This book has an unbelievable assortment of stunning photographs of all kinds of butterflies.
It's an insect that I feel deeply connected to (it is, after all, the meaning of my name!) and it's an incredibly beautiful and majestic one, and extremely important to the global ecosystem, much like bees.
As I said, amazing photographs and detailed information on this tiny but beautiful insect.
Besides, who doesn't love butterflies?
I have photo envy after reading this book!! I love taking photographs of butterflies, and this book is just filled to the brim with the most stunning photographs of butterflies and moths from around the world! Isn't nature amazing?!!
This is a book that allows you to learn while you're looking! There's a great mix of information about the world of butterflies, alongside the awesome photographs and it's made me even more determined to get out when I can to take more of my own photographs of these beautiful creatures.
I also loved the focus too on moths as they're mostly forgotten about, or not thought of as highly as butterflies, but some of the photos included make you realise just how stunning some of them are!
The text looks into each species, the anatomy, habitats, lifecycle and behaviour and now I know a little bit more about these wonders! A beautiful book for anyone to enjoy!!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Absolutely amazing photos of butterflies.
This was such a fantastic book full of stunning photographs. If you are looking for a photograph book about moths and butterflies look no further. I just loved the close up beautifully detailed images. I just couldn't get over how amazingly cute they look close up.
The book has a fantastic layout that flows so well full of wonderful colours looking at each butterfly or moth with a few lines about each one. This would make a fantastic book for those who love nature or nature photography. It would be a great family book as everyone can enjoy this book. It would make an amazing coffee table book that visitors could look at and be in awe of the pictures. I especially loved the section showing the 4 stages of development in pictures. I was also excited to find out that one of the moths described in this book is one I see flying around my area. I must remember it's name lol. I'm terrible at remembering names. I was particularly fascinated by the butterfly with transparent wings. It was so fascinating and I also learnt a lot from reading this book.
Many thanks to the author and publishers for putting together this amazing book for us all to learn from and enjoy.

Butterflies: Beautiful Flying Insects. By Juliana Photopoulos. 2022. Amber Books (ARC eBook).
A great-looking reference book for butterflies and moths. Captioned, close-up, photographs are included for each insect mentioned, relating the physical descriptions and the habitats they live in. The anatomy and behaviors are supported by the photographs and some interesting caterpillars and cocoons are included as well. From the Monarch and Luna Moth that I’m familiar with; to the Dead Leaf, Emerald Swallowtail, Hecale Longwing, and Malachite; Butterflies: Beautiful Flying Insects will stand as a solid guide for those looking for easily digestible information, and also as a lovely coffee table book filled with beautiful macro photography.
Butterflies by Julianna Photopoulos was a beautifully illustrated book with so much colour and clear photo's of butteries with a short explanations about the life of these beautiful insects.. Now, who does just love watching butteries. The author has captured these beautiful insects just perfectly.
I loved looking and reading this book. A must book if you just love Butterflies and a perfect coffee table book..
Highly recommended!
Thank you to Amber Books Ltd & Netgalley for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily
I love butterflies so how could I resist this gorgeous book? It’s packed full of wonderful photographs and short explanations about the life of these beautiful insects.
I have quite a few different field guides to moths and butterflies on my bookshelves, but this has got to be the most beautiful with loads of close-up photographs of the insects. The chapters are about species and anatomy, habitats, life cycles and behaviour. I knew that butterflies and moths obviously live in different parts of the world and therefore have to inhabit different terrain, but what was so fascinating to learn was that they don’t all live on nectar! Some of them do not eat at all! I can’t really comprehend that, can you?
Also they live such short lives, just to mate, lay eggs and so on. Obviously they are also great pollinators and they’re beautiful to look at, and of course photograph, if only they stay still for long enough!
Highly recommended!
So many colours, so much beauty! Gorgeous photos, an interesting book about butterflies.
It's a perfect coffee table book.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
A fascinating book with beautiful pictures. This book has lots of information on butterflies and moths.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not going to lie, butterflies freak me out, but they are an important pollinator and part of many plant's survival. This book provides information on butterfly species and anatomy, moth species and anatomy, lifecycle, habitat, and behavior, but the focus is the photography. This book has over 200 full-color photographs of the insects. The photos include everything from butterflies in nature to very up close high resolution images of their wings or heads. This book would be a wonderful gift for anyone who loves butterflies.
A gorgeous and educational book about butterflies ! I love books that share information in little bites, so these books always work great for me because I have a tendency to get bored easily when reading non fiction !
I loved all the macro photography in this book ! Those really close up shits are just amazing !
One more entry to this publisher's lavishly photographic guides to certain animals. Once again the bulk of the work seems to have been picture editing and locating, with just captions smuggled on to the pages to give us the info. But that's as deceptive as a dead leaf butterfly, for many people will be able to learn a lot from such small bites of knowledge. I for one would have had no idea that butterfly hues changed through the year, both in individual animals as they age and catch the sun, and in the species as a whole, with different shades allocated to adult butterflies depending on when they mature.
Either way, we first get one large chunk concerning butterflies, and through superlative examples we gain a picture of their habits and variety. Moths come next, for yes, they're lumped in with the titular critters. We get very similar content for the next chapter, even if the thrust is geared towards showing us their habitats and preferred environments each time. Their life-cycle and their behaviours are all that's left, but again it's deceptive in how much it can bring to our notice over a great spread of species.
