Very atmospheric with a good dose of suspense. I enjoyed the first book and loved the way the characters continue into this story. It's an interesting blend of genres that just works. I hope we see more Slayton.

Creepy book. Really well done on atmosphere. The Night Whispers is a strange combination of supernatural horror, mystery, and police procedural but it works. It also is book 2 in a series. I have not read book 1 and probably would have enjoyed The Night Whispers more if I had. Having said that, I had no real problem following the plot.

Sarah is a rookie police officer in the English village of Slayton, where ghoulish things happen. There is an urban legend about black-eyed children who visit people right before they die. That does indeed happen to Rosemary and her disabled son, who are hideously murdered after Rosemary lets to strange children in her house. Is this supernatural retribution or is there a human hand at play?. Lots of interesting characters, from Sarah to Elliot (a 7-year-old boy who has the ability to hear from ghosts), to Sarah's friends to her fellow police officers to the handsome traveler. I feel certain there will be a third book.

I loved The Midnight Man. I didn't think I could wait for the second book to come out but I did.
And I loved it! Slayton book two was just the thriller I've been waiting on.
This is a really fantastic book, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Mitchell is an amazing storyteller, she always has strong plots and great writing styles that make you sit on the edge of the seat.
The plot is brilliant and engrossing.
Characters are engaging and well written.
They drew me in and kept me flipping the pages throughout the night.
The suspense builds right to the end.
It really is a nail-biting read.

This is the second thriller in the series set in Slayton, with Detective Sarah Noble.

When a woman and her wheelchair bound, son are found murdered with their eyes removed, it doesn’t take long for a legend of the town to start spreading.

The Legend of the children with black eyes that appear after hearing chilling whispers. If they follow you home don’t let them in.

The town is in shock and terrified about who could be next.

Detective Sarah Noble after her triumph on her last case in the town is brought on to the case, with her knowledge and closeness to the community she is an important member of the team.

Will they find the murderer? Is the legend of the black-eyed children true?

This thriller is chilling right from the start, and this is what I have loved about this series so far is the paranormal element along with the murder investigations.

I really like Sarah’s character and she really does care about her cases, the town of Slayton and the people who live there.

I also like that Elliott also returned as part of the storyline, as he seems such a sweet child with an amazing but terrifying gift.

Overall, a chilling thriller with the legend of the children with black eyes terrorising the town of Slayton.

I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.

The second in a series and it is, for once, one where I think it would have been better to read the first. There are quite a few references to previous events but that are not explained enough to a new reader. These relate in particular to the main female detective, Sarah. I just can't make her out, she's a mature age but seems rather naïve so I wonder how she's retained that in the police force. Some rather gruesome murders are prefaced by "visitors" - ghostly black eyed children. Who they are/were gradually becomes apparent and all linked to a travelling family returning to the village on the anniversary of a tragedy in their lives. The story is set during Covid times, I think, given the mentions of hand sanitising and so on, but there's little effort in showing how routine police activities, or life, were being affected by the restrictions. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Embla Books, for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Night Whispers is the 2nd book in the Slayton Thriller series by Caroline Mitchell.
We return to the town of Slayton where creepy things have been going on for the last twenty years.
An old lady and her disabled Son are visited on evening by two children, The next day, the woman and her son are found dead with their eyes gouged out and blood everywhere. Detective Sarah Noble finds the pair. Death seems to follow her everywhere. When rumours spread the town wonders who are the Black-eyed children and who would kill the woman and her son?
A family of travellers have returned to Slayton as it is the anniversary of the disappearance two traveller children who has never been found. The family still want answers. Are they still alive or are they dead? The family need answers so they can lay them to rest and get on with their lies. But the people of Slayton don’t want them there and have they got anything to do with the killings in the town?
Thank you, Embala books for a copy of ‘The Night whispers. This is another spooky spine-tingling tale from the author. With the same likeable characters from the first book. I really enjoyed this and find this very different from the other series she has written (in a good way). I can’t wait for the next book to see how it develops. Especially Sarah, will she be trusted again in her team and get the recognition that she deserves? I will just have to wait and see. 5 stars from me.

Iove this authors work but I found that I had trouble with the formatting of this document. It didn't really go over well to my kindle which made it harder to read.

Elliot just wants to be a normal little boy. He doesn't want to be woken by strange voices that whisper to him and manifest into two children, a girl and a boy who have pale skin and black eyes, their presence makes his bedroom freezing cold and it leaves him in a state of fright and disbelief. Elliot isn't the only one in the village to get a visit from the children. they also visit Rosemary and her disabled son Geoffrey. who are left brutally murdered and disfigured but surely two children couldn't have committed such an odious crime. This is just the start of a brilliant multi-faceted story, it would make a spine-chilling drama to watch on Halloween. I haven't read such a spooky terrifying book since reading James Herbert.

***

I did not read the first book of this series. So, I wasn't familiar with the main character.

That being said, I don't think I missed too much as I was able to follow along just fine. So, I would say this could be read as a stand alone if you like.

This town is creepy and I sort of loved it! I'm not sure I'd call this a horror book, per say. But, there are certainly darker elements. Creepy children are always, well, creepy.

That being said, I thought the pacing was solid and the action was thrilling. Mitchell is great with atmosphere and environment. The town really comes to life.

Another Slayton thriller has landed in my inbox and goes straight to the top of my reading pile. After reading The Midnight Man a creepy fantastic five star read, I could not wait to start reading The next in this gripping and very addictive series. From chapter one the reader is grabbed by the throat and does not let go until the very last page. Gruesome murders, whispers in the night and Slayton is living in fear again!!!! Who are the two ghostly children with black eyes?? This is only the beginning. A creepy chilling thriller that kept me reading late into the night. In my opinion one of my favourite authors has another hit series on her hands and I can't wait to read more from this very talented author.

