I wanted to love this book based on the premise but the writing style was one that I struggled to embrace. Depending on the writing style you prefer it may be the book for you.

This book wasn’t what I had expected. It relies heavily on the dialogue of different characters that live in the same neighborhood as Arthur Baladino, a man who has come home from prison. Let out on compassionate leave so he could die in the comforts of his own home; I was hoping for some great plot twist with Arthur’s character but felt a bit let down.

On the surface, this book is about people living in the same neighborhood as Arthur, reflecting on their lives and what they could have done differently. But what lies beneath is a more thought-provoking novel where each character searches for a connection with another human in hopes of being absolved of their past transgressions.

With interesting prose and unique dialogue, this book was sometimes a heavy read. While I enjoyed the perspectives of each character, I found myself getting lost at times and would have enjoyed the novel more if there had been more focus on Arthur.
