This book was everything I hoped it would it be.
I was hooked quickly and completely unwilling to put this down. I devoured this book in just one sitting. I have no regrets and can’t wait to read more by this author.
Book 4 of the series, but same as the others, this can be read as a stand alone.
Love that the are familiar characters in there and seen how they developed. A fantastic series. A must read!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
I started this book as soon I finished the previous one in the series. Mia is a successful author who receives a series of worrying emails. The first few pages demonstrated a mistake in the timing where there is reference to taking medication 'an hour ago' when what Mia is described as doing has clearly taken several hours. Once again there is frequent use of bad language then explicit gory detail when the action switches to the perpetrator. I could not read beyond 10%, these books are not to my taste and do not have the saving grace of a clever story or interesting characters to make them worthwhile.
What a fantastic thriller this book was to read. I totally didn’t see the direction that the writer took the said killer. The writer’s method was imaginative and suspenseful. The excitement and the entertainment consumed the hole book. Having the killer take the lead in so much of the book was terrific. My favorite character Grav lend a hand in many of the entertainment moments of the book. Kessey has stepped to plate and taken the reins and I absolutely loved her ability to do what was required. The intensity of the book was high and satisfying. The surprising hits kept coming with Adams character. This is a book to read for people who love a juicy thriller.
Great plot! Mia has a horrible email threatening her and her daughter, with photos and personal details. She has no idea about the sender or the motive. DI Gravel gets involved in this sinister plot, racing against time to keep Mia safe.
I really enjoyed this thriller, with lots of twists and edge of your seat situations!
Another book in which D.I Gravel "Grav" appears.
Grav's health is not what it should be and he is not enjoying being on sick leave.
Mia Hamilton the daughter of an old friend is having problems with a stalker and turns to Grav for help.
The stalker uses some great disguises to enter Mia's house and place cameras around the place so he can track Mia's movements and listen to her and her daughter Leah.
There are some wonderful familiar characters in the book which is full of suspense and an ending that is sad and unexpected but so fitting to the Great D.I Gravel.
Another excellent installment for DI Gravel.
This one is much darker than the others in the series, and is the last outing for this unlikely hero.
Author Mia has a stalker. Someone who is evil to the core, and will stop at nothing to make her life a misery.
She assumes that this is a complete stranger, but could it be someone closer to home? Some one she knows and trusts?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will look out for more books by this amazing author. This whole series is well deserving of 5 stars.
Such a well crafted novel, compelling enough to pull you through and very quick read. I enjoyed it so much from the first page till the end.
A very real insight into stalking at its worst, not as good as i expected but still a good read
Thank you to Netgalley for the arc
Last in the DI Gravel series, this book is a dark psychological thriller with a villain as disturbed as in the previous three books. When Mia starts to get threatening emails, she doesn't know where to turn. Her stalker seems to foresee her every move, and Mia is concerned not only for her own safety but that of her daughter. After her sister suggests she contact their old family friend, Grav, he also starts to get emails from the stalker, threatening his adult daughter. On extended sick leave and looking at forced retirement, Grav brings acting DI Kesey in to help, putting her on the stalker's target list as well. How will they stop someone they can't find, who always seems to be one step ahead? Previously published as Anonymity.
Book 4 in the DI Gravel Series and another dark and graphic story. A police procedural/psychological thriller that had me gripped from start to finish. Well written by an author who clearly knows his stuff. I couldn’t put this down until I finished it. The killer is identified early on in the book which can sometimes be a bad thing but not in this case.
Briefly, Gravel has had another heart attack and is on sick leave when novelist Mia asks for his help. She has been targeted by a stalker who seems to know her every move. Gravel’s colleagues are investigating a serial killer but he needs their help when his daughter Emily is in danger and contacts acting DI Laura Kesey.
This book really reaches into the mind of this deranged psychopath and despite knowing who it is the tension ramps right up. Brilliant read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Maybe the darkest in this series and a good thriller, may be the best in this series.
It starts slowly and closes with a bang and a satisfying solution.
It's a fast paced and twisty thriller that I strongly recommend.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Not my favourite of the series but still worth a read. I found it very creepy when Mia is threatened by her Number One fan who knows all her movements.
Our unlikely hero, DI Gravel, is on sick leave as his lifestyle has caught up with him. Time for Laura, acting DI to get involved.
Written in a very chilling way with a twist at the end!
This is book 4 in the Carmarthen Crime series, and I read it after book 3, but that is not required. Gravel is still recovering from the health issues in the previous book and his medically forced retirement. Similar to the previous book, in a way, it's about how a troubled person can manipulate not only a persons emotions, but their beliefs and actions. When Misa requests Gravel's help, he has to try to return to a spark of his former self to help keep her safe. Not as much of a roller coaster as the previous book, but it keeps you reading!
