I got this as an advanced readers copy and I could not have been more excited! As a beach gal and Hawaii being literally my favorite place on Earth, I could not wait to read this one!
Reinking's debut novel follows Mia after a breakup looking for some space and a breath of fresh air. She decides to take a month-long trip to Hawaii (my actual DREAM) to clear her head and avoid her friends and family bringing up her heartbreak.
From the other perspective, we follow John, who is renting his Hawaiian cottage to Mia. The quiet and mysterious Army Vet doesn't normally interact with his guests, but there's something different about Mia.
I could talk about this book ALL day but I don't want to spoil anything! I absolutely loved every second of this. The characters were interesting and well written, the setting was so fun to daydream about and I read it in about three sittings over two days. I couldn't put it down! It was a quick, easy and super fun read that I just totally devoured.
The Ohana Cottage (The Hawaiian Getaway) gets the Beach Read marks for me as well as a solid five stars! It comes out June 2, 2022 and is marked as the first of a series! I can't wait for the next one!
The Ohana Cottage is a short, cute romance story about John and Mia. Takes place in Hawaii which is a great setting for the story. Mia left Minnesota after breaking up with her boyfriend and needed time away. She meets John who is renting his small cottage to her.
They are complete opposites and compliment each other, Mia is extroverted and John is an introvert, and she is what brings him out of his shell. He is an army veteran suffering from PTSD, and the author really emphasized how it can be challenging for people who suffer from this. The story was predictable at times, but overall it was an enjoyable read. I think the ending was a bit rushed, and a tad bit insta-love for my taste.
this is my honest review and thank you for the ARC!
This was a very sweet and easy read.
It's the story of Mia who travels to Hawaii from Minnesota following yet another break up with her on and off boyfriend. Here she meets John, whose little cottage at the back of his property she stays in. The story is told from a dual point of view.
I loved the Hawaii setting, Mia's friendliness and passion, John's quiet resolve.
John had his own issues to deal with and Mia entered his life at a time when he probably needed her quite a bit.
It was all cute and romantic, with a slight bit of drama towards the end - but not too much!
The only issue I had was that the Mia and John chapters didn't seem different enough for me - it didn't sound like their personalities came across enough from "their own point of view". I wish there was slightly more depth to them, especially John.
It was also quite predictable with no twists, but this was nice - just don't expect any susprises.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for this ARC.
This was a such a cute book. It is a closed-door romance, there is kissing an the notion that they go all the way but it is not explicitly explained. The characters were so cute. Mia is a girl just trying to go out there and do new things, saying yes to everything that comes here way. John is trying to get over trauma, which I did enjoy as an aspect of this book. When they finally come together, Mia is just trying to get him to open up and be happy go lucky like she is, but overall John is not that way and struggles with it. The book deals with anxiety and how it can play a roll in relationships until it is dealt with.
It was super cute. I wish there was a little more to the store as a whole, more about John and Mia and there overall lives. It is a super cute, book that made me so happy to read.
Thank you for the ARC!
This book was a short, sweet romance. I think if you’re on holidays or need a little escapism, this is a fun beach read.
Personally I didn’t vibe with the writing style that much. I can’t really put my finger on what was wrong but the dialogue felt awkward. I’m also not a big fan of the “Insta-love” trope which I think this fell under. The romance seemed to progress really quickly throughout the novel. This resulting in the need for a third-act conflict which is also do not care for when reading romance novels.
The characters were a little boring, like there was nothing bad about them but I didn’t really connect with Mia or John. However, they did have their cute moments in the book.
Overall, the novel was easy to read, I would recommend if in a fluffy, summer, romance mood. I just personally didn’t love the book that much.

The Ohana Cottage started off strong but then fell to the wayside towards the end. 3/4 of the book was building to the break up (not an unusual concept) but because so much time was spent there, the remaining 1/4 was rushed, which made it feel disjointed.
The cover is cute, and the synopsis hooks you. But the book itself didn't hit the mark.
As it was her debut novel, I believe that she still has the possibility of writing great books in the future, after a bit of experience.
2.5/5
I got to read this book via NetGalley. I was originally drawn to the book from its cute cover, and the book was exactly that cute.
I enjoyed the premise of the book but felt like there was something missing. The writing style was not to my taste and seemed quite choppy in places. The characters were quite loveable but their romance did feel rushed. I didn’t dislike the book just found it average overall.
I think if you enjoy a book which is fade to black and a predictable romance then it will likely be an enjoyable easy read.
This was a sweet, very fast read. I think it’s perfect if you’re looking for a light, beachy read. The story hides an emotional storyline with John’s past and PTSD, but I have to admit he wasn’t my favorite kind of hero. I do love grumpy heroes, but he was a bit too Alpha for my liking. He got mad at Mia for simple things like wanting to call her ex (who was her friend) and that annoyed me. I’m glad he ended up getting help, though. Mia was sweet and lovable, but I couldn’t fully connect with her since the book was a bit shallow.
I think this was a good debut, nonetheless!

