, I was still waiting for the action and to see where the book was heading. I also was waiting for Violet to really show her true colours and do something a little more wicked.

While I liked the take on fairies and the magic system, I did get a little confused at times with the world building and political aspect.

Despite the mixed review, I would still recommend this book, especially to fans of the Cruel Prince series. I am still very much planning on picking up the next book in the series and am curious to see where the story does.

This book will be released on 26 July. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this eArc in exchange for an honest review.

Violet, the court Seer, is cool and calculating when divining the future but she's not always honest in what she foresees. As she twists truths to allow the King to manipulate the kingdom, his son, Prince Cyrus plots to strip her of her title once he ascends the throne. When the King asks her to falsely predict Cyrus' love story, Violet awakens a dreaded curse. But there's a thin line between love and hate and as Violet and Cyrus give in to temptation they must try to work together to figure out who the real threat is to their kingdom.

A morally grey and extremely cynical anti-heroine? I was sold on that alone before I knew the plot! I definitely felt the Jude vibes from The Cruel Prince mixed with some Alessandra from The Shadows Between Us. There are various fairytale elements too, like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. I find the middle of the book has more of a focus on the two main characters. I really enjoyed this book - I loved Violet's sarcasm and humour as well as her honesty. This is a YA book but there's tension between Violet and Cyrus and some small but of spice. I do feel like the side characters could have been fleshed out a bit more - there's alot of potential there - and I'd have liked some more clarity on the magic system. But I know there is time for that in the next book and I'm looking forward to it. Thank you to Hodderscape and NetGalley for the ARC!

What an incredible fantasy novel. I absolutely loved the whole anti-heroine element - you want to route for the MC but actually, you really do doubt her motives. I really liked the MC to be honest, the constant dilemma on going in her mind: do you put yourself first or the rest of the community,

This is enemies-to-lovers but also it's not. It doesn't go the way you think it would but you are still captured by the story and want to know what is going to happen.

The whole world building was just amazing and I loved the magic. a Seer Witch!? hell yeah!

there are some amazing quotes I this novel as well. they are just beautiful.

Would highly recommend this, such a beautiful fantasy!

Witches and magical creatures, prophecy and fate, a morally gray heroine, enemies to lovers - this book ticks a lot of boxes I love!

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark and modern fairtytale, following Violet the seer as she tries to understand the curse that hangs over the kingdoms prince, deciding whether she should do what's best for herself and for her king. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys romantic fantasy.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

Violet Made of Thorns is a story I'd been looking forward to reading since before the UK publisher had even been announced. Morally grey characters with hate/love romance and fairytale vibes? Of course I was hooked on that idea! And Gina Chen delivers in this 100%.

Our main character, Violet, is a morally grey witch who can see the future. Once an orphan who is just trying to survive, she was able to foresee a future where the Prince is killed, leading her to save him and gain a position in the palace due to her innate powers.

Prince Cyrus grows apart from her the longer she’s in the palace, he can’t stand the person she becomes as she happily lies for the king to keep her position as his Seer. Cyrus’ main issue is her ambition that drives her to do this… but that ambitious streak had been there since she planned to save him because she knew he looked important.

I loved Violet’s attitude throughout, she’s very realistic around the world around her and understands that the world is run by wolves. Cyrus, in stark contrast, is a boy prophesied by a former Seer to bring ruin and yet he’s an optimistic ray of sunshine who only wants peace…well, peace and Violet. Or sometimes he just wants Violet gone. He’s understandably confused about wanting a forbidden love who has come to represent all he dislikes about the court. If you enjoyed the romance in The Cruel Prince, just go and preorder this book right now because you won’t be disappointed at all.

If you enjoy fairytale stories or royal court set stories, you’ll really enjoy this book. If you enjoy both, you’ll likely fall in love with the world like I did.

The story is told from Violet’s point of view, so we get extremely sassy descriptions of members of the court and those who comment on the court gossip and scandals. Overall, Violet is headstrong and not afraid to dance around things to achieve things for herself. Some of the things she had the guts to say had me almost cheering for her, and although she's unrelatable in the sense of being more of an antiheroine rather than a typical either sweet or courageous main character in a fairytale... I genuinely would love to be more like Violet. She comes across as sassy and confident and I loved seeing that!

