A great mystery thriller that keeps you guessing .
Jenna Halliday a journalist with a Manchester paper has been commissioned to make a podcast about a 20 year mystery in a Wiltshire town. With four days to complete the podcast leaving home and a rocky marriage behind her makes Jenna's task more difficult.
Twenty years ago a car crash with four girls in the car happened on a quiet eerie road The Devils Corridor, after they were out clubbing . Olivia ,the driver was trapped and had to be cut out of the car and her injuries resulting in her having a number of surgeries . The other three were never seen again and no trace of them existed.
Jenna started to interview the relatives of the missing and Olivia herself. It became obvious to Jenna that everyone was lying and long held secrets made Jenna's task difficult. Dale a Detective Sergeant who specialised in cold cases tried to help Jenna ,but can she trust him and isn't he lying as well? The mystery deepens and more information comes to the fore . Things become more nervy when Jenna's life becomes becomes threatened .
A great thriller and a read that makes you want more.
In a rural Wiltshire town lies The Devil's Corridor. A road which has witnessed eerie happenings from unexplained deaths to the sounds of a child crying at night. But nothing is more puzzling than the Olivia Rutherford case.
Four girls drove home but after their car crashed only Olivia was found.
Twenty years later, journalist Jenna Halliday is covering the case. But the locals aren't happy with this stranger's arrival. Least of all Olivia.
Jenna soon starts receiving threatening notes and it is clear someone wants her out of this town before she discovers the dark truth . . .
Firstly, a huge Thankyou to Netgalley , Claire Douglas & Micheal Joseph for allowing me to read this Arc copy.
I was soo excited to receive this book!
I loved “The Couple At No9”, also by this author, so couldn’t wait to get started on this one.
The storyline is giving serious creepy vibes which I absolutely loved!! Suspicious characters, mysterious disappearances all packed into an extremely eerie setting!! 😱
While we’re engrossed in trying to discover what happened to these girls 20yrs ago, we also have an another storyline running along the side. 🤔
A storyline of a holiday to Thailand, A holiday that has a lot of its own strange goings on & its own set of untrustworthy characters.
I didn’t have a clue how the plot was going to link the two together, But I wasn’t disappointed with the outcome/ending.
I really enjoyed this book, it definitely kept me guessing throughout and I think it will be an extremely popular read when it’s released later this year.
Look out for this book coming 15th September 2022!
A very clever storyline. Two stories in tandem for about two thirds of the book that then come together., definitely Kept me guessing for so long & I just couldn’t put it down. Excellent
A road where ghostly going ons happen... the sound of crying... the place four teenagers crashed their car 20 years ago, with only one found. Three missing teenagers, and a reporter determined to shed some light on the mystery.
A thrilling story with a hint of creepiness, which was very enjoyable. I've enjoyed Claire's booka in the past and I definitely enjoyed this one!
Ghostly mystery thrilled with twists and turns - what more could we want?
Claire Douglas books are a real treat and this is no exception. I was intrigued by the mystery of what happened when the girls disappeared and didn't work out the plot in advance at all. Enjoyed the interactions with the journalist and police officer.
Loved, loved, loved this! I have only recently discovered this author after being recommended the couple at no.9. I loved that one so went and bought one of Claires previous novels which I also devoured. I read the girls who disappeared in 2 days, I could not put it down. Full of suspense and kept me guessing til the end, this is definitely my favourite so far. Now to go and stock up on all Claire's previous titles.
I thought this book started so strongly and I was really enjoying it but around two thirds of the way through I was beginning to want it to end. I read in the authors notes at the end of the book that the book undertook a big edit but in my opinion it was still fifty pages too long A shame really because it was going so well.
Twenty years ago three girls disappeared without trace following a car crash while the other girl in the group, Olivia survived. Now journalist Jenna Halliday is making a podcast to make people aware of this twenty year old mystery. The problem Jenna faces is that there are plenty of locals who would rather she wasn’t there, Olivia in particular. Its not long before Jenna starts to receive threatening notes from someone who wants her to leave the town.
There are lots of positives in this book, decent characters, intriguing plot but it just failed to hold my attention throughout.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Michael Joseph UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is another very well written psychological thriller from Claire Douglas which I read quickly and kept me guessing till the very end. Twenty years ago 18 year old Olivia Rutherford was driving her three friends home from a night clubbing when she was forced to swerve on seeing someone on the road. She blacks out and on waking finds that her three friends are no longer in the car. In the present day Jenna Halliday, a reporter, arrives in Olivia's home town to make a podcast about the event as the three girls were never seen again. There are many theories (runaways, alien abduction, murder) but no-one knows the truth. The contemporary story is narrated by Jenna with flashbacks to the night of the crash. However there is another narrative threaded through the story set in Thailand and it is not at all clear when this occurred, who the characters are and what it has to do with the main plot. The author manages to keep all these plot lines going and the reader never knows who to trust or believe. The Wiltshire setting is very well described and the main characters' (Olivia and Jenna)concerns and conflicts are convincingly written. Recommended for fans of psychological thrillers. My thanks to the publisher via Net Galley for a complimentary ARC of this title in return for an honest review.
