My thanks to HarperCollins and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Next in Line.
What can you say about a Jeffrey Archer book that hasn't already been said - he knows his craft and is good at it. The twists and turns of the novel were captivating and kept me hooked throughout. This is the first of the William Warwick series I have read but I'm tempted to go back and read the rest.
My thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read in this series, although I have enjoyed many other Archer books.
This book was gripping from the start and I thoroughly enjoyed every twist and turn! I will be getting my hands on the whole series now as I enjoyed it so much!
Another great Archer novel. Absolutely loved it
I really think it would make a great TV series.
Lots of action, enjoyed the royal behind the scenes bits as well. The characters are so well drawn. He uses his knowledge of prison to good effect.
Looking forward to the next in the series
This is the second book I have read in the William Warwick series and it seemed rather similar to the first. The plot is equally implausible, though still satisfying in a comfort-reading sort of way, but I am always left a little disappointed by the lack of depth in Jeffrey Archer's writing. However, knowing what to expect of his writing: slick, fast-paced action and an absorbing, if undemanding, read, I will probably continue to read his books when in need of escapism. On this level he rarely lets the reader down.
Another enjoyable read from the DI William Warwick series and his old adversary Miles Faulkner. Lots of twists to keep you guessing.
4 stars from me for this one.
I've read a few different novels from Jeffrey Archer in the past but this is my first in this particular series.
On reflection I think maybe I was at a slight disadvantage because of this. I found that there were a few too many characters to keep track of which readers of the series probably would have coped with just fine.
However, the overall story was good, if a little slow for my liking. It was a little short on action, focussing more on the procedural side and so I did find it a little slow for perhaps the first half.
Overall though it gives something slightly different to the normal crime thriller with dealing with the art world and involving royalty (specifically the royalty protection team and following HRH Lady Diana).
I enjoyed it but it lacked a little punch is probably how I'd best summarise my overall lasting impression.
Many thanks for the ARC.
Having read many of Jeffrey Archers books in the past, this one has also lived up to the expectations. It's fun, suspenseful and offers a glimpse into both the police work and the behind the scenes of the art world The inclusion of the Royal member, a Princess, easily draws parallels with HRH Princess of Wales, who Mr. Archer met, in part when he hosted charity auctions that Princes Diana attended. The book grips your attention and you make sure to find the time to read it, until its completed. A pleasurable read !
I actually enjoyed this one more that the previous novel. Typically good writing from this author, held my interest for start to finish. I would recommend
DCI William Warwick is quietly delighted to know that, following his and DI Ross Hogan’s unauthorised trip to Barcelona, Miles Faulkner is once again behind bars. However, he fully appreciates that he could find himself in difficulties when cross-examined by the prisoner’s QC Booth Watson, a crook if ever there was one! Meanwhile, his wife is busy co-ordinating a Frank Hals exhibition at the Fitzmoleon Gallery and William’s concerns about his wife’s growing friendship with Faulkener’s wife Christine cause him yet more concern.
When called into the Commander’s office to be told that he is wanted to head a somewhat different undercover operation into suspected failings in the Royal Protection Squad, and in particular it’s commanding officer, Superintendent Brian Milner., William realises this will take precedence over everything else for the foreseeable future as royal security is of paramount importance with terrorist threats always just around the corner. Princess Diana is in need of a new Protection Officer and Ross Hogan is the obvious person for the job. DCI Warwick joins the team as Milners second in-command whilst still managing to keep a low profile. However as several others are quietly slipped into the same department at the Palace it becomes obvious that the more long-standing members of the Protection Squad have become extremely lax. Ross Hogan finds himself in much demand as Princess Diana enjoys a busy social life amongst the nightclubbing fraternity and finds himself with very little free time to spend with his young daughter. He particularly disapproves of her growing friendship with a well known playboy and is convinced it will lead to more trouble……..
Meanwhile there is still the problem of Miles Faulkner, is wife, Christina, and - of course- Booth Watson!!
Jeffrey Archer has written another cracking novel and leaves the reader itching to get their hands on the next in the William Warwick series.