Other notable characters, who I enjoyed so much I'd happily read more about them in a side story, are Camilla (Cyrus' female twin) and Dante (Cyrus and Violet's close friend from another land). Camilla is another character who goes against the typical portrayal of royalty, her main interest lies in who she can lie with and she's a hilarious character. Also, she's one of my favourite sapphic Princesses now. Dante is... a busy scholar. His reactions throughout to Cyrus and Violet are mostly similar to that of an exasperated parent.

In terms of content, there is a little spice (helping to add to the existing romance subplot) and a couple of scenes during which the main character intentionally cuts herself (for magical purposes).

I think this story is the start of duology, and honestly I just hope we get treated to even more than just one more book in this world because Chen has created an enchanting world with a well of magic and an array of amazing characters, it's hard to believe that this is a debut.

BOOK REVIEW: Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen

2 Stars

I am so disappointed with this book. I was expecting a gripping story with an anti heroine and enemies to lovers but instead it was a huge let down.

The worldbuilding was my biggest issue. There was no real foundation and the world wasn't built well. Instead random things were added at completely odd times. There were dragons and fairies and witches and it felt medieval but there was also pistols and other objects that didn't link to that setting. The magical creatures were just there and not used to their potential and I have no idea why dragons were introduced when we heard basically nothing about them. The story itself was quite boring, very obvious and didn't inspire my imagination at all.
The characters were okay. The lead female Violet was my favourite and even she annoyed me most of the time. I loved her independent side but got really fed up of her contrary nature. I just wanted to shake her. The Prince was a pretty shallow character, had no real depth and the most interesting thing about him were his abs and his bickering with Violet. The "romance" wasn't enemies to lovers and it never felt realistic, only forced.

The writing was fine, although it had the tendency to go on a bit and so I did get rather bored and had to skim read some parts.
Overall I was really disappointed in the lack of worldbuilding and imagination plus the fact there were some interesting things (Seers and fairies) that weren't used to their full potential.
Sadly I won't be continuing this series.

Please note that I was #gifted this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

This is the perfect book for anyone who loved The Cruel Prince, I don't like to compare books to one another too much but since Jude and Cardan I have been looking for a dark romance that doesn't breach into kinks but has a true underlying hatred and this fits that trope perfectly!

This book is gripping and hits deep. The plot is ever changing where you start out is miles from where you finish, what you think is right, is not, you won't know who to trust and how characters will react and it was just a brilliant read.

World building is good, a strong sense of the lay of the land and a rich sense of differing classes.
The lore for me could have been a little more detailed, I believe this is the first in a series, at least I hope it is as there is a lot more that could be unpacked as a series in terms of its magical history, you can see the research and development is there.
I would love to hear more of Violets background and other seers with her gift as they largely don't communicate with one another in this book. There are other characters that could also be delved into more and the ending certainly lends to what could be an incredible series.

Violets train of thought was at times erratic/up and down/unpredictable. This could be put down to her development throughout the book but at times I found her making choices I really hadn't expected, compared with how she had been thinking. However, I don't think I can decide that this is a bad thing as it is what kept me reading and I really enjoyed that I almost hated Cyrus as much a Violet.

If you love a push and pull relationship, curses and royal shenanigans you need to read this book, one of my favourites this year!
Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder and Stoughton and author Gina Chen for providing me with a fantastic reading experience.

Violet Made of Thorns was a spunky, highly entertaining YA fantasy that I’m sure will be a smash-hit.

It has been a while since I have sat down and just read a YA fantasy book. This one filled every last box on my ticklist. I mean, we have an interesting and developed fantasy world, full of court politics and fascinating magical abilities. We have an exploration of the power of prophecy, which is personally one of my favourite abilities, and this allows for a thought-provoking exploration of fate and the price of defying it. It has that classic fairytale vibe, but unlocks a totally new and intriguing story.

On top of this, you have a fantastic protagonist in the form of Violet. I loved how unlikable she was at times, prickly, defensive and out for her own survival at all times. She had such an arresting voice that really hooked me in and made me root for her, despite her actions at times. Behind that facade is a scared child, always cautious of being abandoned once more. She is trying to survive and navigate the shifting sets of power within the court, particularly with nefarious plots going on beneath the surface. Also, the dynamic between her and Cyrus was so good to read. It was enemies to lovers, with an emphasis on enemies, but it just sizzled. Every scene crackled with the tension and unspoken longing between the two, disguised with insults and political machinations. Add into that dynamic the deadly curse Violet foresees and you truly have a recipe for success.

