This is the first in this series by Tracy Whitwell and I’m definitely going to read the rest! This was a quick read for me, in the best way, as it was so easy to just sink into this book and keep reading! I really enjoyed the idea of Tanz tapping into her skill and possibly finding a new avenue in her life, unexpectedly and all that that entails. There were some very funny moments throughout, along with some truly heart-wrenching bits. This book feels a bit like a hidden gem, and I’m looking forward to reading the next.
Absolutely loved this book!
The writing style was really good and I look forward to reading any other books from this author in the future :)
I absolutely loved this book. I really enjoy mediums and anything to do with that and to read a murder mystery around that plot was genius
My review:
The Accidental Medium by Tracy Whitwell is a murder mystery with a supernatural twist as Tanz realises that she really can hear voices of the dead.
I enjoyed this take on a supernatural mystery. It has a touch of horror in places, and some danger.
It's a good start to what can be a series of cosy supernatural mysteries, and I'm looking forward to reading more!
The Accidental Medium was published on 21st July 2022, and is available from Amazon, Waterstones and Bookshop.org.

I was given this book in exchange for an unbiased review, so my thanks to NetGalley and to Pan Macmillan.
A really enjoyable funny story. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review.
The Accidental Medium is about Tanz and 30 something struggling actress from Newcastle who finds herself having to get a normal job in a New Age shop to make ends meet and this changes her life as she knows it as she unlocks a family gift for the other. She sees dead people! This was a lot of fun. I liked Tanz and her straight talking Geordieness, her friends and family are lovely but I do worry about them drinking too much. As far as plot goes it doesn’t hang about once she gets her new powers Tanz is a natural and highly gifted, she’s a mid thirties wunderkind and is settling ghosts left right and centre. It’s a bit episodic in nature and there’s no real overarching plot but it moves so quickly it wasn’t a problem. I’d happily read more about Tanz and her ghosts.
It's always refreshing to read a book that makes you laugh and one in which you wish you could grab a glass of wine with the main character and hear all about their exploits. The Accidental Medium is exactly that book.
The story revolves around Tanz, who's mostly failing to get work in the acting business, so she takes a job working the till at the Mystery Pot, a shop that sells crystals and similar ephemera and specialises in readings by two Mediums - Sheila and Martin. However, Tanz suddenly discovers that she, too, has some psychic abilities.
Tanz is a loveable character, unsure of what to do with her newfound talent for communicating with the dead. It leads her into all sorts of situations, including some great sex with a young barman called Pat, trying to protect an ageing lothario from being attacked by an obsessive previous lover and finding out what happened to a murdered woman.
I loved this book and was delighted to see that a sequel will be released next year. I can't wait to hear what's next for Tanz and the other characters this opening novel has set up so delightfully.
Thanks to #NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in return for a fair review.
What an enjoyable read! I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel, but I thoroughly loved Tanz. A northern lass, she is a struggling actor scraping by in London and still grieving the loss of her close friend Frank. Tanz needs to find a job to tide her over the gaps between acting jobs, and finds herself working behind the counter in a 'New Age' shop. Pretty soon she is befriended by Sheila, a clairvoyant, who gives readings. Sheila tells her that she definitely has a latent talent, so Tanz decides to try & develop this with Sheila's support.
Very funny, well written characters, with an interesting and spooky story line
This was a fun and enjoyable book that would be perfect for those looking for a lighter read that still maintains paranormal and 'spooky' undertones/elements. The humour throughout was definitely a shining moment for me, and I feel I could definitely recommend this book broadly to a variety of people, who could all find something enjoyable to take away from this story.
(Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review).
All round fabulous read, quirky funny and can’t help but make you laugh. Only disappointment is how quickly I reached the end - I do hope there will be more!
I really enjoyed this book and how fast paced it was.
Tanz is a really relatable character, an actress who is struggling to find work, whilst living in London. To get life more on track and to ensure that bills can be paid, she starts working in a 'Witchy' shop where they have in house mediums.
She has always been really good at predicting things that are going to happen, but soon she starts being able to converse with the dead.
The plot was great, I loved how Tanz and Sheila worked so well together, they really kept me wanting to read more. I would happily read more of their adventures together.
I would highly recommend this for anyone that really enjoys, paranormal adventures.
