This book was really insightful. It was different than anything I've read in the past. It really did impact my reading life in a positive way.

This book is beautiful! I liked the step by step photos which would be so beneficial when actually making one of the projects. The projects are actually modern styles of macrame and there are many I can actually see making myself, particularly the plant hangings and the rainbow. I would definitely recommend this to someone who wants to learn macrame.

This was okay, was hoping for something a little more interactive.

Still a lot of interesting stuff about macrame in general that I think would be more interesting for people already into it.

I recently go into crochet and along my journey I have started running into macramé masterpieces across the internet. I was interested in maybe starting this new hobby and this book has convinced me. Macramé here I come! Very good book for beginners like me!

I got a free ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book and think it’s definitely worth buying. I’m not experienced in macrame, but I think this book provides plenty of insight and instructions are clear. There is a guide on types of knots and plenty of patterns to choose from that puts them all together. The patterns themselves are beautiful and there are a wide variety to choose from. Pictures are beautiful as well. If you are experienced in this craft, this book will provide new inspiration on projects. If you’re new to this like me, it’s a wonderful book to learn from. I can’t wait get started!

I received a complementary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are entirely my own.

I'm a firm believer that macrame never goes out of style, and always has a place in the home. My plants like having pretty plant hangers (there are some really cool ones in here), and the wall hangings featured are pretty groovy! I really liked the pillow covers too. There are projects I didn't love because they weren't my style, but that's gonna happen with any craft book, and I'm not taking any points off for it, especially when I've seen examples of other people loving projects like the ones that aren't my jam. The instructions are all clear and well photographed, and while I think a beginner would probably be okay with this book, this seemed a little more intermediate to me. While I didn't see anything radically different in the projects (no macrame couch covers or what-have-you), the designs were more interesting than what I usually see. I'd definitely recommend to any fiber artist looking to add some new flair to their work!

I do request a lot more crafts books than I get a chance to try things out of. This time around, I sat down and actually implemented one of the designs.
I have been crocheting and even knitting on and off for a couple of years, but macrame felt just out of reach. It seemed too complex plus to retain in my head. It seemed like the type of thing that my mother was better at. I find it easier to follow exact instructions rather than improvise, and this book helped me do exactly that. It was my first and definitely not the last step into this field.
For someone who is just stepping into macrame (someone like me), this is a very helpful tool. In each section, we begin with the simplest form of either the plant hanger, the household item or the wall hanging and then we slowly progress to the more complex things. The more adventurous could just branch out at that point as well. The author begins the book with what art means to her and how she practices it. True to what she said, there is a meditative quality to the process. Once you know which goes in and out, you can settle in and keep repeating the 1s and 2s in your head as one thread loops around another. That is how I approached it and enjoyed it.
Although my digital copy was blurry, it nonetheless helped me make one plant hanger. I plan to try more before my copy expires. I tried to make mine with chunky cotton instead of the recommended jute but was satisfied with the result, which I guess is the ultimate goal!
I highly recommend this and the designs inside for those who have always been curious about macrame and what it actually entailed. I always felt with crochet and knitting (and even sewing) that people who liked math would find it easier to get to grips, and although it is not a deal-breaker, I think it might be advantageous here as well to see patterns as and when instructions are provided.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading and trial experience.

This is a comprehensive book showing how to make modern items for the home from macrame. The book contains full colour pictures and clear explanations about how to make the different projects, which include plant hangers and wall hangings, as well as a table runners, cushions and a bag, plus several others. I would comment that there are an awful lot of plant hangers in the book, so bear that in mind if you are not really a fan of them. I would have preferred a few more bags and a few less plant hangers!

The book goes through all of the knots you need to be able to do the projects in a very comprehensive manner, but due to the nature of some of the projects I would recommend this book to confident beginners rather than to complete beginners. It was nice to see other materials being used in the projects rather than just cotton: jute and raffia also make an appearance. Each project is explained well and is easy to follow.

With thanks to Netgalley and Pen & Sword for proving a free advance review copy. All opinions are my own.

Macrame is a long lost love for me. Did projects for many years also. So, when I discovered this book on Netgalley, could not resist myself from requesting it. Wonderful patterns and instructions from the author. If you are a beginner and want to learn macrame craft, go ahead. I would love to give the book 5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and White Owl for granting my request.

One of the many thing that I enjoy doing in my free time is various needlework hobbies that I have learned to do. Rather this is knitting up a pair of socks, crocheting a warm afghan for the winter, or tatting a little doily for the time. I have learned many skills in the needle art world! I am not sure about my other fellow needleworkers, but I love the challenge of learning a new skill!

In the last few years, I have saw the resurgence of macrame. I will be honest that at first, I was not interested in learning it. Just like in knitting, wall (or picture) art has seem to become a trend. I personally, think that my thread and yarn could be put to a much more practical and functional use.

However, Modern Macrame Style by Amaia Martin has shown me that macrame can be put to a functional use! This book is a perfect starting point for the macrame beginner!

Amaia shows and explains perfectly step-by-step knots and techniques for the newbie. Pictures are also clear so the reader can visually see the how each knot is made.

Next, the projects are prefect level for any newbie to make and to get start on a new craft. There are great patterns for plant hangers and various decor for around the home!

This book perfect for anyone interested in the macrame hobby and a must have on any needlework hobbyist shelf!

