I didn’t realise I was requesting only a sampler but this got me excited to read the full book.
Three chapters is not much to go on by to be honest which is why I can’t really rate it
I had the opportunity to receive the first three chapters of Holly Black’s latest book, Book of Night thanks to Netgalley and Del Rey UK and here’s a quick review.
Obviously i can’t just judge a book with only three chapters, but i’m going to do my best. my expectations for this book were pretty high i’m not gonna lie, i loved the folk of the air saga so so much it put me in a really bad slump right after. It’s been months since i last read it and it’s still on my mind every time, i remember loving everything about it, from the characters to the plot, the twists everything was on point and i just fell in love with all of it. With that in mind i was really excited when i first heard about this book and honestly couldn’t wait to read it.
I still haven’t read the whole book obviously i’m still waiting for it to arrive in my book mail !!!
Now, the first three chapters were honestly pretty interesting, and obviously not enough to really formulate an honest review but i have to say i’m not as excited about it as i was before reading them. Sadly i’m afraid i had to many expectations and these chapters weren’t really giving me what i was waiting for. The character of Charlie seems really really interesting and i really want to know more about her and what else will happen but i’m a bit scared of not liking it as much as i thought i would. However, i’m still waiting to read the whole book and only then will i be able to write a real review about it. Nonetheless i’m still looking forward to reading this book, i love Holly Black’s writing style and even though i’m hoping i won’t be disappointed, i’ll keep an open mind and read this book happily !
I was very excited to get access to the first 3 chapters of Book of Night. Not much you can really say about 3 chapters, except so far so good! It’s piqued my interest and I’m excited to read the rest.
unfortunately when I requested this I did not realise it was only a sampler of the first three chapters as there was nothing to indicate this in the title, therefore I will not be reviewing the sampler as I cannot write meaningful reviews for a couple of chapters. I am very much looking forward to reading the full book when it comes out and will review it then.
It was only a sample BUT OH BOY. What a sample!
It was so engrossing and immersive that I couldn't stop reading. I'm so excited for this book because Holly Black is returning with a BANG! I've never been so invested in a book that I've read only a small portion of.
Charlie already seems so fully fleshed out ARGH also the scene has been set.
(I'm picking up my Waterstones exclusive preorder today so definitely think it's on its way to being a 5 star read🤞)
A brilliant entrance to adult fantasy from Black. Slick characterisation with an entrancing female MC in Charlie Hall. This has all the promise of shady goings on and a gripping reading experience.
Why did I do this to myself? This is only the first three chapters so was obviously never going to be enough but I read it anyway and now I cannot wait to read the whole book!
Book of Night has the feel of another epic story and as always Holly Black’s writing is amazing and immerses you in this dark and shifty world.
I NEED THE REST OF THE BOOK ASAP - good job it’s out today 🖤
Firstly I would LOVE to thank the publisher and Netgalley for the first three chapters 😍😍 You’re the absolute best!!
I’m a huge Holly Black fan and this is one of my anticipated reads of 2022 and I absolutely loved the taster of this book!! ❤️❤️
I’m already so fascinated by Charlie - she seems so cool but with a side of melancholy and regret. I’ve met Vince and Posey and I’m totally intrigued by them too.
I’m so interested in where the story will go and what the shadow magic really is. The murder that happens early on totally has me hooked and now I’m just sitting and waiting for my copy to arrive from Waterstones 😂😅
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for sure
(This will be updated when I’ve read the rest of the book of course!!)
My first insight of a Holly Black book and it didn't disappoint! This three chapter excerpt has certainly wet my appetite and I found it most intriguing. I want to know more about shadow magic, Carapaces, Puppeteers and Gloamists. And, who was the stranger with shadow hands? I can see this book being a very popular read.
The first 3 chapters of Holly Black's debut adult fantasy.
It really set the scene for what the book is about. Gave us a little introduction to the characters and the basic magic system involved.
However, this sampler really left me feeling a little confused. The synopsis of this book held so.mucb promise for me, but I just didn't get enough of a feel for where the story was headed from this sampler to give a very detailed view of how I feel about it.
Thank you to Del Rey for my teaser of this book! I am so looking forward to this book and although I would have loved to read the whole thing early, I’m excited for what comes next!
I read this chapter sampler as soon as I received it and it did not disappoint. Extremely excited to receive my final copy as I adore Holly Black!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read these first few chapters of The Book of Night.
Absolutely devoured these few chapters. I literally cannot wait for my copy to arrive to continue. If you like Holly Blacks work this one won't disappoint.
This is my first read from Holly Black and I have mixed feelings. I have been given the first three chapters to review and I enjoyed reading them, and won’t mind reading the entire book. The introduction isn’t slow, but isn’t fast either, and a lot of information is thrust at the reader which gets explained consequently. The style of writing is unique, and is serious in a way not seen much in fantasy novels. The air of magic and mystery was nice to read, thrown in with humanised characters. The mix of real and fantasy was also a balanced blend, making the read more pleasurable. The only place I felt odd was the ending of chapters, which have no incentive to make the reader keep reading. Perhaps this is because these are the first three chapters, but all of them ended with a certain sense of closure.
Since the rating system is in whole numbers, I’d like to mention, so far, I’d rate the read 3.5 stars.
I don’t know how to rate this because while I enjoyed the first three chapters and think I will like the book you can’t really give a ranting to chapter sampler in my opinion, so I gave it three stars for now.
The concept of the world sounds really cool and I was hooked from the prologue and definitely will be buying the book when its released. Charlie seems to be a pretty cool main character and I’m just excited to see what her story is about.
Book Of Night
A tale of modern dark fantasy, shadowy thieves and secret societies.
This was delicious and dark, packed with danger and shadows.
I was immediately engaged into Charlie Hall’s urban setting where shadow magic is dangerous and profitable and our protagonist has a sketchy background to say the least. We learn some of her past and influences, and catch a glimpse of current day Charlie too who is on her journey of ‘going straight’.
The tone and atmosphere was thick from the offset. I am totally hooked and shall be ardently awaiting my full copy.
This is Holly Black’s first adult novel and I can honestly say that I will grab more of her work with two hands and a feral grin.
All my thanks to Delray and NetGalley for sharing this ARC sample in exchange for an honest review.
Publication date: 3rd May.
did not realise this was just a chapter sampler, but rest assured i will be reading anything and everything that holly black writes!
Thank you Netgalley and Random House UK for the first three chapters of Book of Night. All thoughts are my own.
I am thoroughly intrigued with the setup of this world. Not only did I find Charlie interesting, with her penchant for trouble and her past experiences, but I loved the world-building a great deal. What we get in this small excerpt of Book of Night is how your shadow can be more than something that simply follows you. The classes of shadow manipulators are presented, as is the first impression of Charlie Hall. I can tell she is going to be another fantastic leading character, and I can see how this dark, enchanting world is setting up for something brilliant. I'm eager to follow on from these chapters and find out more about the characters, their pasts and grievances, and most importantly, how their shadows fare.
I received the first three chapters from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Off the bat, I'm very intrigued by the shadow magic premise, and by how the story seems like it's going to be taking place in an underground world type of setting. The vibes reminded me a lot of Ninth House, although it feels a bit less profound and more like YA, which is why I'm not rating it 5 stars; I think the writing made the dark and gritty themes fall a bit flat. Although I've never fully gotten along with Black's writing style, the premise and plot of Book of Night seems super cool, and I look forward to reading the whole book!
Thank you for a chance to read the first three chapters of this upcoming book. I really enjoyed the opening of this book and look forward to reading the rest when it is released!
