Great way for kids (though suitable to readers of any age) to be able to read a Sherlock Holmes story in a way that’s easily understandable
I have read several in this excellent series, and this is the first I haven't quite enjoyed as much as I thought I would. It is much trickier to adapt a full novel down to the length these books are set at, so what works perfectly for the short stories, doesn't quite work here. While in the short stories barely anything has been altered, here a few things have been. I don't think it affects the core story and it does get across the key elements of Conan Doyle's original. It's not bad, just not great. Having said that I'm still giving it 4 stars, as the younger audience this is intended for will, I'm sure, enjoy it.
"The Hound of the Baskeevilles" is the only one of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories that I genuinely enjoy due mainly the gothic elements and overtones so I was interested to see how Alex Woolf had adapted it for a much younger audience.
This abridged adaptation does a good job at conveying the main storyline, however, much I what I personally love about the tale has been excluded making the story less engaging and interesting to me.
That said, I can appreciate that this is still a good introduction to the story for young people. With the accompanying illustrations and simplified narration, I think this book would be well received by 7 to 12 year olds.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me a free digital copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a children’s adaptation of the classic Sherlock Holmes story and includes new illustrations.
I am very familiar with the entire Sherlock oeuvre. I’ve read every novel and every short story, some more than once. While I appreciate the effort to introduce these stories to children, I do not generally enjoy these adaptations myself. Hound is an intricate novel with fascinating gothic nuance and genuinely frightening scenes. This adaptation for children felt quite anemic in comparison.
That said, children likely won’t make the same comparison I did because they won’t know what they are missing. Hopefully there is still enough meat in the story to keep them interested and curious enough to read the full novel when they are older.
Thank you @NetGalley and @ArcturusBooks for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I am a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes in all forms and this adaptation for younger readers is a wonderful way to introduce readers to the joy that is Sherlock. The mystery is thrilling and tense, but not too scary, even though the subject matter was quite scary in the original story. I love the voice they use for Sherlock, giving him a vibrant enthusiasm for solving the puzzles he encounters. I think these could be made into excellent classroom activities in a gifted classroom or used as an enrichment activity.
I’m not probably alone as claiming The Hound of the Baskervilles as my favorite Sherlock Holmes novel. Author Alex Woolf did yeoman’s work turning this classic into an abridged, accessible novel for young people.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Arcturus Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Alex Woolf does retellings of the classics in order to introduce young readers to theses important novels. This example that Alex retold was Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound Of Baskervilles and was illustrated Eve O'Brien. Although the target audience was 7+, I enjoyed the shortened version.
Thank you Alex Woolf, and NetGalley for the privilege of reading and reviewing this charming little story.
One of the more complicated plots to follow but I think this adaptation was very well done. Again the illustrations work perfectly alongside the text and it is a very fun story
What a fantastic introduction to the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I've never read the Sherlock Holmes books and thought this would be a great way to judge whether I'd enjoy them. The story flows nicely and I loved the illustrations. I would definately look for more adaptations by this author.
This is one of the few Holmes stories I have read after having a little bit of an obsession with one of the old movies of it!
I have to say this is spot on, simplifying the story for kids to read without dumbing it down at all! It also keeps the essence of the story which I always find deliciously gothic and chilling!
The Baskerville family of Dartmoor live under an appalling curse. They are haunted by a monstrous hound that has sent many of them to an early grave. Can our legendary sleuth save Sir Henry Baskerville before the hound strikes again?
This is a retelling from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, a great way to introduce this clever characters to kids in a simplified plot! The illustrations are lovely, I totally recommand.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion from NetGalley and Acuturus Publishing.
A great terrifying hound, the mists of the moors and a mystery of a great myth. This book features a supernatural murder and a race against time to save the newest inheritee of Baskerville Hall. It seems he’s destined to die, just like his relatives. With a hound on the loose, is there anything the eminent Sherlock Holmes can do to prevent the next Murder?
This is one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes stories and one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famously well known tales.
