Full of twists, turns, alcohol and sunshine, this thriller audiobook kept my anxieties high as I listened. Told in turn, from each character’s viewpoint, it didn’t take me long to work out who was who, and their relationship to Lexi, the bride-to-be on her hen weekend in Greece. We all knew someone would die. What I didn’t work out, though, was who that was going to be and what was going to happen. That came as a complete surprise. All six women had their secrets and, of course, during the trip, all the secrets were going to come out, one way or another.
Lucy writes with intrigue, and suspense and I adored listening to this. A Greek island, female friendships (or not), sunshine, good food and alcohol. What’s not to love?
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review a copy of One of the Girls by Lucy Clarke.
Tolles Hörbuch mit tollen Sprecherinnen. Eine super spannende Geschichte mit vielen Twists und einem tollen Setting. Der Schreibstil war klar und einfach. Super auch für den Sommer!
At the beginning of the book we are told of a murder. Depicted in the prologue is a scene in which a body bag is being zipped up. Cut to the first chapter and we are introduced to Lexi and her "BFF" Bella. Bella is the one organising the hen on a remote paradise Island in Greece. Lots of Sun, Sea and Sangria before the big day.
As the story moves along at a steady pace, we learn that each woman has their own motive and emotional baggage for attending the trip. As we, the reader know there's been a murder you can't help but watch every move the women are making to look out for signs that skulduggery is afoot.
Lucy Clarke is a very clever author in that she hooks us in and we are left guessing in suspense until the very end.
I loved the fact that their was multiple pov from each of the six characters and we got a fleeting insight in to their lives.
I thoroughly enjoyed One of the Girls and listened to the audiobook and read the eBook intermittently. The narrators were clear and easy to follow and fit the story very well. Since reading One of the Girls, I have also read the The Hike by this author and loved it just as much.
Really enjoyed this audio book. This story held my attention and I ended up finishing it in two days. I loved the way the story unfolded and I found the characters relatable.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Lucy Clarke for the advanced copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily
Listened to this on holiday in Greece, the perfect setting as it made it easier to imagine the scenes, enjoyed the twists and turns and also the narrator. Defo someone I would read again
I am a big fan of Castaways by Lucy Clarke so I was excited to get the opportunity to listen to this one. I did really enjoyed this book and it had some great twists and turns to keep you hooked. But... I do feel it fell a little short at the end. Thanks to Netgalley for my Advanced copy
This audiobook had me hooked the whole way through! I had about ten different theories chopping and changing and I still didn’t get the outcome right!
The characters were all written so well, I really felt the emotions of each of them. And the narration was great and easy to follow.
I love a thriller and this was a classic one. There was t anything overly amazing about it but it kept me engaged and interested throughout . The narration was also really well done.
Not sure about this, the long and complicated story line with numerous characters made it difficult to follow and get into .
Great thriller read. Loved the writing style from this author. Really hooked me in from the start and needed to know more and more.
I love Lucy Clarke! The Castaways was a stand out novel for me, and One of the Girls was no different. She excels in writing dreamy settings juxtaposed with dark and twisty events.
When I first started listening to the audiobook, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to differentiate all the characters (I even had a note in my phone with all their names and their relation to the bride!), but this wasn’t a problem at all. They each had their own personalities and storylines and earned their place in the novel. Eleanor, Lexi’s fiance’s sister, was a real stand out character to me.
Extra points for lesbian/sapphic representation, which I wasn’t expecting!
I loved this and will definitely be reading more of Lucy Clarke’s books.
I bloody loved Castaways by this author so when I realised that this book was by the same author, I wasn't surprised that I enjoyed this book. I loved the multiple POV although the reason it wasn't a 5* read for me was due to the ending, I felt like it was a bit rushed at the end and would have liked more to the ending but I did enjoy the ending and the story did come with some good twists that I wasn't expecting.
The ending was predictable, with lots of twists and turns but a well read audiobook which I absolutely loved!
This started slowly, and I wasn’t sure about it at first, but it picked up just over half way through. I would say it’s a girly story, aimed I would assume at women.
There were a lot of shocking moments, but for me they sort of fell flat.
Narrator was brilliant though which always helps and I did want to finish it to know what happened. Just felt like it took a while to get to the actual main bits.
In One of the Girls we follow six girls on a hen party on a Greek island. The narrative was told from the point of view of each of the girls with each seeming to have a hidden agenda. We know early on that someone has died but we don’t know who and this is not revealed until the end. The story is told over a four day period with us being drip fed information about each of the women and their relationship to each other and the bride to be. It did take me some time to get to grips with who was who. Gradually secrets are revealed and friendships are both broken and made.
I veered between really disliking one character in particular but ended up understanding the reasons for her behaviour. There was a lot of character growth in this novel, no one was unscathed but they did return as stronger people.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in return for an honest review.
📚Book Review: It's cold and grey and miserable outside in the UK at the moment, so why don't we brighten it up with some sun, sea, and a spot of murder?
This is basically the premise of @lucyclarke_author's ONE OF THE GIRLS. Six women head to a gorgeous Greek Island for a hen do weekend of fun and relaxation. However, they all have their secrets and by the end of the trip, a body is found on the treacherous rocks below their luxury villa.
I devoured this in both kindle and audio, and I must say the audio edition was done superbly, and I couldn't wait to pop my headphones in and listen every chance I got.
Full of suspense, excellently plotted and compelling, if you're after a psychological thriller to distract you from the January Blues, look no further.
My second Clarke thriller and pleased to say I enjoyed this one as well making Clarke an auto go-to author in this genre now!
I love a thriller that switches through characters making you desperate to get to their turn again making it a fly through read.
Narrated really well.
Thanks to NetGalley, Harper Collins Audio and Clarke for an eAlc in exchange for an honest review.
A trip from hell!
A gripping read (or listen should I say) from the start. Although we are told from the beginning that someone is dead and I immediately thought this booked was going to be another ’whodunnit’. It slowly became more than that. As well as wanting to know who was dead and how, I because fascinated with each character and their backstories, knowing there was something more to each of them.
I couldn’t wait to get back to listening to find out more.
A great thriller! Would definitely recommend!
Thank you to the publishers for allowing me access to the audiobook via netgalley in exchange for an honest review
What a great read. I enjoyed it right from the get go, and it only got better as all the twists and turns were revealed. I wasn't expecting that ending, and I absolutely loved the little snippets we got of the 'after'. Highly recommend.
I loved this book! 5 stars!
At first by having a lot of characters I wasn’t fully invested getting confused on who was who however as the plot thickened I loved the different opinions and stories from the female leads.
Perfect thriller/mystery read!
