I was offered this book as an ARC via NetGalley and was intrigued as to how digital collage could be incorporated into a book. The information and background context to the images was interesting but, for me, the the digital collages fell a little flat with the exception of 'Bobo'. I really liked the depth that Alice Shapiro has created in this image and am not surprised that it took her over 49 hours to complete. The Mary LaForge website provides a good idea of what to expect from this book so it is worth taking a look there to decide if you like what you see.
Listed as a poetry book but is actually a very short art portfolio. I enjoy collages and art but there was not much in this book that sparked thought or inspiration in me. LaForge speaks in her intro about how this art is about lack of culture and heritage in third generation Americans but then adds no additional talking points throughout the book other than very small anecdotes about her travels. In the end, it lacks emotion and substance that a reader needs to connect with deeply personal art.
The collages were interesting and I liked the French section personally.
