I enjoyed reading Sherlock Holmes stories when I was younger. They were sometimes difficult to follow, but they were still fun to read. This book is one in a series of stories that were condensed for children. The Red Headed League was written as 6 chapters with some illustrations throughout. The language was simple and easy to understand, yet didn’t diminish the original story. It was well done and I would recommend it and others in the series to older grade school children who enjoy reading mysteries.

This book is from an illustrated and adapted-for-children Sherlock Holmes series. These adaptations are great. While some editing is done, the story concepts are presented fully. I didn’t feel like I was missing any details and that’s good!

The books are written for readers from 7 to 11 years old and are about 50 pages each. The series is a great way to introduce kids to Holmes. I highly recommend them!

🕵 This story is probably not as familiar to the general population unless you are a big Sherlock fan. In a nutshell, the story is about a mysterious Red-Headed League who only employs people with red hair. Of course, Sherlock sniffs out foul play! It is a fun mystery with a great conclusion.

Thank you @NetGalley and @Arcturusbooks for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Another fabulous adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes tale for younger readers. I think this mystery suits itself very well for a wide range of ages. The humor and plotting are incredibly easy to follow and the crime is clear and understandable. I loved the description of Holmes needing quiet time to puzzle things out. Another literary hit!

I loved being able to share my enjoyment of Sherlock with my kids. The Red Headed League did just that. Alex Woolf perfectly adapted the story into something that my kids not only understood but actively engaged in. They were speculating and trying to unravel Sherlock's methods even as we read along. The story also felt fresh so wasn't just the same story you always see. Well done.

This was a short and simple adaptation of the Holmes story for young readers. A good introduction into the world of Holmes and Watson without being overwhelming. Easy to read with some illustrations.

As I already wrote for another story in this series this is an excellent retelling of a Holmes short stories and it's for younger readers. Even if I'm well over the target age I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling and the story kept me hooked.
I liked the illustrations.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

** “It was an ingenious puzzle that I enjoyed solving. It helped stave off the boredom that is the curse of my everyday life.” **

Alex Woolf retells one of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes short stories, “The Red-Headed League,” illustrated by Eve O’Brien.

Pawnbroker Jabez Wilson brings an interesting case to Holmes and Watson after he worked for a mysterious red-headed league that quickly disappears from its location. After tediously copying passages from an encyclopedia, Wilson suddenly finds the league has closed and he’s without his new, curious job.

Can Holmes figure out the connection between the odd red-headed league and an infamous murderer, thief and forger?

Filled with delightful illustrations, “The Red-Headed League,” which is due out July 1, is told in a fun and easy way kids of all ages will understand. This series is a great way to introduce young readers to Doyle and the great Sherlock Holmes, but adults will also enjoy these short stories. The story slowly lays out the clues, allowing the reader to solve the mystery alongside Sherlock.

Five stars out of five.

I’ll admit, I haven’t read EVERY Sherlock Holmes book, so I had to take the opportunity to read these editions!

What a great way to introduce Holmes to a younger audience! None of the wit or the mystery is lost, the writing is just simplified and made easier to read and understand. I breezed through this, formed some theories of my own and loved the way it was all wrapped up and perfectly illustrated with fun drawings!

Three cheers for Alex Woolf and Arcturus Publishing! I enjoyed all the Sherlock Holmes novels and most of the short stories as a teenager, and this one was no exception. How glad I am that Woolf and his publisher are making Sir Arthur Conan Doyle accessible for the younger set!

For those unfamiliar with the original short story, a pawnbroker consults the Great Detective about a very odd but lucrative job in which he was asked to spend four hours a day copying out the Encyclopaedia Britannica. But after two weeks, the job disappears. What gives? What follows is another of Holmes’ brilliant bouts of deduction. Even adults will love the Alex Woolf adaptation.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The story of the red headed league. Which sees Sherlock Holmes rise to the challenge like a giddy schoolboy, solving a case which isn’t as straight forward as it seems…

Mr Wilson approaches the famous detective to get help on his own mystery. Employed for a menial job only open to those with red hair, he is perplexed when it suddenly shuts down without a trace. Can Holmes get to the bottom of it? Of course he can.