This adaptation did it perfect justice and managed to expertly disseminate the story in 6 easy to read and highly entertaining chapters. With some great illustrations along the way and fab storytelling, it’s perfect for younger readers who want to read these classics.
Thank you so much to Arcturus and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
This is one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, every time I read this one I love it. I think one thing I love about it is that Watson is effectively left to take the reins of the case and to care for the soon to be victim whilst Holmes is elsewhere.
I love the creepy legend of the Baskerville hound, that kills people out of sheer fear. I love that I forget every time who the villains actually are and that I get to solve them again and again, I love piecing this story together because it’s such an unusual and unique case.
It’s really eerie with the moors, one step too far and your sucked in, that and the hound and the hiding criminals of the moors it makes this whole mystery that much more mysterious. You are creeped out, intrigued and fascinated all at the same time. You are trying to solve a case that isn’t easy to solve but is fun to try too.
There is so much that happens in this particular story and it’s really fascinating. I loved the illustrations throughout, I really love that aspect of these particular books.
This was a easy read as a refresher to this famous short story.
This was a short and simple adaptation of the Holmes story for young readers.
A good Introduction into the world of Holmes and Watson without being overwhelming.
Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book for review.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I love reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories and was therefore excited to read this new Addison series meant for kids! Its a great take with a simplified plot but it's still very enjoyable and true to the original. 100% recommend for kids and adults alike!
The children are just loving this series. They are shorter versions of the well loved Sherlock Holmes stories but made more suitable for children. They have lovely simple illustrations set within the story. A lovely bedtime read.
The Baskerville family of Dartmoor live under an appalling curse they are haunted by a monstrous hound that has sent many of them to an early grave can Sherlock Holmes save Sir Henry Baskerville before the hound strikes again
Really enjoyed this book totally recommend you will throughly enjoy
Thank You NetGalley and Arcturus Publishing
I just reviewed The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Alex Woolf. #NetGalley
This is another of the Sherlock Holmes chapter books for young readers. Each is illustrated to add to a child’s reading enjoyment. This time the story is one of Conan Doyle’s best known, The Hounds of the Baskervilles. Readers new to the tales will read such a good one here and one with a famous quote that many adults will remember. This particular work also influenced the writer of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
I recommend this entire series. The books are just right for lazy summer days.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Arcturus for this title. All opinions are my own.
** “Everything is significant, until it proves otherwise.” **
Alex Woolf retells one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most popular Sherlock Holmes short stories, “The Hound of the Baskervilles,” illustrated by Eve O’Brien.
Once again narrated by Dr. Watson, the two are called in to investigate the misfortune that falls upon the descendants of the infamous Baskerville family. When the last known relative is set to arrive in England, Sherlock and Watson must look into the mysterious legend of the hound that hunts the Baskervilles.
“The Hound of the Baskervilles,” which is due out July 1, is filled with intrigue, twists and turns, and secret identities.
Filled with delightful illustrations, the story is told in a fun and easy way kids of all ages will understand. This series is a great way to introduce young readers to Doyle and the great Sherlock Holmes, but adults will also enjoy these short stories. The story slowly lays out the clues, allowing the reader to solve the mystery alongside Sherlock.
Five stars out of five.

The rumor of a ferocious hound, a harbinger of death, has haunted the Baskerville family for ages, right down to the current descendant Henry Baskerville. When Henry comes home from abroad to take possession of his rightful estate after the mysterious death of its previous resident Sir Charles Baskerville, weird happenings set him on high alert and he seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. A thrilling tale of intrigue, suspense and horror follows, refreshingly different from the "tame" London cases Holmes solves from his 221B Baker Street apartment. Danger lurks round every corner on the eerie moors, and someone seems to be out for Henry's blood! Can Holmes and Watson penetrate the deep mystery and set Henry's mind at rest? Or will Henry be "hounded" to a terrible fate like that of his ancestors? A great children's adaptation of a gripping mystery that has thrilled and delighted generations of readers young and old!
