This was an enjoyable, easy read... also my first Jeffrey Archer experience. Despite this, I don't feel like I was missing crucial information as the narrator did an excellent job of updating the reader and reminding them of past events.
The good guys were clearly good and the bad guys were very bad. Miles Faulkner, I see as a more nuanced villain, though and in the end, I found myself rooting for him. Christina was similar to Miles and despite some redeeming qualities shown at the end, I could not find it in me to trust her. At least with Miles, I knew he was bad.
I love the relationships between characters (father and son, between colleagues, and my absolute favourite being William and Beth) and I feel that throughout the series, there was quite a bit of character development... more than expected for the genre.
The slight negative while reading the eBook was the sudden point of view change, mid-chapter, with no clear delimitation. It didn't impact my enjoyment, but it did affect the flow.
A great book touching on very important current issues: love, honesty, faithfulness, parenting, gender equality, greed, corruption, racism, extremism and many more. I will have to read the entire series.

If you're after a read by the pool this summer, Jeffery Archer is perfect. I've read a few Jeffrey Archer books in the past and have to admit I quite like the storylines. They're excellent escapism fiction. The worlds are always better than we face in real life, which is perfect for escaping today's problems. This is the first William Warwick novel I've read, and I have to say it is easy to read as a standalone.

The book is set in the 1980's and features the Princess of Wales, Diana. There's a problem with the royal bodyguard team, and Warwick is sent in the Hawk to find out the extent. He finds wide spread corruption in every section of the detail. One of his trusted officers is assigned to protect Diana. The book follows both this story and stories left over from previous books, but is still highly readable as a standalone.

I have to admit that Jeffery Archer isn't my first choice of author. Yet they're still perfect escapism novels. The stories are always interesting, and Next in Line is no different. The story is very easy to read, the storyline, whilst a bit whimsical at times, is enjoyable. I'd recommend highly this to anyone who reads Jeffrey Archer or who wants a comfortable read for a summer's afternoon.