A beautiful book by Amaia Martin, an introduction to macrame with vast projects to start on a hobby or make a business of out it. Modern Macrame Style gives you tips from the author on how to prepare the materials you will need to undertake a macrame project and also gives you troubleshooting tips. The projects are arranged in helpful categories and Amaia Martin lists the materials you will need. Perfect for beginners, the images and step-by-step are extremely helpful. You will learn so many different styles of knots and your projects will look like you've been doing macrame for years.

I downloaded the book because I recently started to macrame. I love seeing new techniques and macrame designs, but being a beginner, I’m still looking for instructions that are easy to follow.

This book had good photos and easy to understand instructions. I’m excited to make something! The only downfall is, I could only view it on my NetGalley app. When I downloaded it for Kindle, the images were too small on my phone app and wouldn’t size up, and it wouldn’t show images on my iPad app. Hopefully the issue is just on my devices.

I am one of those people who was around when macrame first hit our homes, way back then. This book has quite a few more designs than what I recall. They are really great as design accessories and useful for home use.

This book is very well illustrated with photographs of step by step instructions. There are a lot of different knots and designs that are included, some very easy others require a bit more work, but all are lovely.
The book incorporates chapters to learn about knots and techniques, then to used there in making plant hangers, making wall hanging and lastly how to incorporate macrame in various other useful items to make such as bags, table runners and cushions to name just a few.
Great book.

Beautiful pictures, and easy to follow instructions. I particularly loved the market bag and the table runner. It was also great to have some hints about where to get the resources. Personally I would have liked some more choices in the ‘home’ section, but still loved this book!

Good book about macrame. The intro section talks about materials, and it gives steps and photos for various knot types. Then the book gives projects, with directions and photos, in chapters on plant hangers, wall hangings, and home (which I found to be a bit miscellaneous and also have some items that were additional wall hangings in a different style). I did really enjoy the bonus couple of pages about good types of plants to use in hangers. I feel good that I could make a project with a great end result using the instructions in here.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is incredibly beautiful: contains fabulously styled photos, outlines some really fun looking projects, and everything is in an easy-to-follow layout. If it wasn't for the cringe-worthy Indigenous cultural appropriation (including a pseudo-dreamcatcher project), and the slapdash, underwhelming (but featured) finale on plants to combine with macrame, I would have given this book an outstanding review.

**WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS BOOK:**
* The photos are lovely.
* The basics of macrame and several knots are really easy to follow, as are the descriptions of each project,
* All of the projects included in the book maintain a very similar look/style, making the whole book come together as a cohesive brand/unit. And the style is pretty, minimalist, and easy to incorporate into a range of interior designs,
* I LOVE that the author/artist maintains a focus on environmentalism, biodegradability and the functionality of her designs.

**WHAT I REALLY DISLIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK:**
* First: AND THIS IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT: non-Indigenous people absolutely need to stop designing and/or making Dreamcatchers, full stop. Plus, this design doesn't even come close to resembling a traditional dreamcatcher despite being given this name.

Dreamcatchers are traditional, SACRED, spiritual Anishinaabe culture and not cute trinkets or crafts. If you want one, please support an Anishinaabe maker by buying one from them. We are in a time of reconciliation, which is incredibly important given the treatment (passed and ongoing) of all Indigenous peoples. Publishing this pattern is 100% racist and wrong. In my honest opinion, these books should be retracted and reprinted without this racist, cultural appropriation.

* The write-up of the book explicitly states that the author would also delve into her favourite plants and how they style with macrame plant hangers. Given that this was highlighted as a feature, I was expecting photos at the very least. The single page at the very end was thus very disappointing, underwhelming and read like a slapdash addition. I adore plants, but don’t know every kind by name/latin name. I don’t understand why the other photos were so pretty and this section (that REALLY needed them) has none. Without identifying photos of each plant either in or alongside the macramé, I don’t think that this section deserves to be a highlighted draw for this book.

**CONCLUSION:**
If it wasn't for the cringe-worthy Indigenous cultural appropriation (including a pseudo-dreamcatcher project), and the slapdash, underwhelming (but featured) finale on plants to combine with macrame, I would have given this book an outstanding review. As it is, I fully believe that this book should be re-printed minus the "dreamcatcher" project as it it 100% wrong that it has been included.

Many heartfelt thanks to the author Amaia Martin, the publisher Pen & Sword, and NetGalley for an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

PLEASE NOTE:
I tried to publish my review on Goodreads as well, but this title is not listed on that platform at all. As soon as it is, I will print my honest review there too.

I just started exploring the art of macramé, so the Modern Macramé Style was the perfect guidebook for me!
I love that they used real photos to show the step-by-step for each knot rather than illustrations. In this way, I can follow and recreate the same knots easily. There are loads of useful information on materials, different type of knots, and amazing projects with unique patterns. This is simply a must-have for anyone who is looking to start their own macramé journey!

I was born in the 70’s. One of my aunts had a shit ton of macrame plant hangers and decorations hanging from the ceilings and walls. Her home was always a place of comfort, support, reggae music, and consistently overdone-on-the-bottom cookies. Perhaps all those are what lies behind my enduring love for macrame?

After the beginning tips and techniques, this book opens with plant hangers oh-so similar to those I used to see as a child. This chapter is followed by wall hangings, and home decorations. The layout is appealing and soothing. The author’s guidance is encouraging and kind. The photos in this book were all so appealing that they made me want to immediately go out and get all the supplies needed to start my own journey of macrame.

This is a lovely book that serves as an inspirational and instructive guide. I’m so pleased to have received a electronic copy of this wonderful book from the publisher and I am planning on picking up a physical copy for my own crafting.
