This comic feels it has a touch of magic. There’s something special about the art - it is both whimsical and spooky. The characters have more than enough appeal and depth to them after just a few pages and course they’re relationship is adorbs! My only drawback was that once or twice I wondered how we got from Point A to Point B plot-wise - I skipped back a few pages to see if I missed something? But overall this was so sweet and dreamlike, loved it ♥️
A beautiful queer fantasy graphic novel, weaving life and death and all that’s in between, quite literally. Gardener Hamal can see and speak to ghosts, and his abilities form the crux of the story, especially his connection with ghost Blue. It’s a sweet story with gorgeous use of colour and imagery, and I loved the style used throughout. Young’s illustrations and artistic processes are shared at the end of the novel, which is really interesting to see and read about. A brilliant debut!
A lovely queer romance graphic novel about a gardener and a ghost falling in love. Gorgeous floral illustrations bloom together with the themes of life and death and second chances.
I thought this graphic novel was a joy to read. A simple premise told alongside lovely illustrations , what’s not to like!
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review.
Oh this was lovely. I think the artwork was really unique and not like I have seen before. Seeing the story of a gardener and a ghost falling in love was fun and also scary because like where was it going to go. It was pretty short and not a lot happened which is why I ended up giving it 3 stars. A solid queer graphic novel and we always need more of those.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the arc.
Absolutely adorable and a lovely story to endulge in. Taproot is relatively short, incredibly sweet, and the plot runs in a simple and convenient way, but not in an overly outlandish manner. It's everything you could want in a graphic novel, with stunning illustrations and a lovable cast.
a lovely, heartwarming little queer comic about a gardener and a ghost! i loved the premise and illustration style, and the little philosophical bits about death and mortality. peculiar and beautiful! - four stars.
This is THE MOST PRECIOUS little love story and I could read it a million times. It is my comfort read. I recommend it constantly, and I love the new edition with the extended backmatter and note from the author.
4.5/5
This story was so cute and sweet. The art was absolutely gorgeous and the themes of life and death and its continuity, how both are joined and weave in and out of each other were so refreshing to read about. The world needs more happy queer stories!
I was so excited to get around this graphic novel, so I am super glad I was not disappointed. I enjoyed it very much, I read it all in one sitting. I mean, a queer novel centered around ghosts and a gardener/necromancer...yes please!! Super cute. I thought this one would include a mystery element and perhaps more serious topics since "death" is a big theme, but it was nice to see this take a light hearted turn. Very witty and lovable characters. The reaper? My favorite! Hahaha.
Since the book is marketed as LGBTQ+ genre, looked forward to the romance, and honestly it was very cute. Even though it is a graphic novel and a short read, this romance did not feel at all rushed and we got a bit of a backstory for how the mc's came to be so close. Happy endings for everyone! Lots of phantom butterflies lol. Also, I'm glad that there was no labeling for their sexuality, it was left open and I feel that in doing so, many queer readers could identify themselves with the characters no matter their own sexuality.
This was so fluffy and cute. I loved everything about it from the character development down to the artwork! Its so worth the read! The story follow a guy named Hamal who could see ghosts that didnt move on to the other side, and Blue who is secretly in love with Hamal and like to hand out around him all the time. With an unexpected turn, Blue's love is tested. I really like the concept of second chances and this one beautifully had it. I think the book had dew downsides like the pace in the second half of the book was too quick for the plot's own good. And the side characters didnt appear that much.
Taproot is such a wonderful book. The story is incredible and the art is brilliant. I was instantly captivated and devoured the book in a single go. Highly recommend.
Taproot is a YA graphic novel that tells the story of Hamal, who has the ability to see -and talk- to ghosts, and Blue, the ghost he’s in love with. I read this in the middle of a very stressful week and it was the perfect story to disconnect, smile and enjoy how cute and wholesome it was. As someone who has Casper as favorite sad-romance scene -yes, over Titanic-, their impossible love was killing me.
“You don’t get to decide what will make me happy, Blue. You act like everything is fine the way it is, but it isn’t fine.”
() “What’s the point? I’m already dead.”
The drawings were a delight to see and I loved the colors. There were a few pages at the end where the author explains part of the process, with sketches of the characters and palettes of colors that made me appreciate it even more.
My only critique is that I wasn’t as much a fan of the plot, mainly because the ‘plot twist’ was too soon. While it surprised me, I wish there were more scenes to really care about the characters and build enough tension to make it explode when the twist was finally revealed.
I kindly received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Precious and gorgeous!
Blue and Hamal are too cute.
This was so calm and comforting. I will for sure be looking into more of Keezy Young's work.
So so sweet!
I really liked this graphic novel because the storyline, characters and artwork were perfect. I am a big fan of the tea dragon society and this was a great book to read after finishing that series. I loved how diverse the characters were, as many books stick with a straight, skinny and white main character, but this didn't. The cover was the main thing that drew me in and throughout the book the art did not disappoint at all. I loved the relationship between Hamal and Blue, it was sweet and genuine and you would watch it blossom as the story went on. There were a couple plot twists throughout it and i did cry a bit but overall it was an amazing book. Its definitely going in my top 5 favourite graphic novels.
Definitely go read if you like gay stories with pretty art!!

A beautiful queer love story with even more (if that’s possible) beautiful art to match. At times I found myself getting lost in the artwork before I could continue with the story. Filled with heart and humor, I would recommend this graphic novel to anyone in the mood for a heartwarming read.
I received an ARC of this for an honest review.
I thought this graphic novel was really good. I’m still getting introduced to this media of storytelling so I’m not an expert but I really enjoyed it. This tells the story of Hamal, a gardener, who can see ghosts and frequently speaks with Blue who is a ghost. The balance between life and death become unsettled and they have to make things right again.
CW: Bugs, General Creepiness, Death
What a sweet, creepy, tender graphic novel… and perfect for Pride Month! I loved stories, of all kinds, that blend romance and darker themes, like death and loss. If anything I just wish we’d have gotten more. A little darker, a little more time getting to know the characters. I feel like this I world needed opened up a bit. But I think it did a nice job of allowing you to care for these two. The tones in the artwork were lovely. I really enjoyed how earthy it was. A solid pick for anyone looking for a cute, queer story from a queer artist.
5 stars! The romance was so adorable and I fell in love with the drawing, art style, writing, and the characters. However I wish this book was longer. I want more of Hamal and Blues relationship. So overall I think it was incredibly good!
This was the perfect graphic novel!
We're introduced to Hamal, a gardener, that can see and interact with ghosts. The ghosts are playful, especially Blue, who can't help but love Hamal.
Blue is a lovely character that welcomes other ghosts to join this found family, and wants what he thinks is best for the people he loves.
This story nailed emotions like loneliness, grief, and hope. The colors were stunning, and character designs phenomenal.
The dialogue, especially banter, between characters provided humor to the story, and felt real.
Character's expressions told so much here.
I'd love to see more stories set in this world, especially with how Hamal is picking up a new role.
I'd recommend this book to anyone, but undoubtedly Queer garderner friends.