I was very excited to receive an ARC of this new novel by the super talented Ms Douglas, having read and very much enjoyed all her previous ones. The storyline started off and developed so well and offered huge promise. Sadly, the complexity of the plot began to unravel for me midway through and at the same point also began to lack credibility, to the point of losing my interest and almost giving up. A bit of a disappointment after the quality of her previous novels unfortunately. An OK read but by no means stand out for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for approving me for this arc
I really enjoyed this, in some parts it was still a little bit slower and not as fast paced as her first novel but I loved the twists and turns this novel held! And it done it so well!
The overall plot was fabulous and I loved how the past was brought into the narrative so eloquently!
I loved this story it gripped me from the first page. Mysterious goings on in Wiltshire, a mystery spanning 20 years. What happened to Olivia's friends that night? Douglas creates a sense of suspense and malice will Jenna be able to uncover the mystery and just who can they trust in their quest to find the truth.
Four young women go out for a fun night. They visit a nightclub in a nearby town, but on the way back home they are involved in an accident. When the car is discovered, only the driver, Olivia, is in the car, her three passengers have disappeared. As Olivia is badly hurt, floating in and out of consciousness, she has no idea of what has happened to her three friends.
Twenty years later, on the anniversary of the accident, Jenna, a journalist from Manchester, has been assigned to undertake a podcast about the mystery.
This story is set over two timelines and what appears to be two stories. How they are brought together is very good, and ties things up nicely.
I really enjoyed the fast pace of this book, and thought the plot very good. Unfortunately the denouement was a bit of a disappointment, and a little far fetched with the actions some characters took. A plainer, more straightforward ending would have worked better. Having said that, I did enjoy the book and would definitely recommend.
Thank you NetGalley.
3.5* upped to 4*
I loved, loved, loved this book. After reading The Couple at No. 9, I wasn’t sure that Claire’s writing could get any better, but I was wrong.
The atmospheric setting was totally on point, the characterisation was strong and the plot unfolded at a perfect pace. The use of description was key in creating the strong imagery and sense of place, and the way that the mystery unfolded was done very well.
It was dark, but not too dark, and had a wholly satisfying conclusion.
With thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
A true page-turner, Claire Douglas’ novel, The Girls Who Disappeared, is a twisty mystery thriller in which ‘everyone is lying’ and you can’t trust anyone. The question of the girls’ disappearance remains shrouded in supernatural mystery for 20 years until an inquisitive journalist unwittingly sheds light on what had hoped to remain buried, exposing secrets of a criminal underworld at play. However, there remains the mystery of the cause of the accident which perhaps will never be solved.
This is classic Claire Douglas: mysterious, well-plotted, exceptionally easy to read. I flew through this in only a few hours and Douglas' writing kept me turning the pages into the early hours. Douglas always keeps me guessing and trying to piece the clues together, and this was no exception.
The characters and setting here are what I've come to expect from a Claire Douglas novel: a cosy British village setting, with unsettling undertones and mysterious figures with shadowy pasts.
For me, as a lover of Douglas' previous novels, I must admit that this wasn't my favourite. The plot here was a bit far-fetched, in particular the supernatural element, which seemed unnecessary and took the novel away from the classic mystery puzzle that Douglas excels at: the girls' disappearance, which is the heart of this story.
Overall, this is another really enjoyable read from one of our most reliably enjoyable and thrilling writers.
A great fantastic mystery. Read this and enjoy. Highly reccomend for fans of the genre. I read this in one sitting and it did not dissapoint.
A good story and well-written. I read this in one sitting as I found it hard to put down. The characters were a bit cliched, however, so I have only given four stars, but it is still a good read.
Another corker from Claire Douglas. Shes fast becoming the author I will look out for when it comes to her books. She's a great "twisty" plot author and every book i've read of hers has either shocked me to the core or left me shouting out loud. This book was no exception!
I've read practically all of Claire Douglas's books now and I think i'm starting to work out how she thinks! I feel like a true detective reading her books. I keep on turning those pages collecting those clues. Fantastic.
This book had a range of characters and it was quite thrilling trying to work out how they fit together. I did guess early on who one of the plot twist characters were but it didnt take away from the story, It just made it even better when it came to revealing how and why the story ended up the way it did. I thought this was a fantastic story. I loved how it fitted together and I thought it was quite dark in places which I loved. I really liked Jennas charcater. I found her quite strong and determined and I love fiction with strong female leads. Shout out to Madame Tovey also! Very small part but I loved the supernatural spin she put on things.
Thanks for another great book.
Had me totally engrossed from the first page. Claire Douglas never fails
After an accident 20 years ago a journalist tries to find out what happened and doing a podcast.
Brilliantly written, strong storyline and great characters, what more do you need.
This is the book to curl up with as the nights get colder! This is the book for Autumn.
Thank you NetGalley
This was everything you need for a thriller and crime story. It is not as black and white as you first think and like most typical thrillers, is full of twists. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
3.5/5.