Thanks for my eARC!
In my quest to explore lesser-read tropes, I decided to give this book a chance. It features grumpy / sunshine and forced proximity. It also touches on some important mental health topics, such as PTSD. However, I found the storyline to be quite choppy and hard to keep up with. This author tends to tell you rather than show you, and for that reason I struggled to connect with the two main characters. I’m also not a fan of insta-love, and unfortunately this couple felt too rushed for me. They didn’t feel real or organic, and were told how they feel without seeing why they feel the way that they do.
As a side point, I’m actually someone who has lived in Hawaii and I was thrilled to see a book that takes place on the island where I used to live. Unfortunately, we see very little of Hawaii outside of the stereotypical tiki bar and beach. Additionally, the author constantly references the state and not the island, when it should have been the other way around.
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Loved this book. A book needed to be written to say that it’s ok to break up with someone when it’s not a bad relationship, but that you just know you don’t want to marry them and have a forever. Even if your families do…
And the PTSD aspect from John , the homeowner, was a great reminder that so many of our military suffer and we need to be there supporting them not only when they are on duty , but forever after they return home.
Kudos.
A fantastic charming contemporary romance .
Mia has just split from her boyfriend so what better way to get away from it all go travelling!! So she ends up this little ohana cottage which can I say sounds perfect in Hawaii.. and John the brooding little stand offish army vertren who Mia rents it off . Poor John suffering with P.T.S.D .so I think Mia came along at the right time .
This is a story of opposite attracted Mia very happy go luck I think she brings the best out in John. Both characters I found captivating.
The story itself I found heartwarming.it is fantastically written . I thought the flash backs was very well executed as its very sensitive subject.
If your looking for a bit of romance or should I say growing romance this is the book for you .
"I love the way you make me feel, not because you make me feel less miserable, but because you make every part of me feel more alive."
The Ohana Cottage was a quick, easy read with a lot of heart. And who wouldn't want to take mental health break in Hawaii? I really loved Mia and the way she helped John begin to heal from his trauma. They really complimented each other well.
The Ohana Cottage is closed-door/fade-to-black romance, but the grumpy x sunshine / opposites attract vibes were perfect, and I didn't miss the spice.
I'm really looking forward to reading more from this author!
THANK YOU to the publishers and netgalley!! This was such a cute book set in HAWAII!! I liked Mia and John’s romance and this is the perfect Summer romance book!!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review 😊
I really liked the premise of the book and was excited to see a book set in Hawaii with the grumpy sunshine romance trope. I really liked the start of the book and how Mia wanted to discover more about herself in a new country after a break up. However I was a little disappointed that we only saw the beach and the bar and that we didn't get to see more of Hawaii and the culture.
There was a lack of build up in John and Mia's relationship and it felt very insta-love which made it hard to root for the characters to be together. That being said there was some cute moments and the physical attraction between the characters was definitely there. Some of the dialogue could have been cut down as certain parts were repeated multiple times, there was alot of telling not showing. The third act conflict was very abrupt and wish it had been done differently as it felt out of character.
I found John to be an intriguing character and how his time in the military impacted his relationships with his friends and family afterwards.
Overall if you are looking for a quick summer romance read, with cute moments and fade to black this book might be for you.
Trigger warnings: PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks
I'd like to thank NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and author Megan Reinking for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The ONLY reason I'm giving this one a 4 stars instead of 5, is because I didn't like the ''plot twist'' of the mom and bff showing up to her getaway. I found it took away from the story and the what could have been between the main characters.
Otherwise, absolutely loved this cute romance, I devoured in only 1 day and it's another one of those books that I wish I could go back and read for the first time because I enjoyed it so much.
Definitely recommend this book!
arc for honest review* this the cutest book such a fast easy read as well. i like how it’s written! this book is about how mia goes to hawaii after her break up for some time of her own to think. When she meets a guy named john and they hit off. find out more and read the ohana cottage!
**Trigger warning: PTSD**
This book is a very endearing one. We have several tropes in this book such as: opposites attract, fake dating, forced proxinity and grumpy sunshine. The characters are so different but the compliment each other so well.
This story is a dual POV, which I think works so beautifuly as an advantage in this book because you get to see the two sides of the story (and who doesn't like that).
Overall, I think this will be a perfect book to take with you to read on a vacation.
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a cute romance, but I couldn’t connect with the characters and the plot didn’t hook me in at the beginning which made it a struggle to stay interested and get through. I did however like the Hawaii setting which would make this a good beach read if you’re looking for something short and simple with sunny vibes.
I didn't even look at what this book was about before I knew I wanted to read it. All I had to do was read the title. I'm a big Disney fan and for me the title of the book really dragged me in. Ohana means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. A wonderful tag line from the amazing Lilo and Stitch. This book was light hearted, easy to read and funny, with fab characters and a feel good uplifting storyline.

The Ohana Cottage is a lovely romance story to get you in the mood for summer. Mia is coming off a 4 year break up and decides to reset her life with a 1month sabbatical in Honolulu. This is meets John. The hot veteran who is the opposite of everything Mia is, oh and he is her air b&b host!
Mia is an outgoing, bubbly, plastics ray of singing. John is an army vet going through PTSD, and isolating himself form the world. Mia bring Mia inserts herself in his life and is just what he needs.
While the story is great, and I love the plot it just seemed to be missing some key dialogue and moments between the two. Sometimes I found myself saying “oh wow they really like each other, when did this happen”, which is why I gave it 3 stars. For this being the authors debut novel, I think she did an amazing job, this was a super fun short summer read ☀️
