Book of Night by Holly Black
Nowhere does it state this is only a sampler so l was extremely disappointed when l downloaded this after being approved. l wouldn’t have requested it if ld realised.
What l read was great and l would of loved to read it all and provide a proper review
The 3 stars are for it not being made clear what I was requesting not for what l actually read
I was very disappointed that this was a snippet of the book I will leave feedback here as it will affect my score but I will not leave a review for the snippet anywhere else. I was really looking forward to this and was sad when only the first 4 chapters were provided.
Didn't really enjoy it fell flat for me.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free sample of the first 3 chapters in exchange for an honest review!
I was not ready for the sample to be over, I wanted to carry on reading so badly! I was so intrigued by the magic system and the whole world that we were thrown into. I am so excited to read this whole book; even the prologue was fascinating. Such a great start to what looks to be a great book!
Book of Night showcases a new flavour from Holly Black.
While she is still the queen of the Folk, her foray into Adult Fantasy brings something desolate and darker.
The characters are interesting, but the story is only taking shape in these first new chapters.
We are giving glimpses of a complex magical system involving shadow magic. In this world, shadows are valuable and have an aura and power of their own.
I'm interested in continuing to read this book since I enjoy Holly Black's prose. However, I wasn't aware that this would only be a sample and not the entire book.
I liked the introduction and the way it gave us a peak of the characters. I liked Holly Black's Folk of the Air series and was quite attached to the characters so I had high expectations for this. I'm expecting quite a lot from this small snippet into the book and I hope it will be as good as it seems to be. I can't give it a really solid rating though since these were just a few chapters. Wish it said that this was just a sample though and not the whole book available for request.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to read the first few chapters of the book! What a start to the story i've been left eager to read more and really can't wait to see where it goes from here. I already know this is going to be an amazing book!
Great start and set up for the story to come luckily we don't have too much longer to wait
I wouldn't have requested if it had been made clear that this was just a sample. I unfortunately can't offer an opinion on the book from just this.
I received the first three chapters of book of night and really enjoyed the way the story opened, and am intrigued to see what will happen next, as the opening was quite dark, but gave us a lot of information about the world and the characters.
Book of Night, Holly Black
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Sci Fi & Fantasy
I love Holly Black's novels, I've read and re-read the ones I have. So I was excited at the chance to review this new one. However like other readers I'm REALLY annoyed that its simply first three chapters, this needs to be made clear before requesting.
I'm cross because:
A) I would not have requested knowing that it was only a sample.
B) I now have to write a review to keep up my Netgally totals, but have only a small sample on which to base it.
C) My time is precious too, and its been wasted reading and writing about a book sample.
I did enjoy what I read, but its not enough to see what direction the book is going. I'd love to read the full book depending on if its on KU, and/or price. Like many reviewers I love books and reading but simply don't have the money to indulge myself often. That's why reviewing is so useful for me, I get books, authors get a review. Always. Win/win for both. Throwing in samples without warning isn't playing fair. IMO.
Stars: Two. Sorry Holly, I hate doing that, low star review, but this sample simply isn't enough to judge. I don't see how anyone can rate a book on just three chapters...... I suspect the full book would be 4-5 stars, fingers crossed I can afford it/borrow on KU.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the first three chapters in return for my honest thoughts.
I am very intrigued already and can't wait to read the rest of this book. The world set-up is interesting and original, and I was truly sucked in from the prologue alone! I'll be reading this in its entirety as soon as it releases and updating with my full review then.
I was not granted access to the full book but only got the first three chapters. I don't like this. I prefer to get a full rejection if I'm not allowed to read the entire book. Reasons:
1. I'm totally not interested in sneak previews.
2. Now, I have to waste time writing something here to keep my NetGalley review percentage up.
3. It was nowhere mentioned that only three chapters would be given. This means that the publisher is misleading NetGalley subscribers to get free advertising on social media.
4. What can you say about three chapters? I review books in total, or I review not.
The three chapters were okay but that's all I can say about it. The story still hasn't started at that point and can still go any direction. I refuse to recommend a book based on some introductory chapters. So I'm not rating the book extract here, I'm rating the publisher's deception.
a good intro to this book! can't wait to read it all when it comes out in a few day (i have already pre-ordered my copy)
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the 3 chapter preview.
Hook , Line and Sinker!
Thank you and more please!!!
I read a sample of three chapters from this book. It seems good from what I’ve read but very different from Holly Black’s usual stories. I will be reading this when it releases.
Cant see anywhere on this that it's only an excerpt but that's all it is. It's fine so far, very reminiscent of Holly Black's usual writing which is marmite but I personally enjoy it.
Jumped at the chance to have a sneak peek at this much awaited and well anticipated book from Holly Black. Having read her Folk of Air series and Modern Faerie Tales, I can attest to the fact she is an amazing writer and every book she writes turns to gold! And wow. This one. The Book of Night. I see a best seller on the horizon here.
She has this amazing ability to draw you into the world she’s writing. She hooks you, drags your heart and soul into the story and then you’re left completely hanging on every word. I can already tell this is a book that I’ll eagerly devour. It’s one of those that you almost can’t read quick enough because you’re want to know what’s going to happen yet don’t want to read it too quickly as you’re enjoying it so much, you don’t want it to end!
I love the premise of this plot and story and I seriously can’t contain my excitement to get to read more of this.
Write the date in your diary people, preorder and then wait (impatiently) for the postman to arrive, pounce and read to your hearts content! Think that will be my 5 step plan now I’ve read the first three chapters. Need moreee!
Thank you to the publisher and author for the first three chapters of this book, in return for my honest thoughts and review.
Thank you to Del Rey UK and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the first three chapters of this book before its release.
The story follows Charlie Hall who is a low level con artist in a world of magic where shadows can be altered either for entertainment or cosmetic purposes.
Charlie is trying to distance herself from the underground world while doing odd jobs to get herself by. However her life is thrown into chaos by a figure from her past.
This book is one of my highly anticipated reads of the year and the first few chapters already have me hooked on the world and the magic involved in it.
I am already left with so many questions that need answering about Charlie and the other characters introduced and I cannot wait to read the rest of this book when my preorder arrives.
