So I made a boo-boo when I requested this book. I was completely unaware it was part of a series! This is the follow-up to Mathewson's Witherward. I was a bit confused upon starting the sequel (please see my unawareness above) but realise that there was a whole other book written with this world in mind.

I will most definitely be picking up the first book in the series and checking this book out when it is published next week. I'm kicking myself that I didn't realise it was a follow-up, but I'm a sucker for underground/magic Londons!

An absolutely solid 3/5 book that does everything I want my YA fantasy to do!

One of the best things I can say about Wayward is that, afternoon having read Witherward for a WHILE, I still remembered, enjoyed and was able to follow the story of these characters.

I find Cassia and Ollivan’s relationship to be the most compelling part of this story. Their family dynamics— and how often those dynamics set them at odds— makes them interesting to follow as they explore their world.

My biggest complaint is that, in a massive world with all sorts of magic AND a connection to the “real world” (which Ollivan is actually in at the beginning of Wayward), I don’t feel like I know all that much about the dynamics of the world by the time the book ends. I want MORE details about the politics of this alternative London; what do the other types of magic users do? What is their government like? How often does this other world interact with ours?

I feel like it’s these details and elements of world building that would make this book stronger for me. As is, I enjoyed it and will be keeping my eyes out for other books by Mathewson in the future.

I unfortunately struggled with this. It was not an awful book by any account. I think it was just a little too complex and confusing for me to follow. However, I loved the characters, and that’s what propelled me forward to finishing the book. And I’m not put off from reading other books by the author in the future. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author, for a chance to read and review this book.

Thank you netgalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review. I loved witherwards, so I was really excited and had high expectations for this book, and it did not disappoint. I really loved all the characters, and how their arcs developed, along with the plot. I also really liked how the plot developed to the ending. I cannot wait to see what Hannah Mathewson produces next! Considering all of these points, I am going to give this book 4/5 stars because I really enjoyed it and cannot see many areas for improvement.