I did get the impression this – especially with the moths section – will not appeal to all, and certainly of all similar books from this house this will trigger the most phobic reactions. With that in mind, I think the market for such extreme close-ups of the colouration, body parts, caterpillars and so on is not exactly that large. Still, this will either point the way for your visitors to your specialism in a pleasantly pictorial way, if that's the case, or give a good bit of colourful edification to your coffee table if not.
Butterflies and moths captivate, enchant, entice and beguile. The 200 photographs in this book are superb in their clarity and detail and capture the minutest details of the "hairs" and "feathers" as well as the shimmering colours. Not only that but there are breathtaking photographs of metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult. The author writes of the Lepidoptera with descriptions and facts to correspond to the photos.
Many thousands of butterflies and moths inhabit the planet except in Antarctica and several are magnificently showcased here. Habitats, life cycles and behaviours are also included. The amount of information contained in these brief descriptions is incredible...a real education in a beautiful format. I did not know that males and females can differ in colour or all of the differing eating methods. Most of us have seen occurrences of "nectaring" and "mud-puddling" in real life but I learned more about the reason for "shivering", effects of temperature changes, pollinating and that some "hover". Some migrate vast distances, others don't.
Favourites of mine in this book are butterflies which look identical to rolled up brown leaves, Camouflage is an amazing thing and done in many ways (mimicry, large "eyes" on wings, becoming poisonous, transparent wings) to keep predators away. Amongst the most gorgeous are Rajah Brooke's birdwing, zebra and emerald swallowtails, the "88" and "89", forest giant owl, comma (which I photographed yesterday!) and the peacock. But there are so many more as well!
Like so many, I've been fascinated by butterflies and moths since childhood. This fabulous book is the most remarkable I've seen on the subject. Unmissable.
My sincere thank you to Amber Books Ltd. for the privilege of reading this phenomenal book!
This book is bursting with exquisite close-up photographs of myriad species of butterflies. A true visual feast for the eyes and the mind! Nature lovers will delight in seeing the wondrous artistry of nature up close, as though each delicate butterfly's wing were carefully hand-painted using a heavenly colour palette by the Great Artist himself.
This is such a gorgeous book! I love butterflies and moths and I'm happy to have learned a lot more about them, and I'm even more convinced now that moths are terribly underrated. I had just saved a moth from my cat when I encountered the species in this book, which was really cool. The photographs are stunning, it would work perfectly as a coffee table book, one to peruse at leisure, but I found I couldn't stop turning the pages, I found the information so compelling and the artwork fantastic. Highly recommended.
Butterflies: Beautiful Flying Insects is a lushly photographed and scientifically accurate look at order Lepidoptera curated and written by Julianna Photopoulis. Due out 12th July 2022 from Amber Books, it's 224 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
This is chiefly a photographic coffee table book with concise (and well written) text captions throughout. The photography is *stunning*. It's full of full colour, often macro, photography with breathtaking detail and clarity. I have always loved butterflies and moths for their beauty and fascinating life cycles, but until relatively recently, I was unaware of their importance as pollinators and indicators of biodiversity and their critical role as an early warning system for loss of habitat and wildlife.
This would make a superlative choice for public or school library acquisition, as well as good choice for the home collection. Definitely a good one for readers of natural history. Proper nomenclature (Latin classification) is used throughout.
Five stars with the understanding that there's limited written content to go with the beautiful photography.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
4☆ A Fascinating Look into the Beautiful world of Butterflies 🦋
Butterflies is a beautiful book that gives you an in-depth look into these stunning insects. It looks at the Butterflies and Moth species, Their Habitats, The Life Cycle and their Behaviour.
There was a Good few I had heard and seen before and plenty I had not, which was brilliant as I love Butterflies 🦋 and enjoy discovering New ones. I particularly love going to zoos and Nature places to explore Butterflies 🦋
I loved the added addition of Moths as most people don't realise that moths are stunning too.
The only thing that stopped it being a full 5☆ is the pictures on my copy seemed very bright almost slightly distorted which would mean using the book to help with identification slightly problematic & the text was fairly small.
I imagine if you was using this book as a hardback copy it might be an issue if the print is small, as I was able to enlarge the text.
Overall this book is definitely worth reading if you adore Butterflies or want to learn more.
Check out my blog for some pictures of my own I have taken of various Butterflies.
Thank you to Amber Books Ltd & Netgalley for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I absolutely adore butterflies, I have ever since I was little. I always found them so beautiful and majestic, so I was so glad I was approved to read this.
The book is chockablock full of different types butterflies, moths and caterpillars, with stunning photographs and the close ups are phenomenal so detailed, that you will not believe the colours and detail. The nuggets of information that accompany the photos are perfect without being too sciencey and confusing.
I will 100% be getting a physical copy of this book, as not only is a a brilliant, informative book, but it will make a great coffee table book.
Butterflies is charming book, that everyone can enjoy.
This beautiful book features both butterflies and moths. It’s mostly photos, with a little text. The photos are gorgeous. The details they capture are astonishing, especially the wings. The books covers butterflies, moths, habitats, life cycle, and behavior.
I enjoyed this wonderful look at these interesting pollinators. It would make a great gift or coffee table book. It comes out June 14. Thank you to Amber Books and NetGalley for my copy.
This book by science writer Julianna Photopoulos has excellent information about the anatomy and characteristics of butterflies and moths. However, it is mostly a picture book. The colourful pictures of these insects from all around the world are absolutely stunning so this book is a delight.
I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
