This is a real feel-good book. In some parts it's funny and in others it is quite emotional. What do you do when you find out your Dad is struggling with his sexual ity and decides to leave your Mum? How do you deal with a boyfriend who can sometimes be adorable and the rest of the time behaves like prehistoric man? Read on to discover all this and more. The perfect beach read.
‘Time After Time’ by Louise Pentland is a heartwarming, funny and delightfully insightful story.
Tabby’s life is suddenly upended when her dad makes a surprise announcement over Sunday lunch. She likes to stay well within her comfort zone, but the dominoes begin to fall and there’s nothing she can do to stop them. As she tries to cope with the changes, she wishes she could go back in time, where things were simpler. Meeting Bea begins a voyage of discovery. The only problem is, Bea is in the 1980s, and Tabby has been pushed into the past. So why does everything feel right in 1989? And will her travels in time be the answer to her present day problems?
I loved the time travel element of this novel. As someone who grew up in the 1980s, I revelled in the retro fashion details. I adored the mention of long lost shops. I couldn’t get enough of the tiny day to day differences. I felt I was with Tabby as she discovered the world of big hair, even bigger shoulder pads and mountains of Elnett hair spray.
It was about Tabby discovering what she wanted from life. Wouldn’t we all love the chance to see ourselves from another perspective?
It was a beautiful story of love, self-discovery and hope. I adored it.
I was given this ARC to review.
What would you do if you could go back in time and know what you know now?
Louise Pentland is a fabulous writer and one who always makes you feel like part of the story itself. I love the escapism but also the feeling of ‘yep, I know exactly what you mean!’
If you need a quick fun read then look no further than this amazing lady
I really enjoyed getting stuck into this one and I think this is my most enjoyed Louise Pentland read so far.
You'd think time travel would be a bit cliched but she does it so well that it makes it fully believable and entrancing. I'll be honest, I saw the plot twist coming a mile off but that didn't hamper my reading experience.
Differently one to pick up if you fancy being transformed to another time for some escapism.
I've followed Louise Pentland's vlogging adventures for many years and have read several of her previous books. I was therefore really excited to receive an advance copy of Time After Time, particularly because I was also interested in the premise.
This was a change of theme from the "Wilde" books. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and the sweet nod to Louise's daughters. There was an element of magic and took us back to the past, examining complicated family and romantic relationships and investigating what would happen if we set out on a very different path. I was particularly keen on the nostalgia and finding out what the village was like in the past.
A fun summer read!
Thank you very much to the publisher and NetGalley for a free advance copy of Time After Time in exchange for an honest review.
A light hearted and compelling story featuring a time travel, growing up and finding what you really want.
I liked Tabitha and had fun in reading about the pop references.
The storytelling is excellent and the characters are interesting and fleshed out.
It's the first book i read by this author and won't surely be the last.
There's some repetition but the plot flows..
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I firstly want to thank NetGallery and the publishers for sending me a free digital copy to read for an honest review.
Time After Time is a easy book to slip in and out of when you have a few minutes spare, the characters and storyline make you enjoy opening the book and continue reading & whilst you're away, you're wondering what's going on in Tabby's life - both in 2022 and 1989.
I enjoy a well written Time travel piece and this book is just that, with a huge amount of family secrets thrown in.
Would highly recommend if you enjoy a fun read that will take you on a journey.
Time After Time is about Tabitha (Tabby) who runs a vintage and curiosity shop, Pearls and Doodles, and she travels back in time to the 1980s after finding and putting on a magic ring.
Tabby feels life is uneventful and routine; she has a boring boyfriend, David (he has ham and mustard sandwiches every day in his packed lunch, made with white bread) and she goes for a full Sunday roast at her mum and dad’s every weekend. Her parents call her Tabby Cat and they don't like David.
This was a very nostalgic read for me as I was a teenager in part of the eighties. The characters were well formulated and the overall tone of the writing was fun and fresh. The plotting was good and I found the pacing comfortable as well, with enough going on to hold my interest. Engaging and delightful.
A special thank you to Bonnier Books UK, Zaffre, Louise Pentland, NetGalley and Pigeonhole for the opportunity to read. This review is my unbiased opinion.
Fantastic escapism with a clever twist. A feel good novel which touches on important topics. A thoroughly enjoyable read and as a resident I was rather impressed with how Swindon was fictionalised into somewhere people would want to go!
I could not get into this book about a woman called Tabby who gets transported back to the 1980's.
Not my sort of book.
Thanks to NetGalley & Bonnier Books for a advanced copy.
I love to read most genres but my absolute favourite is time travel so when I saw the premise for this novel, I just had to read it.
I adored Tabitha she is warm, relatable and at times feisty even although she's unsure of her place in the world. Her relationship with Bea is funny and genuine. The setting of the eighties is brilliant and I loved reading all about the fashion and makeup - it really took me back to that era. I just loved the idea of being able to go back and reinventing myself.
But this book isn't just a light read because it deals with important themes like loss, toxic relationships and finding your own happiness. But it does so with genuine warmth, humour and a sparkle of magic. It truly is a feel good emotional rollercoaster and I particularly loved her relationship with her mother.
As for the time travel itself, I thoroughly enjoyed how this worked in the book and the concept of a ring in her vintage shop being the route to her adventures. It never felt intrusive or detracted from Tabitha's story.
Beautifully written and with characters that feel authentic and real, this is a wonderful and uplifting read. Perfect for fans of Marian Keyes and Cecilia Ahern
I am new to Louise’s books and wasn’t sure what to expect. At first I found some of sentences hard but got used to the writing.
The time travel wasn’t too OTT which was good as I don’t read fantasy books.
I had guess who characters were early on but I think you are supposed. I really enjoyed this and will definitely read another book by Pentland.