This was completely different to anything I have read recently, if not ever, making it exceptionally fun and refreshing! I 100% think everyone will adore this book, especially in October time for Halloween, so will be recommending that all my bookish friends grab their own copy! The humour, friendship and laugh-out-loud moments really had me wishing it would never end. As for Tanz, I loved how she was written and if like me, you consume enough British comedy, you can't help but praise the way the author has gone on to describe her and the way she acts. All round, an absolutely brilliant read!
Really enjoyed this one. We follow Tanz, a woman who has been hearing and feeling things her entire life, she gets a job working at the mystery pot where she meets and befriends a psychic called Sheila. Sheila tells Tanz that the feelings and voices she hears are actually spirits trying to communicate so they can cross over and move on. This novel was fun, intriguing and even had a murder to solve. I highly recommend. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC.
A wonderfully quirky story. Featuring Tanz, a middle-aged fading actress who takes a till job in a "clairvoyant" shop to fund her lifestyle.
It is witty and lighthearted. The murder aspect takes a while to appear but the flow of the story meant that I was enjoying the tale just too much to care.
An easy read that is perfect as a wind-down,
Tanz is an actress whose roles are few & far between. In order to fund her cocktail habit she gets a part-time job in a shop that sells crystals, tarot cards & offers clairvoyant appointments. It is not long before she finds herself knowing things she shouldn't know & Sheila, one of the readers tells her she definitely has talent. In a lightning trip back to Gateshead she finds out there is a long history of mediums in her family. Tanz decides to see where this is going to lead- little realising how it is going to change her life.
I absolutely loved this book! Tanz's collection of friends were varied & engaging & the writing style made for an easy read, even though it was spooky at times. I really hope there will be more adventures of Sheila & Tanz. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book
The Accidental Medium is the first book in a hilarious series from Tracy Whitwell featuring Tanz, the accidental medium who, with the help of the dead, is about to become an unwilling crime-solver. Beautifully written and I got really invested in the story. I would highly recommend reading this one. A clever, engrossing story with fabulous characters!
My thanks to Pan Macmillan for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Accidental Medium’ by Tracy Whitwell.
This is the opening book in a new series of mysteries featuring Tanz, a once-successful TV actress from Gateshead living in London.
Now in her late thirties her acting career has pretty much stalled. Since the death of her friend, Frank, in a car accident three years ago she has been missing him and carrying on conversations with him in her head. She also has vivid dreams.
When she takes a job in a New Age shop Tanz suddenly finds that she is getting messages from beyond the grave and Frank begins to serve as her spirit guide. Talking to her mam it turns out that she comes from a long line of psychic mediums. A new life beckons as she explores her newly discovered gifts, though this being a mystery series there is also danger lurking.
I found ‘The Accidental Medium’ a great deal of fun. Tanz serves as the novel’s narrator and is very much a Geordie lass. I loved her down-to-Earth attitude. The chapter titles were also amusing and set the tone for this light-hearted romp.
I am looking forward to reading more of Tanz’s spooky adventures in the future.
I had a lot of fun in reading this book and loved Tanz. There's a lot of humour, friendship, ghosts.
It was an entertaining and compelling read that kept me hooked. It's a good mix of chick lit/paranormal/mystery and I can't wait to read the next story.
One note: if you want a classic cozy mystery there's some strong language and sex.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Tanz is a wine-loving, straight-talking, once-successful TV actress from Gateshead, whose career has shrivelled like an antique walnut. When she starts work in a ‘new age’ shop, Tanz suddenly discovers that the voices she’s hearing in her head are real, not the first signs of madness, and that she can give people ‘messages’ from beyond the grave.
I wanted to love this; I really did but I just could not get into it. I felt that the voice of the character was really jarring, and it grated on me so much that I had to stop reading. The initial conversation seemed really superficial to me and was far too much dialogue. I felt it was trying to jam far too much information into such a short piece of work.
Although this novel wasn’t too my taste, it doesn’t mean it won’t suit other peoples.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This was a really interesting unusual and very different read, and I loved it!!
Tanz is an out of work actor, who loves alcohol, she's a geordie from Gateshead through and through, with a fantastic down to earth attitude and sense of humour. This is a crime thriller with a difference with alot of spirits on the side.
Hilarious laugh out loud, fascinating and disturbing at times.....it was brilliant and had me gripped!!
Great writing, great knowledge of the subject and a scary murderer!!!
Really looking forward to Tracy Whitwell 's next book!!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read early, loved it!!!
