I enjoyed this read even though I hadn’t read the first book in the series. It was well written, loved the intertwine of the art world and the royal family.

Jeffrey Archer’s books have sold about 300 million copies worldwide over 40 years or so - he is clearly a very successful author of enduring popularity and Next in Line will undoubtedly be another bestseller. Despite all that, this was the very first Archer book I have read and it will probably be the last. I am always prepared to suspend disbelief in the interests of a good read but this book required me to do so so too many times for me to enjoy it. Not my cup of tea at all.

I hadn’t realised this is book 5 in a series and I’m popping out to buy the rest straight after I’ve finished this review. I thought it was fantastic. A real page turner and incredibly well written. I’m desperate to know the full back story and gripped on what is going to happen.

Loved it... giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because I wish the two main plots (Princess Diana, art theft) and smaller sub-plots (terrorism, fraud, corruption, courtroom drama, betrayal) running through the book were woven together a bit more tightly. But it's still a great page turner and you won't be able to put it down once you are about a quarter way through. The characters are super well laid out and you are swept away by their stories. And even though it's actually fifth in the William Warwick chronicles, it's also perfect as a standalone! You don't need to have rest the first ones to grasp the storyline at all.

London 1988, and the nation has fallen under the spell of ‘the peoples princess’ HRH Diana, Princess of Wales!

The storyline features The Royalty Protection Command, who are entrusted with the safety of the Royal family, and they’re really going to have their work cut out in ‘Next in Line’, to protect one of their royals in particular.

Following doubts about the Command team’s ability and performance, a Scotland Yard squad led by DCI William Warwick, are sent in to investigate, because anything less than the utmost dedication to duty in the protection of the Royal family, will not be tolerated.

Running parallel to this is the story of a jailed criminal with an interest in fine art, and a private collection that would make many green with envy.

The two storylines are clever with many twists and turns, making for a fascinating and gripping read. Archer is adept at pulling many threads together to produce a satisfying conclusion, and it goes without saying that the research involved is exceptional. A terrific read!

Wow, what a rollacoaster of a ride, I love that it’s about the Royal Family, brilliant read and thoroughly enjoyed the book. Fantastically written as always

A follow on to the Miles Faulkner saga but can be read as a stand-alone. It is based on the art world and protection of royal family - two plots entwined and very cleverly written. This book kept me interested and was a real page turner. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a slow paced well thought out novel with a great conclusion.

Jeffrey Archer is back again with the 5th installment of the William Warwick series. It is a thrilling read that will grip you from the start till the end. It will leave you yearning for more action from the dearly loved characters of William Warwick and Ross Hogan.

Even though this book is a part of a series, I read this book as a standalone and I was not disappointed. It took me some time to make sense of what was going on and truly understand the characters. After reading this book, I will surely pick up the other books in this series.

I'll be honest, the first and last time I read Archer was when I was a teenager. I recall being captivated by his story-telling but never really continued reading more of his masterpieces. More than a decade later, I am enraptured by Archer's mastery of words once again! This time, more permanently lol!

The story takes place in 1988 when Britain along with the rest of the world have fallen in love with the "people's princess", Princess Diana! Scotland Yard's Warwick and Ross now have the responsibility of protecting the Royal Family, especially the beloved princess. However, as the story unfolds, protecting the royal family is one daunting task amongst many others they have to face. Miles Faulkner and Booth Watson reappear in this installment as well with character arc's you won't be expecting!

The story is packed with action, fraud, terrorism, betrayal, and some courtroom drama! By the end of the book, you'll find yourself eagerly awaiting for the next book in the series.

A must read for action and suspense junkies!

Overall rating: A solid 4/5

Thank you NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, and HarperFiction for the ARC!

Fascinating Storyline and Characters!😲😡😢💥
Betrayal At Every Turn!😡
Next in Line (Detective William Warwick #5)

I haven't read a book by this author for a number of years, I missed his writing!😍 I do, however, wish it was set in a more up to date decade than the 80's and that the Royals, especially Princess Diana, was left alone!😔 I hope that, that part of the story wasn't based on fact, but accept he was in a position to know, at that time! Our Country and the World, need to let her rest in peace after all these years. It really annoyed me actually!😡

The multifaceted storylines were all either intriguing or, as they built, down right gripping! I found all of the police, royal protection agency and counter terrorism unit insights, not only fascinating but detailed enough without coming across as a police handbook.😉 All of the main characters, even Miles Faulkner, grew on me. I especially liked William, his wife Beth, and Ross Hogan, I did find a few of the lesser characters, Booth Watson and Lamont for example, a bit one dimensional and obvious though.😕 The switching from one set of characters and storyline to another, mid chapter, can be a little jarring, but thankfully I got used to it quite quickly.

This book is definitely worth the read, especially if you've been reading the other books in the series and can fully appreciate the characters backstories. Unfortunately I haven't read them, but I still found it easy enough to follow as a standalone. The writing has wonderful dry whit sprinkled throughout along with the self deprecating humour you'd expect from tight knit units of the Police or Military. An enjoyable and engrossing read!🌟 I'd like to thank the Publisher who supplied me with this book via NetGalley. Debbie, 1970, UK

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for this ARC.