Many thanks to Netgalley for this ARC
As a mum of two daughters I know Louise Pentland as Sprinkle of Glitter, uk blogger/vlogger. I was aware she had written novels but Time After Time is the first that I have read so I wasn’t sure what to expect!
Tabitha’s cosy life is shattered when her dad makes a huge announcement over Sunday dinner. She is forced out of her comfort zone and has to learn to adapt to her mum and dad living separately and learning to be new versions of themselves as well as juggling her career and love life. Tabitha is a young woman who doesn’t have big dreams; she runs an antique shop owned by someone else while upcycling/restoring clothes, furniture and jewellery. This side line is pretty successful and she is building up a pretty substantial nest egg. She is in a relationship with David who we know isn’t right for her, she keeps her profits a secret from him and has no faith in her own talent. David sees her projects as clutter and seems intent on keeping Tabitha small and contained in a life he wants.
A magic ring gives Tabitha the chance to time travel to 1989 where she befriends fun-loving, adventurous Bea. This friendship gives her the confidence to grow and accept the changes in her life. Bea is a great giver of advice to Tabitha and always knows the right thing to say.
I really enjoyed this book although it made me feel a bit vintage myself as I was 11 in 1989! I loved the retro vibe and the fashion/music references. Time After Time is a story about acceptance, family and friendship. It’s a really sweet story that hit me right in the feels!
Highly recommend. 4 stars.
Tabitha thought she was living a normal, comfortable life (well, maybe she was a little stuck in a rut) until a earth-shattering family dinner. Oh wait, as well as trying on a ring that transports her back to 1989.
Sounds a little mad, right? Well, it is! Time After Time is a web of family and relationship drama, time travel and mysteries. The writing style is very fluffy and chatty, which does really help bring the character of Tabitha to life, but also meant a lot of skim reading for me as she nattered on about Instagram.
As a reader, you're always a few steps ahead of Tabitha in terms of knowing where the story is going, which is sometimes frustrating as it paints Tabitha as lovely and sweet, but also a bit of a dummy at times. That aside, my favourite part of this book is the friendships and bonds between the female characters in the book - they felt incredibly real and vulnerable.
3 stars because I felt like elements of the plot could have been better executed (like the time travel), but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Thanks to Net Galley and Bonnier Books for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
A fun enjoyable read. I really loved the 80’s flashbacks. Yes I can remember people smoking in night clubs and coming home stinking of smoke lol would love to read a sequel
Having read wilde girls, I'd hoped after a few more books, I might enjoy Louise's books more, as I really, really want to - she seems like a lovely person. Unfortunately, while this is an easy read, it's an easy read in that everything is too 'on the nose'. Tabitha essentially thinks things unnecessarily and honestly, she's so, so annoyingly oblivious throughout. I really needed to see why she was with her partner for so long, as right at the beginning you see issues. This was a decent plot, but the execution could have been improved.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Tabitha has an uneventful life. She has a boyfriend who she sees herself getting married to, her loving parents and a job she adores in a vintage knick-knack and clothing shop. That is until one Sunday lunch, when her dad drops a bombshell. It's fair to say pudding was forgotten at that point.
Whilst mulling over her dad's news and aborting through some new jewellery stock for the shop, she finds an amethyst ring which somehow manages to transport her back in time to 1989 and before she was even born when worn. Gaining the courage to explore she befriends free spirit Bea and they immediately strike a friendship up.
Tabitha begins to reassess her life after her dad's news and having met go-getter Bea. Is everything as wonderful as she first thought, or is she just settled and not pushing herself? Will she start making changes to help love her best life?
Tabitha was a breath of fresh air as a character. One who I felt I could relate to. I think we've all doubted our monotonous routines and wondered if there was more out there for us, if only we could grab it. I particularly loved her love for vintage quirky paraphernalia and really appreciated the nod to her instagram page and side hustle. The time travel between the present and 1989 felt seamless and true to that era.
Time After Time, definitely gave me Back to the Future vibes, although it was a ring rather than a DeLorean which assisted with the time travel. Whilst I did guess the twist, it didn't spoil the plot at all and I finished the book with a smile.
Great if you love a bit of time travel, the 80s and a feel good read!
Really enjoyable book, some bits become quite clear early on but there are still some surprises waiting in the wings to jump out at you!
This is the story of Tabitha, whose world is rocked by her parents admitting some gaping holes in the life she holds dear. The novel has time travel, romance, friction and much more. There is a lot of descriptive language around the clothes and accessories from both eras, perhaps a little too much in parts. And puffball skirts were no longer in fashion in 1989, I’m fairly sure of that.
I think I may have been a reader of the wrong age group to enjoy this book fully, I think the target market is more 20/30 somethings so although I remember the 80’s well, there was a lot that didn’t really resonate from that period. Early 80’s perhaps, but not late.
It’s an easy read, with a likeable main character and I enjoyed the ending.
Only 3 stars as although readable, not really my cup of tea.
This is the story of Tabitha. She lives a comfy life with her boyfriend David and her routine includes visits to her parents at the weekend for a roast dinner. Tabitha works in a shop that sells vintage items and her hobby is refurbishing pre-loved items, which she sells on. One Sunday Tabitha goes for lunch at her parent's house as usual, only to be thrown a massive curve ball just before the spotted dick is served. Life will never be the same again.
Without spoiling the story, I'll just say that something wonderful also happens to Tabitha at work, which takes her back to the 1980's.
I loved this book. I was able to guess most of the plot twists slightly in advance, but that was fine.
The descriptions of life, both current and from the 80's, are strong and evocative. That hostess trolley, perms, discos, etc! Great characters and this would transfer brilliantly to TV.