I always love a Jeffrey Archer, and this book continues the story of DI Warwick and his intertwined worlds of high profile crime and the art world.
This time around his crack team concentrates on corrupt cops in the royal protection team, and also sees the return of his old enemy, Miles Faulkner.
After the last book I’d hoped to see the last of Miles but actually it was good to catch up with his old adversary again this time!
As usual it’s fast paced, lots of good 80s references and this time introduces Lady Di!
It’s a good old fashioned holiday read and I’m already looking forward to the next installment!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
Ok so please don't shoot me but this is my first Jeffrey Archer novel!! It's incredible to think that - for whatever reason - I've just not read one. After sitting down to Next in Line, the premise excited me, I absolutely adored the storytelling and the fact that Princess Diana was a subject matter and in need of royal protection!
It was a wonderful read, the plot and sub plots worked well and this is such an easy book to read. Very well written I have to say I loved some of the main characters and some of the little ones, I mean figuratively! William's daughter is a delight and her "special" relationship with Diana a reader's dream!
Really loved this book and will endevour to read not only more of the William Warwick series but more of Archer's! Why haven't I read more?!!! Must put that right soon.
Next in Line Jeffrey Archer
Well what can I say, another page turner from Jeffrey. This is the fifth instalment of his William Warwick series of novels and it certainly does not disappoint. If you’re already aquatinted with this detective welcome to his latest assignment, if not, why not ?
It’s 1988 and Princesses Diana is everywhere. So it’s no surprise that William and his team are given the duty to protect one of the most famous women in the world. No easy task when you know that this woman has a mind of her own and is prepared to break rank when she deems it necessary.
Also his old adversary Miles Faulkner is still on the scene, like a thorn in his side.
Elsewhere the cast of characters from his previous books all make an appearance and and it’s through these people that we see the other side of William as a husband, son and father, not just a detective.
Overall this is another great tale from a master storyteller. I would give this 5⭐️ Enjoy
Many thanks to #NetGalley for my ARC of this novel.
Jeffrey Archer continues his William Warwick series with the fifth book, Next in Line, set in the times of Princess Diana. A maverick in more ways than one, the charismatic princess is the darling of the adoring public, but a nightmare to people tasked with protecting her. Her security, including that of her fellow royals, is not up to the mark thanks to corruption and highhandedness in the Royalty Protection Unit and, William Warwick and his team from Scotland Yard—fondly called the Murder Squad— are given the delicate job of investigating the matter and bringing the guilty to book quietly. In addition, the Counter Terrorism unit too needs the Squad's support to thwart an attack—the largest on English soil—planned by foreign terrorists.
But clouds of censure and possible jailtime hover over the youngest Chief Inspector and his partner, Inspector Ross Hogan, as the less than lawful tactics employed by them to bring back their old nemesis Miles Faulkner—a crook who had escaped from Belmarsh prison and ran to Spain—from his hideout could be brought to court anytime. While Faulkner is plotting to use the detective duo’s transgressions to get himself out of prison, his cunning lawyer, QC Booth Watson, is concocting a scheme of his own to cheat everyone and become filthy rich. To complicate matters, Warwick’s wife Beth, employed in a prestigious museum in the city, is a close friend of Christina—the unpredictable wife of Miles Faulkner—who is quite fond of money and the luxuries it brings. Can Warwick and his team, and his family, defeat the multiple adversities and come out on top?
Archer, in his eighties now, keeps churning out novel after novel like clockwork and, happily for the reading community, doesn’t seem to be thinking of stopping! Being the fifth in the series, Next in Line has its major characters already established and I had a little difficulty figuring out who is what due to my late entry with this one. There are several subplots continuing from the previous books and reading them in proper order would greatly enhance the fun, in my opinion. Archer brings together his knowledge of the British royalty, his research into the novel’s period and setting, and his flair for spinning a fine yarn to entertain the reader from start to finish. Warwick comes across as a gentleman cop and a consummate family man whereas Ross Hogan is apparently more colourful—though he doesn’t have much scope to show those colours in this outing. Other members of Warwick’s team are also distinctive, and perform their significant parts with distinction, making one question naming this series after Warwick alone.
