**Review of "Cosplay" by Mikko (Script) and Maribel Conejero (Art)**
Rating: 3/5
In "Cosplay," Mikko's engaging script and Maribel Conejero's dynamic art team up to deliver a whimsical adventure set against the backdrop of a geek heaven: Comic-Kon. Abel, our protagonist, is a dedicated cosplayer with dreams of winning the coveted cosplay contest dressed as Batman. However, what starts as a quest for cosplay glory takes an unexpected turn when a real-life spy drama unfolds at the convention.
Abel, along with his eclectic group of friends, finds themselves thrust into a whirlwind of espionage, chases, and double-crosses when an intelligence operation disrupts their convention bliss. As they navigate this unexpected adventure, they discover that the qualities of heroism go beyond costumes and fandom.
Mikko's script cleverly blends the excitement of cosplay culture with the thrill of a spy thriller, offering readers a fast-paced narrative filled with humor and heart. The characters, from Abel to his friends, are relatable and endearing, each bringing their own quirks and passions to the story. Maribel Conejero's art complements the script perfectly, capturing the vibrancy of Comic-Kon and the action-packed sequences with dynamic flair.
While "Cosplay" entertains with its playful premise and energetic artwork, it occasionally struggles to balance the lighthearted cosplay elements with the more serious spy plot. The transitions between these tones can feel abrupt at times, potentially unsettling the otherwise engaging flow of the narrative.
Overall, "Cosplay" is a delightful read that celebrates friendship, heroism, and the colorful world of cosplay. It's a story that will resonate with fans of both geek culture and thrilling adventures, offering a unique blend of fantasy and espionage that keeps readers entertained from start to finish.
Thank you to Netgalley and Europe Comics for the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel. This was a fantastic graphic novel if you want a mix of superheroes and cosplay. I think it was a lot of fun and intriguing, however, towards the end it felt like it was being rushed and shortening the story. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars.
I an unable to review this title, as it was archived before I had a chance to download and read it. This feedback is only to stop this title from adversely affecting my netgalley feedback rate. If in the future I have the opportunity to read this title, I will post a proper review here.
Really loved the artwork and the fandom easter eggs that were thrown around. The story was great, and honestly I hope there might be a sequel in the future. As a cosplayer, it made me incredibly happy to see cosplayers be actual heroes!
Abel is heading to Comic-Kon with his friends aiming to win the cosplay category with his homemade Batman costume. But things go sideways when a "whistleblower" infiltrates the backstage of Comic-Kon and enlists the cosplayers there to keep him out of the hands of government agents. But when the cosplayers figure out his scheme then they have to really act as heroes. A fun, exciting chance for folks to get to act out their fantasies in real life for once! A fun read for geeks, nerds, and anyone else!
I was provided with a complementary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It had some cute moments, and I did enjoy all the various characters that could be spotted throughout, but ultimately I did not care for it. There was a rather profound amount of stereotyping...especially from a book that seemed to be making an attempt to say something about judging people without really knowing them.
Those involved in Cosplay or fan culture will enjoy elements of this book. The inside jokes will make readers smile while validating a lifestyle that some people don't understand. Even the illustrations were a referential nod to classic comics. Unfortunately, the characters did not seem fully developed, occasionally coming across as mean-spirited, and the pacing felt rushed. What I did like about it makes me excited for future work by this author and illustrator.
I was expecting something completely different when I thought about reading this comic.
I’ve never been to a convention, so I don’t know what it feels like to go to one, but I guess it’s not this at all. Also, considering that this is a comic book aimed mainly at teenage audiences, I did not like at all to find bullying, fat-shaming, a child who speaks to his parents in a totally disrespectful way and who goes so far as to say "I wish I was an orphan like Batman"... I didn’t quite like it.
The only good thing I see is the drawing and the continuous references to series, movies, anime...
I think the main reason for my rating was that it’s such a short book and there are so many different characters. It sometimes felt a bit rushed. I did really like the art!
This was a fun little read with some great artwork as well as plenty of pop culture references that'll have you looking like that meme of Leonardo Di Caprio!
Unfortunately I felt like the pacing could have used some work and the plot wasn't as solid as it could have been.
i really wanted to love this. i am a huge fan of conventions and the atmosphere at cons. i love to cosplay. i love the energy of reacting to others' cosplays. this book had a lot of fat shaming and that is not what cons are about.
This was a cute graphic novel. I really enjoyed the artwork and the references were fun too. I overall enjoyed this but wasn't wowed by it.
I love getting out of my preferred genres while reading and this seemed like a great graphic novel to break my reading up. I saw it on NetGalley while I was preparing for San Diego Comic Con and I just couldn’t help myself.
What I loved:
- Location, as someone who has only gone to cons in the states it was fun to see how cons work internationally.
- Characters, I really enjoyed how some of the characters were drawn to make them look like well known other characters (Gordon) and celebrities (Keanu)
- Underdog story, it is always hard to not root for the underdog and this story was all about the underdogs stepping up when needed
- Pop-culture references, as this is set at a con I loved all of the references especially the ones in the background that you really had to look for to notice
Overall this was a real fun graphic novel with all the aspects that I wanted for a story based in a con. If you want a quick read that is hard to put down please give this story a try and let your nerd flag fly!
I did not know what to expect when I picked up this book which ended up far surpassing my expectations. I loved this quick read featuring the bumbling teenage "heroes" saving the day even though the reveal upon reveal almost became excessive. I say that but it so fits the genre. Plus, even though the author had limited pages, she imbued her protagonist with such depth that you could not help but fall in love with him. I also appreciated the opportunity to read this translated work.
The illustrations are nice but I'm not a big fan of the story. Not too bad, but nothing exceptional either.
I think what strikes me most about this book is that these characters don't just wear a costume. They seem to be genuinely trying to embody the heroes the emulate. Characters aside you have to admit that comic con is a solid setting for this type of plot. With all of the costumes and special events, passersby dismiss most things as a stunt. It's an action oriented plot with a lot going for it visually.
I had a lot of trouble deciding about this one. On one hand, you have the target aged kids who really go for these super-hero-dress-up-and-act-like comics. One the other hand, here we have kids who are not at all trained to fight against the real baddies, or at least there was no real introduction about them that would make them stand out for me. And so, their efforts fail to be realistic or impress. The language was rather spicy too, so that filters out some of the younger readers whose parents would see it as a problem. I liked the artwork, though.
This "little" graphic novel packed quite the emotional punch. I adored "Cosplay" and thought it was such a timely graphic novel. In a time where superhero movies, television shows, and graphic novels are at their peak popularity, it was refreshing to see kids who love superheroes but also get a real look at what it means to be a hero.
This story is so carefully told and so wonderfully illustrated it is sure to be a hit with readers young and old. "Cosplay" is loaded with pop culture references that make the reader feel as though they are part of the team and are right in the thick of it with Abel and Co.
I would recommend "Cosplay" to anyone who is a fan of superheroes, adventure, and great friendships. We will definitely be adding several copies to our own library.
This was such a cute and thrilling book with a very wholesome cast of characters. The book is about a group of outcasts who all come together to save the comic con when some evil people attack the event. All I'm saying is that if would be an incredibls movie and I would love to see it someday!!!!
Thank you so much Netgalley for the advanced copy!
It was an okayish read. The characters were relatable, highly similar to the nerds, bullies, dorks we encounter in our day to day life. Bits and pieces of it was hilarious and their passion for cosplay was cute but I couldn't find myself caring much. The plot didn't seem very exciting. Though the beginning and ending was pretty good. Great choice if you want to pass time or read something light.