Despite this being the fifth book in a series, I chose to read this as a stand-alone.

I have read books by Jeffrey Archer before, just not this series and found Next in Line flowed well with a fast pace and many twists and turns, as with many other of Archer’s books.

I did have some confusion at the start of the book with the switching between the names and surnames but if you read as part of the series, you probably wouldn’t struggle with this.

Overall, I really enjoyed this fast paced thriller and I feel like I could easily pick up another book from this series and follow along.

The 5th instalment of the William Warwick chronicles and just as good as the rest. This time we have the added dimension of Royal Protection in addition to the usual Miles Faulkner storylines. Another interesting crime and punishment story with criminal justice interludes alongside art history. Only Archer could weave them all together so seamlessly. If you’re a fan of Jeffrey Archer novels, this won’t disappoint.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an early copy in exchange for this honest review.

A novel from an acknowledged master of his craft and it lives up to the standard set by him, and more. Highly recommended and thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me a copy as I really enjoyed it.

I enjoy all Jeffry archer books and this was no different. Fast paced and lots of twists and turns. Another great read

This is the 5th book in the Warwick seties and you won't be disappointed. It hits the ground running from first to last page as usual with twists and turns in every chapter. Again we need Faulkner , his wife and Warwicks staff .
The protection crew Warwick puts in place for HRH and a pending terrorist attack seem separate issues but are they?
The book as you would hope is fast pace so turn off all devices and put dinner in a slow cooker and settle to read this 5*** book Archer at his best.

Jeffrey Archer never disappoints. A really good book with several story lines which just kept me reading however I really didn’t like Princess Diana being mentioned. I’d have preferred an anonymous princess that we assumed was Princess Diana

This is only the second book that U have read in this series, and once again I read it in one day keen to know what happens.
To begin with I was confused as to who was who with the changes between surnames and forenames. However, I soon sorted the out. I also couldn’t work out where all of the stories were going to join up, but that’s part of the intrigue.
This is an easy book to read, and I believe would be easy to put down and pick up again; should you need to!
As one of the other reviewers has stated, my favourite person is now Ross and I was really upset for him in his final part in the book.
The only thing that I disliked was that the author used the real names of the royal family and I was slightly annoyed with the way Diana was portrayed. I’ll get over it!

This is book #5 in the William Warwick series. As the books in this series do follow on from each other, I would recommend reading these in series order so not to spoil any of the plotlines!

I am a big fan of this author, but I have to admit that I have had mixed feelings about this series. I have enjoyed immensely a couple of the books but then the others not as much, and whilst I liked reading this book, it does fall into the latter category. We are back with Warwick and his team who have been posted into Royal Protection duties. I have come to like Warwick’s character, despite struggling with him at the beginning of the series, but I must say that DI Ross Hogan is now my firm favourite! The book follows several storylines – we are yet again following on from the cliff-hanger of what happens to Miles Faulkner and Booth Watson, we see the introduction of a certain people’s princess and there is also some terrorist plots for Warwick and his team to foil.

The book moved along at a good pace. There was rather a lot going on, but it was all easy enough to understand. As in true Archer style, all the storylines cleverly weave in and out of each other, with cliff-hanger chapters and suspense a plenty! I was gripped by the storyline very early on and loved the switches between the different characters for their own chapters. The author obviously draws on some of his own experiences, and what I love about these books (apart from the fantastic storytelling!) is that you know this is how things would have happened – a smattering of truth mixed in with all the fiction!

Whilst it wasn’t my favourite book of the series, it was still a highly enjoyable read! There’s lot of action - both physical, police procedural and courtroom based! – plenty of twists and turns and the usual red herrings which the author does so well! Would recommend!

This is a fast moving story written in the typical Jeffrey Archer style. It ends as usual with a cliff hanger as the story continues.
It is an enjoyable read and is a good old fashioned story of good versus bad. Normally good prevails in his stories but the cliff hangers always need the reader to carry on to be sure that the good guys win!
I think it is a perfect holiday read.

This is what you would expect from Jeffrey Archer. A story that is carefully contrived, carefully researched and delivered with his inimitable writing style. As ever, the writing is interlaced with humour which is good. The Warwick family are back. William has been promoted and his wife Beth who deals in art works is having a choppy career. Father Sir Julian is still a senior and respected lawyer. BW, one of the senior defence lawyers is still a betrayer of his profession. The main theme is that the royal protection officers have been discovered to be acting illegally so are replaced by Warwick and his team. That involves one of them with the unenviable job of protecting Princess Diana. That leads to an exciting conclusion. This a good read and I recommend it.

This latest William Warwick novel reads well as a standalone novel with a hint every so often to previous books in the series. Based in 1988 it deals with 'Diana Fever' and the Royal Protection around her as well as other plot lines involving William Warwick's father, sister and wife. I felt that this book had been 'cobbled together' a little, a couple of ideas but not enough to fill one book. I felt it did not read as fluently as other Jeffrey Archer books.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for the advance copy of this book.
