4 Stars!!!
This was such a cute book! Mia and Jon meet in Hawaii when Mia books his Air BNB for a relaxing self-care vacation after a breakup. Mia is girl that everyone strives to be: passionate, gets along with everyone, independent, etc! Jon; however, is struggling with PTSD after a military deployment.
Throughout the book, Mia helps melt Jon's closed off exterior and allowing him the space he needs to heal. The third act conflict in this book was so sad, but pretty predictable. The steam for this book was low, with all of the sexy scenes fading to black. Nothing but sexy glares and kisses if you are looking for more of a clean romance.
This was a fun contemporary clean romance and I would recommend it to lovers of this genre!
So Mia Taylor, fresh from a breakup, makes her way by herself to Hawaii to a cute cottage to recharge.
Her hunky landlord, John Byrd is an Army veteran who is dealing with PTSD from his time in the war.
he's trying to stay away from people and his new tenant and she can't help herself.
it's the perfect grumpy/sunshine troupe.
It's an easy read, but I really wanted MORE. The storyline felt rushed and I would have liked a little more time to see the relationship develop.
However, this is the perfect poolside/beach read this summer!
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced e copy. All opinions are my own.
When Mia Taylor finds herself fresh off of a breakup and in desperate need of a getaway, she escapes the harsh Minnesota winter and embarks on a solo trip to Hawaii. There, she rents an Ohana Cottage, the perfect little place to call home for the next month while she recharges and gains clarity on the next steps of her life.
John Byrd is an Army veteran, dealing with his fair share of trauma from his time in the war. He’s hell bent on keeping to himself and shutting everyone out. That is, until his new tenant, Mia Taylor, shows up to rent his cottage.
She’s outgoing, adventurous and chatty.
He’s broody, quiet and standoffish.
Can he successfully manage to avoid her too? Or could she be the one person to finally break down his walls?
This book was wonderfully intriguing; but it was the emotion in the story and the quality of the writing that sang out to me.
Firstly I’d like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for the e-arc 🥰🥰
The Ohana Cottage tells the story of Mia a newspaper editor who, after a break up, goes on an extended break to the beautiful island of Hawaii. Whilst she’s there, she meets the rather stoic, quiet and very handsome John who she starts to spend a lot of time with…
This book has a wonderful message, telling Johns story of being in the military and touring Iraq. It’s definitely is emotional for him, but with Mia’s help his mood lifts slightly, his though his trauma and his PTSD is there, his mood starts to shift with the help of Mia’s warmth and love ❤️❤️ She’s light, bright and talks to everyone and it starts breaks him out of his funk. The chemistry between Mia and John is obvious from the start and, though the storyline is quite predictable, it’s a really lovely read. I would’ve liked some spice though!!
It’s a super easy read, I read The Ohana Cottage in one afternoon. If you’d like a nice and dependable to read then this book is for you!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Trigger warning - I do want to reiterate that there is military trauma in this book ❤️❤️
I absolutely adored this debut from Megan Reinking ~ it is a cute and quick beach read, perfect for when you need an escape from reality!
Loves:
🌴 dual POV ~ I loved the insight into John’s world and how he coped (or didn’t) with the world around him.
🌴 mental health awareness (PTSD)
🌴 sunshine x grumpy
🌴 the descriptions of Hawaii and Mia’s day-to-day life on the island, I felt like I was there!
🌴 cute and loveable extra characters ~ Hazel, Paige, Julie
Dislikes:
🌅 I wanted more! At times it felt a little bit rushed so I wish it could’ve been a bit longer so we could really see Mia and John’s relationship blossom!
I would highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a cure and fun read for the summer or on a rainy day to cheer you up!
Personally I can’t wait to see what Megan Reinking writes next.
Thank you to NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a short and cute summer read, that makes you want to pack your bags and move to Hawaii.
It was super easy to get into the story, however, the main character was a little tedious, the long descriptions were unnecessary and it made it difficult to connect with her.
John was easier to love. In contrast to Mia, who is outgoing and talkative, John is closed off and reserved.
The author did a fantastic job establishing the atmosphere, I couldn't help but to root for them to get together and find happiness. The romance didn't feel forced, and I enjoyed how Mia stood by John and helped him make the right choices for himself - even if he wasn't fully aware of them.