What a master storyteller Jeffrey Archer is as he weaves twists and turns and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. There is more interaction between William Warwick and Miles Faulkner as well as Miles Solicitor Booth Watson. This is a really good book, which kept me reading late into the night. I’m not going to spoil it by giving any plots away but I would definitely recommend the book
Next in Line is the latest book in the Warwick series, which I have really enjoyed. I've read all so far and this one didn't disappoint. It followed the characters from the previous novels, but also introduced new ones and – without spoiling too much – involved a very exciting incident on a yacht involving Princess Diana. I enjoy Jeffrey Archer's writing style, particularly the clever and unexpected twists and turns. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an intriguing fast-paced read.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a free advance copy of Next in Line in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed Next in Line by Jeffrey Archer, the fifth instalment of the William Warwick series and the ongoing cat and mouse game between William Warwick and Miles Faulkner.
I loved the multiple threads of the story and the way story moved between them all in each chapter, making the book very pacy. When I started reading the book, I ended up reading to 3am because I just had to know what happened next!
Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publishers HarperCollins for making this book available to me for a fair and honest review.
Thank you to the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book. I am definitely a fan of Jeffrey Archer, I faithfully pre-ordered all of the Clifton series and Kane and Abel is an all time favourite but I just can't warm to this series at all. I know the Warwick series was part of Clifton but I do actually get the feeling it is not classic Jeffrey Archer, I cant empathise with William Warwick and even less with his very clever wife. It felt very formulaic and whilst classic Archer demands you to somewhat suspend belief and just enjoy the story, I found the Royal Family story line just a touch too far fetched. I really wanted to love this book as much as most of his others but I just can't get into this series which is why I only gave it 3 stars.
It is 1988, London. Princess Diana is the love of the nation, the people's princess. Scotland Yard’s Royalty Protection Command is the team entrusted with keeping the Royal family safe. They are the best of the best, and need to be operating to the best of their ability.
However there are some suspicions that one of the operating teams is not performing as they should. Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick is sent in to investigate. This job requires complete dedication to your role, otherwise the protection of the Royal family is at state. So his team throw themselves into the investigation in multiple ways to get to the bottom of it.
Meanwhile, a ruthless criminal that Warwick put in jail, Miles Faulkner, is pulling strings, both inside jail and outside to try and get what he wants. Unknown to him, his previously trusted legal counsel is working against him. How does this all connect? The pressure is on to figure it all out, fast.
This is Book 5 in the William Warwick collection, a new to me series. As a result I found that I was a little lost when it came to some back story and characters. The two storylines worked well, with good twists and entwined well, keeping you entertained and turning the pages. It felt very well researched, although I presume some dramatic licence on the behalf of the princess in some parts! I think the book worked ok as a stand alone, but would have been better with the context of the previous 4 books. Overall however, an enjoyable read, fast paced, and full of clever moments that will make you wish you were half as cool as Warwick and his team!
*I received this copy from NetGalley for review, but all opinions are my own.
Fantastic as always, lots of twists and turns along the way! Mulriple plots well woven, Thoroughly enjoyed!
I had not realised that this is book 5 in a series by Jeffrey Archer. This meant that I struggled to figure out who was who. It interrupted the flow of the narrative for me.
I used to love Archer’s books, but I’m lukewarm about this one. It calls for a huge suspension of disbelief , and is a step too far for me,
I also dislike the ploy of including Princess Diana in the narrative, and ascribing to her actions which she would not necessarily have taken. Hasn’t the woman been exploited enough since her death? A fictional princess would have worked just as well.
Well written, as one would expect, but not enjoyable for me.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this book.
Jeffrey Archer does it again. Cleverly intertwined storylines and interesting characters combined.
William Warwick’s fifth outing and he’s back pitted against his old adversary Miles Faulkner. At the same time there’s trouble brewing in the Royal Protection Unit and Warwick is tasked with finding out just what exactly is going on.
Great storytelling as usual from Archer! Thanks to the author, HarperCollins and NetGalley for the advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own.
This is a fantastic series and this is the best book so far. Long may William Warwick and his colleagues continue to amuse and confound us. The antics of the Faulkners are so well plotted that the reader is always one step behind. The lighthearted tone however, shouldn’t take away from the fact that these are very well written alongside a deep knowledge of art. Stunning storytelling by a master of the game.
Starting this book, I wasn't too sure how it was going to go as it seemed to be 2 stories but once I got into it I was absolutely hooked as they joined together. Great reading and gripping to the very end!
This is such a treat for me!!!! Jeffrey archer is one of my husband's favourite author of all times and he is very picky!!! Since his writing is "retro" style, I never thought I would enjoy it as it's not my theme usually but I have been missing out!!!! This is simply brilliant and I cannot wait to recommend this book to a friend of mine who used to work for the Royal protection himself. The research is clearly thorough and the links to our beloved Diana poignant. This book is pure pleasure, as good as it gets and I will be purchasing the whole Warwick series promptly. This is the kind of books you read and wish to be struck with instant amnesia in order to enjoy them all over again!!!! Brilliant!!!!
Oh wow. This is really very good. The Warwick detective series is excellent and this latest book is certainly the best of the lot. It’s a cliché to say that Archer is a brilliant story teller, but to be fair, he keeps the reader turning pages and leaving you eager to know what happens next.
The links with Princess Diana are careful and calculated. No-one could take offence at this real life icon appearing in the book (well, apart from a few close family members) as her story within this story links everything together.
Just as the reader thinks they know where this novel is going, it takes a great big turn and after you settle with this it twists again until the big finish.
I now think I know a lot about the royal protection team, but that may be a combination of Archer’s research and what he wants me to believe. It feels so real that I wouldn’t know any different.
A free copy of this book came to me, but I’ll always buy more in this series.
Finding out more about Warwick’s family and seeing how his wife is connected to the criminal arrested in the previous book, leaves many avenues to follow and Archer follows them all.
One matter worried me throughout this book; I do not like Booth Watson and hope he settles to a life behind bars very soon. All of the other characters are very interesting, including the criminal Miles, who takes time in, out and in and out of prison again.
I put off starting this book because I KNEW I wouldn’t be able to put it down and I knew before I even started that I wouldn’t want it to end! I was not wrong- it was incredible, I read it all in a day and now I’m sad that it’s finished!!
An exemplary novel from Archer- featuring the now incredibly familiar characters of William Warwick, his family, his colleagues, his friends and his foes. I throughly enjoyed the Diana story line- so terrifyingly realistic and plausible, and I thought the Miles Faulkner and Booth Watson storyline played out very well.
I think Jeffrey Archer is an incredibly talented author and cannot recommend this book highly enough.
You can be sure that Jeffrey Archer’s books are going to be exciting. Having read his books years ago, they never failed to grip me, and whilst I hadn’t read any of the previous books in this series, and it took me a while to familiarise myself with who was who, this book is really an exciting page turner, and as usual Mr Archer delivers a cracking tale. Not only are there some master criminals at large, but there are also the Royal Protection Team, who have the task of protecting Princess Diana, whom we know could be a bit of a loose canon and doesn’t disappoint. You always know that this author’s books is probably 25% fiction and 75% truth. This is something that we’ll probably never find out.
The characters were likeable and well thought out, and I shall make sure that if there is another one in the series I shall be reading it to find out what happens to them all, as some things were left hanging in the air.
My thanks to the author, the publishers, and Netgalley for the ARC.
What can I say, Jeffrey Archer always delivers very readable books! It’s a well established formula and it works. I love the twists and turns the flawed characters, really enjoyable.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers
He has only gone and done it again. The greatest author of our time has produced another brilliant book that I could just not put down. I love the ongoing exploits of William Warwick and co and how each book just continues the storyline so that there is complete continuity throughout. =
I cannot imagine my life without a Jeffrey Archer book in it.
Amazing story from an amazing author.
Another enjoyable book from Jeffery Archer. The style of writing makes this a compelling book to read and it’s good to meet characters from earlier books. The story has two main threads, the security of and kidnap plot of Princess Diana and a wealthy crook and his corrupt QC. Easy reading and definitely recommended.
Fast-paced and exciting. Chief Inspector William Warwick is a Royal Protection Officer, looking after Princess Diana, who is unofficially separated from Prince Charles. He guards her discretely as she conducts an affair on a yacht and follows her every move. Then there's dodgy art dealer Miles Faulkner and his crooked lawyer to contend with. The story whips along and is a great holiday read.
