Based in the Wild West, this comic book puts forth a number of diverse, strong female characters. All badass, all different from different walks of life. Different ages, races and experiences with one thing in common - they are surviving on their own in what appears to be a man's world.
I thoroughly enjoyed this comic - the art style is clean and the colouring was really vibrant. I could understand what was going on in every single panel and I found myself really intrigued by the storyline. The characters however are definitely the focal point. A British woman, a Native American, a young black girl who is a former slave, an older white lady (who is badass) and a black sex worker all coming together to form a group in one of their defence. The story felt very mature and some of the content was quite dark which I really enjoyed.
Many thanks to Europe Comics who provided an ARC of this volume via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
I honestly think the description gives up a little too much about what's happening in this part 1, even if out of context you might not understand, it might be too much of a spoiler anyway.
But overall, it was a good fast-paced comics, packed with actions. I liked how we came accross all different protagonist slowly and how they ended up helping each other even if they're completly different. It's a good group of women having to deal with Wild West awful thinking about women and mysogyny and sexism.
I'm really intrigued with what's going to happen next!
I'm not a fan of the art/illustration but it fits the style of the comics and we still get used to the more you read.
Loved this western comic that featured strong female characters. The artwork was gorgeous. I’m looking forward to getting to know the gals a little better in upcoming stories.
This graphic novel was AWESOME. The cast is a diverse group of women. They are strangers who work together to free an escaped slave girl trapped in a cage, and fight off the men who seek to get her back. These characters are badass, strong, and take no bullshit. Absolutely loved it!!
This was the first graphic novel I’ve gotten thanks to NetGalley. And I must say that it was really enjoyable. As a fan of historical settings the scenarios and characters were super interesting. I loved to see how the 5 women found each other agains adversity and social standards of the era. Each with a unique story and background. As they unite they must face adversity in a world of man by man. A world that wants to see them either surmises of death.
A novel I could easily recommend to any fans of women empowerment or the Wild West.
I must add a warning tho, if you can’t stand gore, don’t try it.
In Part 1 of this comic series, we meet five women from various backgrounds who will have to rely on one another for survival. A retired schoolteacher, an Indian who’s handy with a bow, a young, immigrant widow from London, a brothel worker who’s made off with the till and a fourteen-year-old slave who’s been put in a cage. Set on the frontier of America, woman are often at the mercy of men, but these women will flip the script. Working together, they’ll fight to the death to keep from letting these men have control over them.
It took me a minute to get into this one. It’s a little brutal, as the lives of women throughout history haven’t been easy or kind, but I really did love the characters, and the author didn’t shy away from race politics or lean into the “white savior” narrative. They tackled the issues head on (as much as one could in the context of the plot) and made the men into formidable villains. By the end, I was convinced to read the next one, whenever it comes along.
While I did like the art style this one wasn’t for me! There’s no specific reason just not my vibe but I feel like other people would enjoy this !
3.5 stars
Five women from vastly different backgrounds cross paths on the dangerous American frontier and are forced to band together against both the deadly terrain and the even deadlier men who seek to destroy them. Together they must brave the uncertainties that lie ahead and face the threats before them with only their grit and a few guns.
A solid introduction to what seems to be an action-packed comic set in the Wild West. It's a full cast of characters with plenty of steel and the potential is there for it to be a very interesting storyline. Vicious, candid and a compelling setup to a greater plot, I look forward to reading the rest of this narrative.
Five women are brought together by circumstances and defend themselves from attack. They are a child slave girl in a cage, a young widow pioneer from London, an Indian who is good with a bow, a retired schoolteacher, and a brothel worker who ran away with the till. They all come together to try to break open the cage, but when the slave girl's owner sends someone after her all hell breaks loose!
The art style in this book was beautiful!! the last few pages especially were so vibrant and action-packed. I really liked the main characters and felt that most of the girls had a great personality.