At the end of the book, however, I couldn't help but feel a little unsatisfied. I wanted more, maybe the book needed to be a bit longer so we could gain a deeper understanding of the plot and characters.
Having said that, it is a nice read that also deals with some important issues, such as PTSD in war veterans.
This book had such a great premise and I really wanted to love it but I didn't. I loved the uniqueness of John and Mia's relationship and I'm a sucker for the grumpy x sunshine trope, and I'm sure I would've loved the story if the writing was more focused on showing rather than telling. The author does a lot of telling, which I'm sure some people might have enjoyed, but it's not really my thing. I think this story would've done great as a movie (it's short, fast-paced, light-hearted...) but as a book, there's a lot that was missing.
thank you netgalley, the publisher and the author for providing an advanced copy.
I have to admit, i’m a sucker for the cover. It’s absolutely stunning, especially the colors and 100% as a whole.
But there’s a thing, i’m not a sucker for… this book.
I’m surprised how high i’m rating it bc i was bored the whole time but i adored the characters. I thought that both of them were lovely and it made sense. They made sense.
There is definitely a lack in the plot. It’s just not interesting or thrilling. I preferred the first half over the last part but that’s definitely different for everyone. One thing that also didn’t made sense, was how fast they loved/ liked each other. Idk… they barely knew each other and were already madly in love??? Not with me.
I liked the trauma representation.
Overall, it’s a cute & fast read. You won’t be disappointed if you love romance books. :)
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC for an exchange for an honest review.
Loved it, so interesting to read.
I’ve rated this book 3.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Ohana Cottage is a story about Mia, who is handling the end of a long term relationship by taking a long vacation in Hawaii. She’s renting a cottage from John, a veteran suffering from PTSD who is instantly taken by Mia.
This is a quick beach read-style fade-to-black romance, easy to finish in one sitting. I wished the characters weren’t all so perfectly imperfect, it would’ve made them more interesting. The pacing was off for me—the reader would spend whole chapters focused on one ten-minute interaction, and then the next chapter would catch you up on 4 hours of missed time so you’d be right back in the same place with lots of missed action.
I wished for a little less touristic element to the story and much more interaction with Natives, given the setting. While Mia was respectful of the environment, she was a white character surrounded only by other white characters (all successful business- and home-owners).
It seems as though the next book this series could focus on Paige, and I’d come back around to see where her story goes!

The Ohana Cottage provides a swift, sweet read about two wounded souls. Mia is escaping a break up and needs a complete change of scenery. She leaves frigid Minnesota for tropical Hawaii. She encounters John, a veteran who has trauma issues. They strike up a friendship which quickly turns into something more. They’re young and have the world at their feet, but the romance seemed rushed and a bit too contrived.
The ending is satisfying, but the question of how they earn their living wasn’t really addressed. I know it’s fiction, but details like that gnaw at my need for all the loose ends to be tied up.
This sounded like such a great atmospheric read, however I wasn’t really drawn into the story, The plot could have taken place anywhere and I do feel the ending was pretty rushed. I wish the characters had more chemistry with each other and a deeper understanding/connection towards each other.
It was an easy and heartwarming read overall though. :)
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this copy!
This was a really easy, cute read for me. I'd say it's perfect for a quick summer read because of the Hawaii setting.
I don't want to really give anything away but after another breakup with her on-off again boyfriend, our main girl Mia decides to leave the harsh winters of Minnesota and rents an Airbnb for a month in Hawaii. There she meets John, an army veteran, who is reserved and dealing with his own internal issues.
I liked Mia and John's relationship progress. Especially because it was dual POV so you got to get inside of his head. I really don't have much that I disliked about this, except that I wish we got to a little bit more of her adventures in Hawaii. Instead it felt like of a lot of dining in and eating papaya, picnics on the beach, going to the same bar that John's childhood friend worked at. Like that's cool and all .. but it got a little bit repetitive and just felt like filler.
I'm also hoping this becomes a little series because I'd love to read more about Matt!!
Thank you Netgalley and Victory Editing for this ARC!
This was such a cute, fun read.
The Ohana Cottage has such a lovely romance plot, with Mia Tyler heading off to Hawaii after a recent breakup to find air b'n'b owner John Byrd catches her eye.
I loved the 'fake dating' and 'sunshine x grumpy' tropes, however, I do wish we got to experience and understand the character some more.
