Taproot is a heartwarming graphic novel that'll make you smile. In this story, a ghost and a gardener fell in love. The development of the main characters' relationship wasn't clear but their interaction was adorable. The conflict in the story wasn't intense and was quickly and painlessly resolved. A lovely book to improve your mood within an hour.
Well what can I say about this book other than it being not only beautifully illustrated but also has a wonderful soul to the book.
The illustrations bring this beautiful graphic novel to life and really immerses you into the story and the romance of the book.
The book is about a boy named Hamal, he works in a flower shop tending to all the beautiful plants, however Hamal’s world is plenty a different from the one his fellow living souls live in. He is friends with a ghost, a ghost named ‘blue’. However Hamal has fallen for blue hard but Hamal and Blue will have to make the greatest sacrifice in order to save many of Hamal’s and blue’s friends.
* a big thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with an arc copy in exchange for an honest review *
This is a cute story of a Gardener and a ghost🥰.
Hamal is a Gardener and also an illegal necromancer because he has the power to see ghosts and he helped them to connect to the people. He is so a sweet and kind-hearted guy💕.
And there is Blue a ghost who always rooming around Hamal and is secretly in love with him.
But sometimes the forest is a creepy place for ghosts to summon him from the living world and the death reaper wanted to know about the illegal necromancer.
This is a very cute story of a gardener and a ghost and how they overcome their fear of the Reaper and confess their love for each other🥰😍
I've been putting off reading this for ages and IDK why.
It's really quite lovely with just the slightest hint of spoopiness. My favorite flavor tbh.
Taproot is a delightful little story about a ghost and the gardener who sees ghosts. I have to start this by saying the art is extremely beautiful. I really liked the style, the incorporation of the different atmospheres to depict the real world, the ghosts, and the "darker" forest of death. I also enjoyed the queer romance and the representation here and think it's definitely a nice quick read that's certainly enjoyable to get through.
Conceptually, it's cute and has a lot of potential; buuuut I really wish the story had been as well-thought-out as the art. The structure of the plot was absolutely all over the place, there's no clear arc for anything and it feels more like a series of mini-stories set in this world than a full graphic novel. There's nothing wrong with it being mini-stories but the pacing is still off, even in that case. I wish the comic had been like 100 pages longer with a better developed beginning and a more concise plot to follow.
Overall, I really liked the style and I would recommend it if you're looking for cute comics to devour!
Love the art style and there’s a beautiful cast of very diverse characters. The story itself is quite simple but with the way the scenes don’t flow very nicely. I found myself getting confused more than once.
The story isn’t anything our of the ordinary. It’s spruced up by the lovely art, but I would say I wasn’t hooked at any point, and it felt very rushed. I also don’t like the point where the story finished.
I would also say that adding a note on which way to read the bubbles would be useful.
Overall, a quick read, with lots of potential.
4.5/5
This was so adorable omg I really liked this one!
Taproot is a really wholesome graphic novel with a queer relationship at its core - one between a ghost and a gardener. It's a really fast read but some of the full-page illustrations are just so stunning, I had to take a minute to soak them in. The use of colour definitely stands out in Keezy Young's art style, I'm not an artist or expert so I'll try my best, but I love how the lines (?) made everything look so soft and gentle, there's a lot of warmth in the story and the art style which I loved.
Story-wise, it was a pretty simple plot with an interesting premise, the art style really complimented it, the characters were both adorable, the story was quite short so I didn't get enough time to get really attached or as invested but they were still good characters to follow in the story and I'll always love a wholesome queer relationship, and both of them are men of colour!
If i would describe this book in one word it would be cute. The art in this book is so cute. and colorful. The story was really cute and wholesome. The characters were very likable. I can recommend it to anyone looking for a cute and uncommon love story.
Taproot is an adorable graphic novel about a garden shop worker and the ghost that loves him. Blue died young in his life, but when he realizes that Hamal can see him, he decides to hang around his new friend. Hamal and Blue collect a posse of ghost friends, who hang around his garden shop job. But a mysterious dying forest keeps beckoning to the ghosts, and a grim reaper is looking for the necromancer responsible for the forest's appearance.
The art is phenomenal: simple, colorful, and cute. The characters are lovable, but the story was kind of light. I did feel like plot was missing in the middle, and the abrupt time skip was jarring. Overall it's a cute, fast read. 3.5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and Oni Press for my review copy of Taproot.
(Thank you NetGalley for this copy of the Graphic Novel)
It was a super cute, quick to read original story and the illustrations were super cute. A little bit nonsensical but I’m not complaining ☺️
An adorable story about a gardener and his ghost. While ghost/human romance isn’t new, I love that the author focused on balancing death with light. Blue and Hamal are both wonderful characters that I loved reading about!
I do wish that certain aspects were more fleshed out. While I’m not left with any questions, per say, I’m left feeling like I know bare minimum, especially about Blue.
A wonderful story!
This was such a quick and enjoyable read!
The art is magnificent and very pleasant to look at.
The story is very sweet and lovable, I definitely recommend this book for those that love comfy romance stories.
a bit rushed at times, but overall an adorable, fluffy (even though there's some scary things happening too) paranormal graphic novel - definitely worth a read! lovely queer rep and a beautiful drawing style!!
THIS IS SO FREAKING CUTE OMG
"There's nothing evil about death."
The writing is incredible and the art is 10/10. I feared for my emotinal well-being, and it opened a lot of 'Under the Whipering Door' shaped wounds. In the end, this could've been a really dark story and somehow Kezzy managed to make it light and wholesome, even with talks about young death.
Thank you NetGalley and Oni Press for this copy, it was the perfect read to star the weekend in high spirits.
While I thoroughly enjoyed my read through of this book, I feel it suffers the same fate as other graphic novels. There are missing points and sometimes the story skips to where I get confused. However, I loved the cute love story and the premise of life and death. The artwork was absolutely outstanding.
Taproot's plot was incomprehensible. That being said, the art is very pretty. This novel has current mass appeal as it conforms to current trends among youth people and it has the potential of becoming extremely popular and well-received because of this.
The narrative is messy and does not make any sense. As the readers, we are so brushed up in confusion that the final emotion-evoking scene does not achieve an impact. Abruptly the book moves into the future and turns into another story which was a lot simpler, but also a lot better. I would've enjoyed reading a collection of those more.
Thank you, Oni Press, for allowing me to read Taproot early!
I quite enjoyed reading this dark story. I found it quite cute as well!
this is such a sweet, cute, funny and lovely story about life and death. the artwork is mesmerizing! The characters are so cute together! I loved every minute of reading this. I could look at this art every minute of every day!
Taproot is a story about life and death with two boys at the center of it all. with Love and great humor we get to go along their fantastic journey together!
There were some gaps in the story but the artwork is absolutely beautiful! The characters feel very real and are easy to root for and love, and all in all this was a beautiful, sweet little love story.
Taproot is a cozy read with ghosts and flowers, a love story between a ghost and the queer gardener who can see him.
The art for this is absolutely gorgeous and chill, all green and luscious and soft. My only critic is that the pacing is a bit weird and some scenes don't flow well one after the other.
Overl I was delighted to have the opportunity to read this thanks to Netgalley and it's the kind of books that make you feel warn inside.