I do feel that the actual story is not explained very in-depth, and I wonder if in the second installment we will get more of an explanation.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Ladies with Guns by Olivier Bocquet & Anlor is an action-packed graphic novel that features gun-toting female protagonists. The story revolves around a band of women who use whatever weapons they have handy to defend themselves against violent men. According to the description, the crew includes "a retired schoolteacher, an Indian who’s handy with a bow, a young, immigrant widow from London, a brothel worker who’s made off with the till and a fourteen-year-old slave who’s been put in a cage."
Overall, Ladies with Guns has an intriguing premise, which made me really curious to read this book. However, I found the execution lacking. First of all, I'm a bit tired of seeing Native Americans being depicted in graphic novels as warriors / savages and doing nothing but fighting. It would have been great to see a more nuanced depiction here, but I didn't find that. Next, although I should have tipped off by the title, I was expecting something with a bit more substance and less mindless violence. If you're intrigued by the description, you can check out this book, which is available now.
For a comic titled “Ladies with Guns” they didn’t have guns when they needed it the most haha!
This was so fun!! I loved the diverse cast of badass ladies and the instant bond and trust they had for each other. Ladies with Gun is a quick comic set during a wild west / pioneer backdrop and it follows a group of girls, a white girl, an Indian and a black girl in a cage trying to survive and run away from the men who are looking for them. Along the way they get into a heck lot of trouble.
Loved the concept of this, super easy to get into and was a quick read. The illustrations were lovely and I didn’t mind the amount of blood and other gore-ish images (I mean it was expected with a title like that). Will be on the lookout for part 2 of this series!!
I received this book from Netgalley/Europe Comics in exchange of an honest review.
Haha, I was actually planning on posting a Release Day Blitz on this timeslot, but apparently, without my knowledge, they changed the date. So I thought I would do a review and since I had several Netgalley books still shouting at me to read them… I decided I would read one of them and, instead of posting in May (as with all the others), it would be here early! And Ladies With Guns won the contest of book to be read~
Can I just applaud that this woman is in a cage but just kicks and rolls around to move herself to another position? Bites a wolf when he bites her? Grrrrs at the gang of wolves when they attack? Hello, this girl, FIGHT! I was saddened when we learned she was put in the cage because of her skin colour/she is a slave. 🙁 We are indeed in that sucky time period. 😐
I loved how our gang of ladies slowly gets together, Kathleen a woman who lost her husband (which was heart-breaking though also very abrupt), Chumani a native girl who is out for revenge because Kathleen’s people killed her brother (there is a story to that and I was happy that Chumani also realised things), and then there is the girl in the cage, Abigail. She has been through a lot (and not just in that cage.. but also before that, holy fuck x infinity). These three are the beginning of the group, and these three become fast friends very soon and I just loved it! Plus, I was eagerly looking forward to meeting the two other woman and see what is up next for this band of woman.
And around 40 pages in we meet woman #4, Daisy McCormick who is done with everyone and tired of everyone’s shit. I just loved how she helped Kathleen. I already liked her before she helped Kathleen, she had that sass and I love a woman who, in these times, isn’t afraid to say something. XD And quite soon after we meet Daisy we meet someone named Cassie Coltrane, a prostitute. I had a laugh how she showed up and how she was like: “Oh but my nails.” XD Girl, please. I loved this group of women. Each of them was just so great and kick-ass.
But of course, things always go worse in settings like this, hello Wild West/America of the pioneers and such, someone is looking for Abigail and is very interested in having her back. I knew that the women would have to work hard to overcome this and I was eager to see what they were planning, though also very worried for their safety. Would each of these women make it out? It was not the easiest pages to read, especially not with the gore that the author/illustrator doesn’t like to shy away from. Excuse me, but I don’t need to see how someone’s jaw is just whacked away. XD
The ending… it came to soon, but it does set an interesting premise for the next book!
I also enjoyed the art, it was very well done! Maybe could do with a bit less gore though. 😛
Also, I just checked out Bocquet Olivier and he is also the writer of the amazing FRNK series! Eep!
All in all, if you like the Wild West/pioneer era + love kick-ass girls trying to get through life, then be sure to check out this graphic novel.
Each character introduction was more thrilling than the last and complemented each other perfectly.
"Ladies do not start fights, but we finish them." has never rung more true.
I very much look forward to the future of this series.