Compared to the sharp, brutal thrillers that abound the literary market these days, Archer’s writing feels charmingly dated as he takes his time building the story with many seemingly superfluous asides. Unlike some of his previous works where the characters were either good or bad, this series has a few grey characters, which is a welcome change. Next in Line is a fine addition to the William Warwick series and my suggestion to fellow readers would be to read the previous four books before getting to it, for maximum enjoyment!
I’m grateful to HarperCollins UK for the advance copy of Next in Line through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
Another enjoyable page turner from this author with some great twists and turns. I only hope he had a greater plan for the characters of Beth, Christina and Artemis, because so far they are truly annoying and take away from what is otherwise a good plot. If he is trying to be politically correct with these female characters, it really doesn't work. Otherwise, really enjoyed it, looking forward to the next one.
Having read a number of Jeffrey Archers earlier works I was really looking forward to this book. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed. I found it unbelievable, slow and extremely cliched. I wasn't going to give a review because I was so disappointed but felt it best `to be honest.
A disappointment from what has been such a successful author,
Miss this one.
Next in Line is the fifth story in a series about Met police officer William Warwick. Whilst it may be read as a standalone, there are recurring characters and each of the books develops people and former plot lines a little further.
Warwick is tasked with weeding out corruption in the Royal Protection team. One of his team is tasked with personal protection for Princess Diana. In another thread, a corrupt solicitor, retired police superintendent and a prisoner collude in Machiavellian fashion to draw the threads of another tale to a conclusion. This is fast paced with various plot lines delivered in true Archer style. Short chapters that leave cliffhangers and make you want to read on just a bit further!
Having read a couple of non fiction accounts of the way in which the Royal Protection group operated and became a law unto themselves, this book has more than a ring of truth. It’s a great escapist read; true to life, engaging and a couple of characters to root for. I do wish Warwick’s wife would drop the ‘caveman’ bit. It grates, especially in the audio version. That aside, this showcases Archer’s talent for storytelling and I thoroughly enjoyed it. He redrafts over a dozen times before publication and such attention to detail shows in the final work which is tight and fast paced. Another couple to come in the series, I believe. Cant wait.
My thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley
This was my first Jeffery Archer read and whilst it was okay, it didn’t blow me away. It was a book in a series featuring the police officer William Warwick and consequently it probably took me a bit of time to get my head around characters that would be familiar to his regular readers. A reasonably well-plotted romp without much depth, it did not make me want to rush to read his other books.
With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review.
Another excellent feat of storytelling. The plot just whips along and Warwick etc are a good bunch of characters. I enjoy all the arty stuff too and hope Beth and her paintings are featured in the next books too. Not too enamoured of the 'Diana' plot but at least her creepy butler only got a small mention. Thanks to Netgalley.
What a fantastic book, Jeffrey Archer brings back William Warwick for his fifth instalment in the fabulous Next in Line.
In this book his team have to protect Princess Diana and it has a real royal theme to it, brilliant for the Platinum Jubilee year.
There's lots going on with all his family and colleagues and of course Miles Faulkner. His books are so good and so well written and researched, you feel they could be true. A fantastic series.
Very excited for the next book in this series. If you haven't read any or many of Archers' books, start at the beginning of the series, so you don't miss out. so many treats in store for you.
A big thank you to HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, As usual Mr Archer, it's been a pleasure.
Royal fever is sweeping the nation. Britain is falling in love with 'the people's princess'. This is an ideal setting for Jeffrey Archer's crime thriller, Next in Line. It is so gripping, I could not put it down. Detective Chief Inspector William Warwick and the Scotland Yard squad get the call to undertake the investigation of the elite Royal Protection Command and its commanding officer who have to be the best.. it is worse that it first appears. A week link could spell disaster.. I follow the gripping story to learn which target is next in line. It does not disappoint! Maverick ex-undercover operative Ross Hogan is superb. Archer's books make for a gripping read!
