We first met Raven in book 1 where the main characters were all introduced. After a disrupted and abusive childhood, Raven’s adopted father One-Eye saved her from the streets and has taught her an impressive array of skills. The only others close to her are his son Damon and her husband Aiden, also a mercenary who is away much of the time but always comes home. Raven does legal work for the police, catching fugitives from custody. She also undertakes some very illegal work as an assassin for hire utilizing the amazing arsenal of weapons One-Eye devises.
One-Eye (Nick) has been injured fleeing an attacker on the Isle of Skye and is taken by a kind young couple first to hospital and then to the woman’s parents’ B&B to recuperate, faking amnesia in order to lie low. Since he fired off an emergency alert to his daughter before being rescued, it’s not long before Raven and Damon are soon hotfooting it up to Scotland on his trail, following a number of broken hearts along the way. Unfortunately One-Eye’s attacker and old nemesis Silas is still stalking him and after his blood. Soon Raven’s husband Aiden joins the rescue party, and old friends Luke and the rather scary Saskia meet up with One-Eye. When both groups are finally reunited in the hunt for Silas and his men, sparks soon fly. Throw into the mix two murders where the finger of suspicion points firmly at the outsiders and the result is a fast moving and often humorous story which flowed beautifully and kept my keen attention from start to finish. I listened to the audiobook and it worked really well with a great narrator. I very much enjoyed this second outing for Raven and her family and definitely hope there will be more. 5*
A good second novel on the Raven series. Love the interaction between the main characters, well plotted with plenty of action.
Anne Cartwright yet again does an excellent job narrating the book.
I received this audiobook from W F Howes and Netgalley for a review.
This was an excellent follow up to Raven. One Eye goes out on an adventure and finds more than he was looking for with Raven, Damon, and even Aiden coming to his rescue along with a host of other characters that made this book a lot of fun to listen to. There were just enough crumbs left along the way that I'm definitely hoping for more books in the series!!
Having listened to and thoroughly enjoyed the first in the series, Raven, I was intrigued to see what further escapades the assassin/bounty hunter was going to get mixed up in.
Now Raven was good but Journeyman is better!
Damien, Raven's brother, receives a coded message from their father One-Eye (aka Nik) that means he is in trouble. Unable to contact him and with only a vague idea of where he was going, they set out to try and track him down somewhere in Scotland.
One-Eye is being tracked by a killer from his past who he thought was dead. He is injured and has to 'hide out' in a small Scottish village on the Isle of Skye. Whilst recovering, One-Eye is getting to know the eclectic residents of the village when one of them is found murdered but who did it and why?
With good, strong characters, loads of action, a great and unexpected twist and quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, this was a really enjoyable listen and I look forward to the next in the series.
The narrator does a great job with all the different characters; she really had her work cut out with this one and did it well.
Thank you to W.F. Howes Ltd and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to Journeyman and share my thoughts.
Journeyman is the sequel to the Raven and all the old characters are back, Raven takes more of a back seat in this one and it focuses on Nick (One Eye) Ravens adopted father who has an accident in Scotland whilst being chased by someone he thought was dead. Soon the body count is rising and Raven & her brother Damon have to try and find him before it’s too late.
Heather Atkinson does a great job of combining a good thriller with some humour to make it an enjoyable read/listen and as before it is superbly narrated by Annie Cartwright who really bring the story to life.
On a positive note, Journeyman is much better than book 1 in the series and can be read as a standalone. The story has a murder mystery element running alongside a manhunt vendetta and is pretty fast paced. Pleasingly, this book doesn't have the glaring inconsistencies of the first book - although I did spot a few anomalies - eg, the Police questioning One Eye (with feigned amnesia) who says he has never attacked any women in the past: The police don't pick up on this obvious indication he has memory of previous relationships, but as part of the subsequent dialogue actually refer to his amnesia! This book is readable - it's not perfect, but it is a huge improvement on book 1. Many thanks to NetGallery and W.F. Howes Ltd for allowing me to get a copy of the audio book.
This the first Heather Atkinson book I’ve read and it won’t be the last. (I found out there is a first book in the series Raven, which I’m going off to find.) First let me say I enjoyed the story, partly but not exclusively for its setting in Scotland. This is a gritty book; while the characters are engaging, most are horrible people. Murder and mayhem are found hiding in and around a quiet Skye village. If that is your type of book, you’ll really enjoy this action packed search for a Dad and a murderer. After calling his children for help One Eye disappears. Raven, his very capable daughter, sets off with her brother to find him. The story has plenty of twists, nicely written characters, and dash of humour thrown in. Annie Cartwright, the narrator, has the perfect timbre of voice to make this book come alive. Thank you to W F Howes, Whole Story Quest Audio Books and Net Galley for letting me listen to an audio ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Raven is back in the second instalment of the Raven Series. Our favorite assassin takes us on journey where she and Damian race against time to find her adoptive father One Eye who is tracking his own kill but finds a bit of trouble along the way. He hides out in a small village and meet some very peculiar people.
Action packed and full paced. Another great book from Heather! The characters are so thoughtfully crafted and unique. I also liked how this story mainly focused on One Eye, but still got to see your favorite characters in their own capacity.
Thank you once again Netgalley and W.F. Howes Ltd for this ARC.