With his trusty Watson by his side and Scotland Yard waiting in ambush, this little story is sure to delight younger readers and introduce them to Arthur conan Doyle’s classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries. With some wonderful illustrations and great retelling of the original story, it’s a perfect and entertaining read for the young’uns (and older’uns who just love a Sherlock Holmes mystery!)

Thank you so much to Arcturus and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review

A business man comes to Holmes over an incredibly strange case, he had taken a well paid job in a red-headed league and just scribing fro an encyclopaedia. Then it stoped out of nowhere. Holmes started looking into the case and found a path to solving an even bigger case.

I really liked this one one, it was different and I liked that the case he was asked to solve he actually didn’t in a way as he was lead down a different more darker path and a bigger case was presented before him. It was really fun reading this one.

I could solve some of what was going on in this one, but not all of it, so was really fascinating learning more as the story revealed itself. I again enjoyed the illustrations throughout the book.

Its such a good series having the Holmes and Watson cases told in a condensed version. If you love mysteries or you have a budding mystery solver theses books are perfect as you get a great mystery but shorter.

A perennial favorite, The Red-Headed League is a great kid-friendly story, whether they are familiar with Sherlock Holmes and the world of Victorian London, or are meeting him for the first time. Sherlock's detective skills are greatly needed when a client presents him with the mysterious story of how he got a well-paying job with the so-called Red-Headed League but the League has now vanished! What is going on? Kids who enjoy logical problems and puzzles will be kept on the edge of their seat and will love getting to the bottom of the strange circumstances, enjoying Sherlock Holmes' intellect and his clever chain of deductions.

Attention those who want to introduce a young reader to Sherlock Holmes this summer; here is your chance! This title is part of a series of reissues of Doyle’s stories in short chapters with comical illustrations.

This time it is the the story of the red headed league. Why are red heads important? What will Holmes and Watson discover? Encourage a child to pick this title up to find out. They may even become lifelong Holmes aficionados.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Arcturus for this title. All opinions are my own.

An excellent abridged version of the classic Sherlock Holmes short story The Red-Headed League, embodying the narrative and spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work brilliantly. Mr Jabez Wilson, a respectable man with fiery red hair, answers to an odd advertisement in the newspaper calling for red-headed men to apply for an easy job offered by the Red-Headed League, In need of more money than his pawnbroker business brings in, Mr Wilson applies and is offered the job, which turns out to be the absurd, monotonous work of copying out the Encyclopaedia Britannica at the office of the Red-Headed League! After doing this odd job for eight weeks and getting paid handsomely, one day Mr Wilson is surprised to arrive at work and see the notice "THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE HAS BEEN CLOSED DOWN", and learns that his "employer" was not the man he claimed to be. When Mr Wilson turns to Sherlock Holmes for help in uncovering the mystery of the Red-Headed League, his investigation reveals far more sinister machinations at work beneath the ruse of hiring Mr Wilson to copy the encyclopaedia -- machinations involving a notorious criminal and an imminent bank robbery! Will Holmes be able to foil the robbery before it is too late?

The cartoonish illustrations capture the plot nicely and will be sure to an extra layer of entertainment for young readers as they follow Sherlock Holmes in unravelling the dark secret behind the bizarre Red-Headed League. This book will be an excellent introduction for kids to Conan Doyle's classic stories, and will hopefully inspire them to read the originals as well! I will certainly be recommending this series to my younger mystery-loving students as the natural next step from the Famous Five and Secret Seven books!

Perfect length for a bedtime story. Very suitable for all of the family. The story feels just like the original but has been written with the younger members of the family in mind. The illustrations are a nice little extra. We are enjoying working through this series.