Violet Made of Thorns was a scorching YA fantasy that perfectly matches the heatwave sweeping the country. It is fiery, fantastic and ferocious with a protagonist you will not forget.

Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.

Our morally grey heroine, Violet is a Seer. Seven years ago she saved the prince from the death and with that she changed Cyrus destiny, and now the fates want a payback for this mistake.

The beginning of the book was a bit slow building up, which I understood when it comes to a fantasy book. I don’t remember much about the world building. I haven’t read a fantasy book for a long time now so my brain couldn’t focus on the magical world building.

It says that it’s a good book for ‘The Cruel Prince’ fans, and this line convinced me quickly. Although Violet and Cyrus gave me Jude and Cardan vibe in some parts, their feelings weren’t clear. They hated and threatened each other one minute and the next they made out for absolute no reason. If I had a reason to say they were in love or anything I’d had say ok i liked that, but I couldn’t follow there thinking.

Violet doesn’t trust anyone and this made her lie most of the times and in the and she was surprised that it all came back to her in a bad way.
Cyrus was not the best love interest I’ve read about, he was just handsome and cocky and so not ready to be a kind even though in the end of the book he became one.

About the end. All happened in a rush. The story turned out to be a real fairy tale, love won, the world was on fire, betrayals discovered, people died. And I wanted so bad badly Violet out of the picture. I was happy when she finally realised she need to leave and afterall she stayed, just so her selfish self could be a ruler. Did not like that. Cyrus should’ve let her go for a while. :)

I didn’t really like all of the plot but overall it was pretty interesting and captivating so I will pick up the next book for sure.

If I'm being honest, this story is very forgettable. I would literally forget what happened in the previous scene as I move onto the next chapter. The author would literally not touch upon what happened either which is kind of annoying and weird- how can previous occurrences be that insignificant that they're not brought up again?

I also had a huge issue with Cyrus' character. We were definitely NOT introduced to him properly. I felt like all these characters had been placed at that moment in time and there was no history between them besides one (or, very rarely, two) important events in the past. As a result, the relationships were extremely shallow. I only started getting a proper feel for Violet's character by the end of the book. I'm also wondering the actual point of the plot as well. I think the characters are probably younger than I'm envisioning (I don't believe ages were mentioned), so that's probably the explanation for a lot of things. Overall, it's an OK read. Might be good if you want to scratch that fantasy-retelling-but-not-really itch.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with this copy.

Thank you Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for providing me an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.

A bit of Cinderella. A pinch of Beauty and the Beast. And a fairytale in it's own right.

In Violet made of Thorns we follow Violet Lune, a wild, sharp-tongued, non-apologetic Seer. She's clever and quick-thinking, not afraid to lie and manipulate the truth to keep her position.
She's been in service to the crown since she was a little girl, after saving the crown prince's life when they were young. But a life is owed and the Fates are clear on that.

A curse rests on Prince Cyrus, her former friend and...thorn in her eye. Excuse the pun. He refuses to get married to break the curse and save the kingdom from falling. The longer they wait, the more trouble rears it's head. The fairywood slowly becomes impossible to control. Monsters emerge and war is moments away from arriving at their doorstep.

This book exceeded my expectations and often I felt like I was reading a classic fairytale. If fairytales had semi-graphic spice...

I loved the whole cast of characters. Violet, an anti-hero, looking out for herself first and foremost. Cyrus. Prince Charming is a perfect nickname for this cocky, frustratingly swoon worthy prince.

The worldbuilding I wish we would've explored more. We hear of conflict in and with other places, but stay firmly in the capital of the Kingdom. I hope that if we get a sequel, that we go into the fairywoods and neighboring lands.

A book I couldn't put down. Violet is an amazing heroine, witch, seer as you like. Her no hold comments to the Prince, her portrayl of girl power made for an interesting read. I just love her use of 'Pincey'. The world building was perfect, and the interlinking fairy tales made the story perfect. Maleficent, The Beast, Sleeping Beuaty and the thorns, faires and magic. A perfect Fanatsy story for all.

Violet Made Thorns is a ya fantasy novel with an enemies-to-lovers subplot between a morally grey witch and a cursed prince. This is one of those books which I throughly enjoyed reading but don’t remember too much about afterwards. It was a good, entertaining read with interesting take on magic and likable characters. It was pretty much what I hoped for, neither more nor less. I wasn’t completely captivated by the story or felt this huge loss when the book ended. But I enjoyed reading it and that’s pretty much what I want from a book.
