I loved reading The Summer Trip. What a perfect holiday read, absolutely perfect book to read during the heatwave. I could almost picture Corfu and took great delight reading this novel and travelling to this part of Greece via this book.
I loved learning about the various characters, loved the plot, the character development and the location for the novel.
It was heartwarming, a delight to read, and one of my all time favourite holiday reads. I cannot recommend this book enough and if I could give it 6 stars I would. In this case I don’t think five stars is enough!
This was a huge swoon fest with a hard hitting solid story backing it up. I adore Isabelle Broom books and this one has rocketed to be one of my favourites
I always know that a book by Broom is going to put me in the perfect holiday spirit and this one definitely did. This time, Broom sets her story on the beautiful island of Corfu and as always, Broom transports us there and we get to explore the stunning scenery and lifestyle with the characters. The plot is incredibly endearing and gripping and I enjoyed seeing how events played out. This book really has family at the heart of it and what a unique, loud family it is. All the characters are full of life and they all bring something to this wonderful plot. They all go on a journey during this book and I guarantee you will fall in love with them like I did.
'The Summer Trip' is the perfect Summer read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advance copy.
Like all of Isabelle's previous books, I was soon swept up and transported to a beautifully-described location. This time we were off to gorgeous Kalami on the Greek island of Corfu. I was excited to read a story set in this location as this is somewhere I have visited myself. The descriptions of the village, beach and general vibe were all spot on, as well as other nearby locations, and this I enjoyed immensely, nodding along in approval at the beautifully-worded descriptions, which I knew from first-hand experience, were spot on.
This is the story of Ava (lovely name - I was later surprised to learn that it was, in fact, short for Avalanche!!) and her teenage daughter, Rosie, as they travel to Corfu to stay with one of Ava's sister and her gorgeous Greek husband, Nico. Right from the start you could tell that there was more to this story than first met the eye ...
This little gang are soon joined by Ava's other sister, her new boyfriend and their parents, who, together with Nico's Greek family, make up an interesting melting pot of different personalities.
I don't want to give too much away as spoilers, you will just have to read this yourself, but it is certainly a gripping, interesting story, which tugs at the heartstrings.
There is a satisfying ending and now I am desperate to re-visit Kalami!
Can't wait for Isabelle's next book!
I’d like to thank Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Summer Trip’ by Isabelle Broom in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Eighteen years ago Ava falls in love with a young Greek man in Corfu and her heart is broken when they separate and Ava has to return home to the UK. She soon meets Paul on the rebound and they have a daughter Rosie and although their marriage doesn’t last Ava will always be grateful to Paul for giving her their daughter. Rosie is now approaching her 18th birthday and Ava’s parents Martha and Angus arrange for them to fly out to Corfu where they’ll stay with Ava’s younger sister Mattie and her husband Nico, but she has never told anyone that it’s Nico she was in love with all those years ago and is her first and only true love. As Ava’s parents and youngest sister Lia arrive unexpectedly in Corfu, she finds it hard to keep her feelings for Nico hidden but can she do so without her family, and especially Mattie, finding out and putting their marriage at risk?
Isabelle Broom’s novels are so much better for getting the flavour of a country than reading a guide book and ‘The Summer Trip’ is no exception. This is a wonderful family drama based in sun-drenched Corfu where the three sisters’ secrets emerge, some of them long-buried, that could cause a split in the family. Set against a backdrop of sun, sand, blue skies and olive groves, this novel has been beautifully written with endearing characters and is an engrossing story of love, romance and self-discovery, and is complete and utter escapism! As I’ve neared the end of the story my heart has been with the sisters, and my smile has widened as I’ve been left with the feel-good factor that comes from reading a thoroughly enjoyed novel.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
After 18 years, Ava is back in Corfu, but she’s not forgotten ever what happened that Summer and the person who was left behind, and the fact that her sister is now living how she wanted to.
Her mother, unbeknown to them has orchestrated to bring her sisters together, and this brings about secrets that were kept years ago, those that were distanced meeting again, but this brings heavy repercussions for everyone that the secrets include.
