This is such a sweet book about a boy who is scared to be the new kid in town, and the girl who can't wait to meet him! I liked the side-by-side pictures to show the different emotions of each child. It had a sweet ending.
What a heart-warming story! The message and illustrations in A New Friend really hit home. I love the dual perspective of both Mae and Joe and think this story would be a great way to teach students about empathy! I also think this story would be useful as a read-aloud to classrooms when new students join in the middle of the year. It would really prepare them and help them realize that maybe the new kid isn't as excited as they are because they have feelings of fear or worry. It also teaches young kids that sometimes being kind takes courage, just like Mae.
I really enjoyed this story and can't wait to purchase a physical copy for my classroom! Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
This short, nicely illustrated children’s book will be welcomed by families that have a child starting at a new school. It is told from two simultaneous viewpoints; there is Mae who wants to welcome the new student and Joe, the new boy, who is feeling insecure. How will they come to meet and become friends ? Read this lovely multicultural story to find out.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto-Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