Thank you Netgalley and author for the arc in exchange for a review!
All opinions are my own!
p.s. trigger warning for post-military PTSD.
This book is well written and it was a cute fun read. Some of the tropes:
•Fake dating
•I hate everyone but you
•You make everything better
•Sunshine x Grumpy
Mia Taylor broke up with her boyfriend and goes on a soul searching "working vacation" to Hawaii to find herself again. She rents an Air BnB called Ohana Cottage. When her eyes catches the owner, John Byrd, he is an army vetran dealing with severe PTSD from his time in Iraq. He is very closed off and shuts everyone out, until Mia starts breaking down his walls. Mia's mom and best friend come to visit after she tells a little white lie about dating John... after the cherade the chemistry between them was undeniable 🥰
Its a cute RomCom that deals with very real trauma check TW before reading
“I’m not crazy like my friends and family said. It’s totally normal to fly nine hours by yourself to escape an ex and spend an extended amount of time on a reset, right? Yup, totally normal.”
This book was adorable🥹 I absolutely fell in love with the plot and both MC’s. I felt an escape while reading this story, it wasn’t too heavy except for a few mental health topics. Catch me planning a trip to Hawaii to pretend I’m a local instead of living the tourist life ✌🏻🏄🏻♀️
Read if you like:
🏄🏻♀️Dual POV
🏄🏻♀️Grumpy/Sunshine Trope
🏄🏻♀️Forced Proximity
My only complaints:
I wish this book was longer so that the plot wasn’t as rushed and I could learn more about the details/scenery of Hawaii and the relationships between the characters such as a little back history on the boys John grew up with, his childhood and relationship with his sister, and who he really was before he left for the army. Also, maybe I’m a book whore but fade-to-black is just rude and that’s my hot take on the 🌶 level for this one!
Thank you Netgalley and author for the arc in exchange for a review!
(trigger warning)
-serious emotional & mental health issues involving post military ptsd.
I had the opportunity to read this book thanks to NetGalley.
I was drawn to this book by the cover and description. I mean...Hawaii, somewhat forced proximity, hint of grumpy sunshine? Everything I could want in a book!
Unfortunately, this just wasn’t the book for me. I was really hoping to love it and I don’t mind predictable stories at all, but this book felt rushed and just didn't hook me. The dialogue, pace, and some of the plot was lacking for me. I think there was a lot of potential and many people may like it, but it just didn’t live up to what I was expecting. At the end of the day, it is a quick read with some cute moments.
This book is a good example of multiple POV’s. Mia rents a cottage in Hawaii from John and sparks fly. But will John’s ptsd and Mia’s ex get in the way?
I read this book in anticipation of a Hawaii trip and I wish that the Hawaiian culture and atmosphere was a little richer in this story. But overall I enjoyed it!
Thank you NetGalley and Megan Reinking for this E-ARC in exchange for a honest review!
I absolutely loved this book! Mia and John are so cute! This book has one of my favorite tropes which is fake-dating.
Mia recently broke up with her boyfriend of 4 years, and decides to fly to Hawaii to try and find clarity in her life. Mia ends up booking an AirBnb for 1 month in Hawaii. Little does she know that she would end up falling for the owner of the Airbnb!
TW: PTSD
This was definitely a cute sunny read and most needed during this cold and rainy weather we’ve been having lately. It made me feel all warm and cheerful!
📖 — Having just recently broken up, Mia Taylor decides it’s the perfect time to go on a solo trip to Hawaii and escape the harsh winter weather (as a Canadian I do relate a lot to that part 😂). She rents the Ohana Cottage from John, an army veteran who’s the exact opposite from her. Reserved, isolated and almost always silent while Mia is easygoing, all about making friend with everyone and chatting all the time. A clashing mix for sure, but maybe it’s exactly what they need. —
The two characters had a great dynamic together and it was great to follow them around. They were honestly so easy to like. How their relationship started is definitely one of my favourite parts!
The dual POV was really perfect for this book, especially since John is a lot inside his head so it was great to understand what was going on. I loved his character a lot and even though I cannot relate to what he’s going through I feel like somehow I understand parts of his thoughts and how it can be hard to ask for help and try to get better when it makes you feel like a burden to everyone around you. I was really happy to see his evolution in all of that. 💗
Little warning though, you might find yourself craving papaya after reading this book!