I was cheering for Ava, but I also thinking about her relationship with her sister Mattie and Olivia and what the outcome would be if she opened up about her feelings for Niko.
The story had much more than I was predicting, there was desire and drama. It was difficult to put the book down, wanting to know what happens next.
I loved Ava, and Niko. I didn’t like Sam from the start.
The ending made me smile.
What a beautiful premise. Isabelle is one of my favorite authors and always incorporate travel and beautiful rich characters
What if your life worked out perfectly . . . for someone else?
It's been 18 years since Ava spent the summer on the Greek island of Corfu, but she has never forgotten what happened during those months - or who she left behind.
Now single, estranged from her family, and preparing to wave her daughter off to university, Ava's life seems a million miles away from the one she dreamed about as a teenager - a life now being lived by her sister instead.
When Ava decides to return to Corfu for the summer, she knows she must finally face the place and the people that broke her heart. But with old resentments festering, long-buried secrets lurking, and familiar feelings resurfacing, it looks set to be a holiday that will change all their lives forever. . .
Ava loved her holiday in Corfu when she was a young 18 yr old as it's where she met her first love. Now 18 yrs later with a daughter of her own and her sister living in Corfu she is returning.
Estranged from her sister she is tricked into going to Corfu for the summer. She thinks her sister and her husband won't be there so she will be able to avoid meeting them. Anther sister has been travelling and now living abroad, they have not seen each other for years either.
Wow! This book was filled with "what next will happen" moments. I could feel the awkwardness between them all in Corfu. Everyone was trying to make the best of it all and not really getting to the heart of the matter.
This is a family story with the glorious backdrop of Corfu. A family where secrets have been kept and made life so different for everyone. Can anything be fixed after all those years ?
I love Isabel Brooms books they always take place in wonderful settings.
Another truly magical read by Isabelle Broom. The story follows Ava, who is tricked by her mother into travelling to Corfu and visit her estranged sister, who happens to be married to Ava’s first love whom she met in Greece 18 years ago.
This book is beautiful - there’s romance, a bit of greek sunshine, a huge helping of family drama and some great characters… some you will like more than others. It’s a fabulous summer read that I will be recommending to everyone.
Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder and Stoughton and the author for the ARC.
Another really wonderful book by Isabelle broom. This book is full of twist and turns, plenty of drama, lots of intregue, family issues and drama and is also heartbreaking and uplifting. Wonderful.
Ava returns to Greece to be confronted by her first love but he is married to her sister. Her daughter Rosie also experiences the first flush of live but is it endangering her. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book.
Having enjoyed this author’s previous books, I was looking forward to this one and it didn’t disappoint.
When Ava was a teenager, she fell hopelessly in love with Nico one summer on the island of Corfu. Now 18 years later, she’s back and about to come face to face with the boy who broke her heart. Nico is now married to her younger sister Mattie, who has no idea of their brief relationship. But Ava knows she is still in love with Nico, can she keep the feelings she has for him to herself or will she risk turning their lives upside down?
A great family drama with a good mix of characters, it was an excellent read.
Ava in Corfu 18 years later... what happened all those years ago?
Wow this truly was a magical read I devoured this beauty in less than 24 hours.
This really made me want to be laying by a pool with the sun warming my face with these beautiful settings.
If you need a wonderful escapism then this is for you!
Isabelle Broom is one of my go to Authors and always delivers that perfect summer read.
A pleasure to read and review thank you for giving me the opportunity.
Another great story from Isabelle Broom. This is a book to be devoured settled around a pool in the blazing sunshine. I loved the family saga and the beautiful setting of Corfu. Full of relationships, fun, food and romance.
A real page turner. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review. It was an absolute pleasure.
A really lovely book from Isabelle Broom which I really enjoyed. I was completely invested in this story, loved the settings, the characters and the way the plot unfolded. A perfect beach read which you will wish you are reading in Greece..
An intense story of 3 sisters finally becoming a family again. Set mainly in Corfu The food descriptions were lovely.. Two of the characters were not nice but one you were right about and the other grew on you. The family restaurant where Niko worked and ran sounded lovely. Family ties are strong at times. The description of Corfu were lovely. Amazing what we do for our children and how hurtful they can be. Fab read .
