I read (and loved!) this last year and it's embarrassing to admit that I've forgotten to post this review (and this set of bookstas) until today, when I looked back at other graphic novels I've loved that I haven't talked so much about yet. *esp since I got this courtesy of NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Oops! 🙈

Blue's secret is that he's in love with his best friend, a lovely gardener named Hamal. And as if that wasn't complicated enough, Blue is a ghost and Hamal is the only living person who can see and talk to him (and other ghosts!)

Strange things start happening around Blue, which might be a side effect of him sticking around too long in the physical world (when he should be moving on), but ultimately is actually(!) a side effect of Hamal's other magical ability (which I'm not gonna say bec spoilers! LOL)

This was a really lovely comic that seemed to have quite a simple premise, but actually took me to places I didn't expect it to. There is softness in the way grief is portrayed here, a neutrality to death and dying as part of the cycle of life, and I loved how the character that we initially perceive as the villain to be defeated, will later on be the one who helps. ;)

The thing that caught my eye was the queer YA fantasy aspect of it, but I stayed for the magic system and the romance (this is HFN, for everyone who wants to know!!!). The art didn't strike me as exceptional at first but it grew on me and eventually I came to recognize that it was just perfect for the story it was telling.

Definitely read this is you find it in stores or at the library. I highly recommend it, and I'm looking forward to reading more from the creator.

Such a wonderful story. I really love the art style!! I really like the characters but I wish the book was longer so we could see more of them.

This was a very enjoyable graphic novel! I really loved the use of color in the development of the story. I did have trouble reading this digitally and ended up grabbing a physical copy once it was out in print. Highly recommend!

[3.5 stars] Such a cute read this one! I particularly love the art style, especially the intertwining with nature. The queer rep is also heartwarming to see, and it has an intriguing mysterious situation as well throughout. The story was just a little difficult to follow and had some parts that could've been explored more. Otherwise, it's a solid read!

Adorable! I thought this was a very cozy and comforting graphic novel. Although it was out of my comfort zone, it is an amazingly illustrated and diverse read. The characters were lovable and I enjoyed reading this because I could connect to their emotions and feel for them.

Sweet book! The art is so beautiful and vibrant--also very Ghibli-esque. I love the portrayal of grief and death & the queer relationship.

I loved the color palette in this little graphic novel. The blues and greens were made even more vibrant with the plants that took over almost every panel. The ghost story was a little odd but I really liked the character development that went along with these characters in this story. It's a beautiful LGBTQ+ story that will resonate with the right readers.

Such a cute and cozy graphic novel. I am so happy i read this book. Not all graphic novels wrap up their stories so well, so completely. But Taproot ALSO had an incredibly cathartic ending too. And that's all I ask for. What a sweet book. I can't wait to read more by Keezy Young.

I had this in my ARCs for approximately a thousand years and I kept completely forgetting about it, but I have finally gotten around to read it and it was so charming!
Very cute art, and a theme of life, death, and rebirth that is carried well throughout. The only ting is that I wish the other ghosts had more space - I want to learn more about this haunted found family!
Overall a very cute, fascinating read.

This was an absolutely heartbreaking but heartwarming story at the same time!

The characters were absolutely breathtaking and so loveable I just wanted to be their friends too!

The Artwork is stunning and a Masterpiece within itself put together with an adorable and captivating story.

I love the whole concept of plants, gay relationships, and love with an element of the paranormal and spooky vibes!

I will 100% be buying my physical copy and recommending it to my fellow comic /graphic novel-loving friends!