This is the second book of the Slayton thriller series. A mother and son were found dead with their eyes gouged out. Prior to their death, the mother had called someone about their being two children in the house. Rumours spread around the town about the black-eyed children.

There is a lot going on in this book! So many different characters I did have to flit back and forth a bit so I didn’t get them muddled up. It all ties together so well towards the end. Like the first book, there are still paranormal visions and the story is very spooky!

*spoiler alert*

I finished the book wanting more and I cannot wait for the next book to be released. Sarah accepts an offer on Blackhall Manor from twins. It isn’t explored much in this book but I really hope it features more in the next book as I bet the twins will be creepy as hell!

Caroline Mitchell's The Night Whispers is the second book of the Slayton Thriller Series. This spine-chilling read is the perfect concoction of mystery, supernatural, moody and dark. It always begins with whispers in the dark, black-eyed children slowly making their way with a knock on the door, asking to come in. Slayton is a town buried deep in secrets, deception, promises and betrayal. The first chapter is the ultimate hook that grips you in. Caroline Mitchell has developed well-rounded characters who propel this unique plot forward. The twists and turns are simply incredible, shocking and will leave you incredulous. The ending where all elements tie in together is memorable and satisfying. A 5-star read! I will recommend this book and keep an eye out for Caroline Mitchell's work.

When two children knock at the door of an elderly lady and her disabled son, the town of Slayton are shocked when they are found murdered. Who are the black-eyed children appearing before death comes calling?

We meet up with Detective Sarah Noble again in this second book in the series. It was lovely to see some of the characters back again, especially Elliot and Elsie.

The start of this book chilled me to the bone, it was so creepy and tense. A clever storyline that left you guessing and I didn’t have a clue who the killer was.

My thanks to Embla Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

2.5 stars rounded up.

This was supposed to be creepy with supernatural elements - ghostly, black eyed children and whispers in the night! The children appeared at the door of the elderly Rosemary and her wheelchair bound son, Geoffrey, one night pitifully asking for help. Rosemary had the presence of mind to ring a neighbour about them while in the kitchen making them a hot chocolate drink. But, when the neighbour hears nothing further and the police call around, they find the two of them brutally stabbed to death and their eyes removed.

This really sets tongues wagging in Slayton and soon black eyed children are appearing everywhere. It soon becomes apparent that the children are the ghosts of 12 year old Mercy and her 6 year old brother, Mickey, who disappeared 25 years ago. They have not been able to rest because those involved with their deaths have not faced justice yet. There is, of course, more death to come.

DC Sarah Noble is attached to the Major Incident Team investigating these deaths as she is from Slayton and knows a lot of the locals.

I knew this was a book 2 before getting into it and I thought maybe I haven’t missed too much but now, in hindsight, I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the first book. There are many references to a previous case and there is not enough background given in this one to put everything into context.

The main protagonist, Sarah, is around 40 years old but comes across as much younger and inexperienced and lacking confidence. I didn’t like her much, she seemed so weak! I also did not find the book at all creepy, in fact the supernatural elements seemed to be pretty lame, juvenile even! They just didn’t work for me. I like a lot of Caroline Mitchell’s crime thrillers but this was not a thriller by any stretch of the imagination. Which is a pity as she is an excellent writer. Unfortunately I can only give 2.5 stars rounded up - because it is Caroline Mitchell. Many thanks to Netgalley and Embla Books for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

I’m not sure that I read the same book as everyone else? I’m sad to say that I found this book neither creepy or thrilling.

Having missed my opportunity to read Midnight Man, it was apparent right from the start of this book that I was ‘not part of the club’. With so many off-hand references to the previous book it was clear to me that in order to fully understand the characters and feel involved I needed to have read the first book.

Overall I found the plot extremely linear. For me, it felt a little too far fetched and more supernatural than crime fiction. The characters felt disjointed and I struggled to relate to them and understand the relationships between them.

This is another book that has been set in ‘covid’ times. It’s almost become a trend with authors to do this. Whether it’s to create a dystopian scenario or simple to ‘date’ their novel. In this book, however, random covid elements are simply flung into the narrative for no apparent reason. Ie: She sanitised her hands before placing the grapes down on the table’, she wore a face mask at the crime scene (but nowhere else), she didn’t shake hands with the lawyer - I don’t see how any of that contributed to the story, certainly for me I found it created road bumps in the narrative.

I’m so sad that I can’t rate this book more highly. I was so thrilled to have received a copy but now I feel I need to read Midnight Man just to give this one more stars.

The town of Slayton is creepy AF! I would never want to live there.

This is book #2 in the Slayton Thriller series, and this time around, the townspeople are terrified of the rumors regarding black-eyed children who show up on residential doorsteps and kill the occupants. Detective Sarah Noble is on the case again, and she can only agree that whatever is going on is morbid…but normal for the town.

As the death count rises and things get stranger, the whispers heard at night get louder. Nobody in town is safe…especially if they open their front door.

This is such an atmospheric read that would be perfect for Fall/Halloween. While I wasn’t scared per se, I did find many moments creepy. This is a moody, dark thriller that oozes with tension and compelling characters.

I also enjoyed the first book in the series, The Midnight Man, but the ending of that one didn’t do it for me. This was an improvement from start to end, and I’m definitely looking forward to more of Sarah and her macabre little town.

Thank you to Embla Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Expected Publication Date: 7/28/22.