"The Summer Trip" is another great family drama and romance from Isabelle Broom. This time we are taken to Corfu, where the Fox family had enjoyed a memorable summer holiday some 19 years previously, and where one of the 3 daughters now lives. The story of this earlier trip gradually unfolds in snippets of memories from narrator and oldest daughter Ava. Having been rather estranged due to geography and circumstances, the family gradually establish a new rapport as they get to know each other again.
The location, as with other books by Isabelle Broom, also has a starring role. The family is staying in Kalami where the snow white villa of "My Family and Other Animals" fame is now a fancy restaurant.
A great holiday read. Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
Ava Fox lives with her teenage daughter Rosie by the sea in Briton. She is a single parent but her ex Paul and she still get on well and Paul is a good father. She is the firstborn child and her two sisters have flown their wings abroad, her middle sister Matilda (Mattie) to the Greek island of Corfu where she lives with her husband Niko and the youngest sister Ophelia (Lia) to Phuket in Thailand by default. She had been going to Australia but stopped off and stayed there. They have sort of lost each other and the family is fractured. Ava virtually brought up her sisters alone and once they were so close, but not anymore. Everything has changed.
One sunny day Ava answers a phone call from her mother. She and her mother have never really got on and are hardly ever in contact. Her mother tells her that Mattie and Niko would like to come to Mattie’s homeland for a holiday. Her mother had suggested that they swap homes so that Ava and Rosie can have a holiday in Corfu, just like Ava had when she was Rosie’s age. Rosie is beyond excited and definitely delighted by the holiday arrangements. Her mother and father were going to Thailand to catch up with their youngest and most favoured daughter Lia.
Ava had loved Corfu and once, eighteen years ago she had wanted to stay and make her home in Kalami. She knew she was getting the better deal of the house swap – Mattie and Niko lived in a beautiful, large villa half way up a hill where they could see the horseshoe shaped stunningly beautiful beach. What’s more there was a pool in the large garden. When they arrived Ava started looking for the door key under the terracotta flower pot to open up the door, while Rosie was charmed by the utter beauty she saw everywhere she looked. The door swung open and there was Nico, ready to see off intruders and with a spade held aloft, and soon Mattie was there beside him. It soon became obvious what had happened. Her interfering mother had made it all up just to get them back together and seal the rift. Ava was embarrassed and angry with her mum. She immediately felt they were imposing on Mattie and Niko, so she promised that she and Rosie would organise a flight home a.s.a.p. Mattie begged them to stay. There is plenty of room for them and she would enjoy the company, so their summer holiday in paradise began. But what happens next? You’ll have to read it because you will never predict the dramatic finale.
Little do they know what happens next and how challenging their holiday will be. It will change their lives forever when deeply buried secrets are spilt and four other visitors arrive for a holiday at the villa and inadvertently double the trouble. I enjoyed reading this engaging and beautifully told story about a family in crisis. I am a huge fan of scenic and beautiful Corfu, a friendly and welcoming holiday resort in the Ionian Sea. I thought the pace of the story was just right, the storyboard engrossing and the characters well developed and relatable. I looked forward to finding out how the story would develop and finally end. It was a real page-turner. I was not disappointed at all, far from it. I thought the description of the landscape, beaches and resorts were beguiling and I hope lots of readers are persuaded to make a visit there. Once I had been there, my holiday each year was eagerly booked – it felt like a second home.
I would like to thank NetGalley and publisher Hodder & Stoughton for my copy of this novel, sent to me in return for an honest review. This novel is a good read, perfect escapism, upbeat and uplifting. It is about family, integrity, loyalty and love. I have no hesitation at all in awarding it a 4* recommendation.
A wonderful love story with twists and turns along the way. Ava puts her life on hold for her daughter , her heart lies in corfu with Nico given a long time ago but he eventually marries her sister. A good story that in the end love wins
This was such a good read that I would love to have read around a pool. It is well written with a compelling storyline that explores family dynamics and the relationships in those dynamics, and well developed characters. It was a gripping read in a stunning setting. I loved it.
