What I liked: I really enjoyed the past timeline about the cult and the strong female lead of this story. What I didn’t: I found it tough to keep up with all the secondary characters and I wanted a little more from the ending.
There are plenty of twists and turns in this one. I found myself completely hooked and unsuccessful at trying to predict where this would go.
I was instantly hooked by this one. It’s one of those books that pulls you in instantly and becomes completely unputdownable.
II’ve literally devoured this in just one sitting with no regrets. This is an absolute must read.
This was ok but just fell so short with all the other thrillers I'd been reading - the cult part was definitely interesting but it was all so chaotic and messy
Enjoyed this book fast paced and full of twists. I loved this authors previous book it’s still one of my all time favourites.
Rainey is an artist, she moved from New York to Washington State to be with her boyfriend Grant. Although they have been together a year she still feels detached from his friends.
When his female friends invite Rainey to Las Vegas for a hen party, initially she declines as she has bad memories of this place. She hasn't shared her past with Grant.
Whilst away her friend Braithe does not return to the hotel. Rainey receives a text that someone has her friend, it is up to her to rescue Braithe. But this will force her to face her past, a past that she has tried so hard to keep buried.
This book had great characters and I loved the many twists along the way.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Absolutely loved this book!
The writing style was really good and I look forward to reading any other books from this author in the future :)
I liked the premise of this novel, a girls getaway to Las Vegas but I did not enjoy the story surrounding the cult. There were elements to the writing I did not engage with and I failed to finish the novel
An Honest Lie by Tarryn Fisher is a compelling and thought-provoking read that explores the complex themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness. The story follows the journey of the main character, Hollis, as she navigates through the aftermath of discovering that her husband has been leading a double life.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is its unique and captivating writing style. Fisher's prose is eloquent and lyrical, drawing the reader in and creating a vivid and immersive experience. The story is also well-paced, with enough twists and turns to keep readers engaged from start to finish.
Another notable aspect of the book is the depth and complexity of its characters. Hollis, in particular, is a multifaceted and relatable protagonist whose struggles and emotions are depicted with sensitivity and authenticity. The supporting characters are also well-drawn and add depth and richness to the story.
However, some readers may find the plot of An Honest Lie to be somewhat predictable or clichéd. The themes of infidelity and betrayal are well-trodden ground in literature, and while Fisher brings a fresh perspective to these topics, some readers may feel that the story lacks originality.
Additionally, some readers may find the book's ending to be somewhat unsatisfying or unresolved. While the story does offer some closure for the characters, there are still some loose ends that may leave readers feeling unfulfilled.
Overall, An Honest Lie is a well-written and engaging book that offers a nuanced exploration of some weighty themes. While it may not be the most original or conclusive story, its strong characters and captivating writing style make it a worthwhile read for fans of contemporary fiction.
I thought this was a gripping fast paced thriller and I was engaged throughout, my first read from this author but not my last
This thriller was so good. It was very gripping, and I really liked the pace of it. There where parts that I thought where predictable, but some of the twists where insane! A definite must read.
I really enjoyed An Honest Lie. It was intense, gripping from the start, the characters were relatable and realistic. Would definitely recommend.
Something didn’t quite flow for me in this book, while the concept behind was great and there were parts I really enjoyed - it was just a little far fetched at times and I just couldn’t really get into it as much as I hoped.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for my review copy!
I was gifted this book on NetGalley but whilst I was waiting for the request I ended up purchasing it as I was so drawn to the blurb and the book sounded so appealing to me.
A girls holiday in Vegas, one person goes missing and it promised intrigue and suspense
However....it was so disappointing. What should have been a great thriller ended up being an odd tale about growing up in a cult/commune. There were also many holes in the plot mainly that as a reader we had to believe that these women were even friends.
Also it was on par with Dickens in term of ridiculous character names.
See my grid for some other thrillers I've read this year that have been so much more enjoyable
Thanks to @headlinebooks
And @netgalley for the copy.
This was my first Tarryn Fisher read and I'll definitely be back for more!
I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this which made me nervous however I am a sucker for fictional cultish behaviour and this book is full of it!
I've read a couple of Tarryn Fisher's other thrillers and really enjoyed them. This was no exception. I really enjoyed the dual timelines and the inclusion of cults. However there were some aspects that I feel the story could have done without; the gaggle of bored housewives seemed to take away from the story somewhat, for me. But overall it was a good thriller and a great way to spend an afternoon.
Rainy has recently moved in with her partner Grant and in doing so has made a new group of friends. When she gets invited on a girls night out in Vegas she's not sure whether she actually wants to go as Vegas does not hold good memories for Rainy. Reluctantly agreeing she believes it'll be a couple of nights of casinos and drinking but when one of the friends doesn't return home Rainy receives a message. Someone has her friend but they want Rainy because of her past. Can she save her friend and deal with reliving the past?
This story runs in dual timelines with Summer narrating the past and Rainy narrating the present. This is a cult story which I love. The past is definitely the most gripping parts of the novel. The horrible things that summer has to deal with. And that everyone else in the compound has to deal with.
This is an edge of your seat can't stop turning the pages don't want to put it down thriller. I didn't think I'd get so sucked in. I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys cult thrillers and gripping stories.
Tarryn Fisher never disappoints, I love her writing style, and this one is no different!
A great little story with a spin, lots of twists.
You'll probably look differently at your friends after reading this!
I wasn’t too sure what I was expecting going into this as this was the first Tarryn Fisher book I’ve read.
An honest lie was different to what I normally read with it being a psychological thriller with the theme of cults.
I think Tarryn Fisher did a really good job of writing the characters and made them dark and disastrous.
However, the plot just didn’t hit it for me… I didn’t really see any plot twist… it was a little underwhelming for me.
When Rainy reluctantly agrees to a girls weekend away in Vegas, she could never have imagined how fast her past would catch up to her. Because now a face from her past has returned. They've kidnapped her friend - and they aren't letting her go until Rainy comes to them. But Rainy knows more than anyone, that they are all liars.
I'm reading all the cult books at the minute - without even realising it haha! Another fantastic read of a cult that is possessive and absolutely terrifying!
I will never get tired of reading the cult stories - they are all so different, so intriguing and all so disturbing! Rainy is an absolute star of a main character, I loved her fierce personality and toughness. I'd love to read more stories with her in, she's just fantastic.
Lorraine (Rainy) Ives lives in a black house at the top of the remote Tiger Mountain. With friendships made in order to fit in which she could actually do without, the main protagonist goes on a trip to Las Vegas and ends up revisiting a place she assumed she'd never return to.
Tarryn Fisher tells this past and present tale exceptionally well, keeping matters edgy and unpredictable. A strong sense of unease prevailed throughout this revealing and compelling story. Well worth a look.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Headline via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