The Dryslwyn Castle Killings was called Anonymity. by John Nicholl is one of the best authors I have read. This is the fourth book in the brilliant DI Gravel series and WoW this has been one of the best series I have read. This book is a chilling Psychological Thriller and like all his books I have read, once I started I Couldn't Put it Down. Plus, its a great standalone book but, I do HIGHLY recommend you read the other three books they will not disappoint.
It's full of great twists and turns and John has a way of drawing you into his books..........But this book was WoW brilliant then Bang.......what a fantastic ending! Didn't see that coming. This is what makes John Nicholls a brilliant author.
DI Gravel is a brilliant character someone who you could look up to and tell him all your problems over a bottle of beer. Wine in my case. I just loved this character.
The novels in the DI Gravel Series include: new and old titles. So don't get confused.
The Carmarthen Murders was Portraits of the Dead (DI Gravel, #1)
The Tywi Estuary Killings was Before I Met Him (DI Gravel, #2)
The Castle Beach Murders was A Cold Cold Heart (DI Gravel, #3)
The Dryslwyn Castle Killings was Anonymity (DI Gravel, #4)
The Dryslwyn Castle Killings is a psychological thriller, a genre that I am rather fond of. That's whyI had high hopes for this book, which I thought would be set against the background of a ruined castle. But in the end I was a bit disappointed.
While I really liked the idea of the book, an author being stalked and threatened by her "number one fan", and it was certainly an interesting story, I found the execution less successful.
I found the foul language and the killing of animals completely unnecessary to create an atmosphere of fear and tension. On the contrary, I think suggestion contributes much more to tension than all the explicit language, threatening e-mails and killings in this book.
In addition, I found the characters rather flat and the dialogues sometimes felt a bit unnatural. The way the protagonist of this book reacted to the death of her lost ones was difficult to comprehend, even considering the the enormous strain she was under. The way Mia reacted reminded me sometimes of Saga in the Bridge, a total absence of As a result, as a reader, I could not empathize with the Mia or her sister.
The detective inspector in this book played only a minor role, which may be part of the reason why I wasn't an immediate fan. Well, I guess the inspector Gravel series is just not my cup of tea. There are far better books in this genre.
To summarize my review:
I think the story has potential and it is certainly not a bad book to read and definitely keeps your attention engaged until the last page, but it could have been so much better. I found the ending a bit of a let down and it seemed a bit rushed. All things considered a small 3 stars.
A final remark about the title: for the life of me I cannot fathom why it is called the Dryslwyn Castle Killings because there isn't a mention of a castle anywhere in the book. I discovered that the book has been published under a couple of different names, all of which were more appropriate.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Boldwood Books for an advance copy of The Dryslwyn Castle Killings, the fourth novel to feature DI Gareth “Grav” Gravel of Carmarthen Police.
Mia, an author, is being threatened by her “number one fan” who asks her to complete more and more compromising tasks in return for not harming her or her young daughter. In desperation she asks Grav for help, but his poor lifestyle has caught up with him and he’s on sick leave so he calls in Acting DI Laura Kesey to lead the investigation.
I didn’t get into the spirit of The Dryslwyn Castle Killings so it didn’t engage my attention and it took me days to finish as I found so many other things to do than pick it up again. I’ll be clear that this is a personal thing as the novel is well constructed and the “number one fan” is a truly chilling and realistic killer, because Mia isn’t his first victim.
The narrative is mostly split between Mia and the killer’s perspectives with Grav and Laura chipping in as and when necessary. The killer is identified to the reader from the start so the novel is mostly about his mind games, the terror he inflicts on Mia and the threats he makes to Grav. I can admire the way it is done and the genuine chills it invokes, but I am very uninterested in the thoughts and machinations of fictional killers, I much prefer the guessing involved in an unidentified killer. Also, I’m sad to say that I felt no sympathy for Mia who has an opioid addiction and seems to make one poor decision after another. Intellectually I understand that she is panicked, but emotionally I feel that she has victim rather than survivor stamped all over her, reactive rather than proactive and too reliant on others to save her.
I like the ending to the novel. It’s unusual and deviates from the norm, so I found it refreshing.
The Dryslwyn Castle Killings is not for me, but don’t let my choices put you off a novel full of action, twists, tension and perhaps a little emotion.
Well written detective story with engaging characters, and interesting plot that kept me hooked from the beginning. I enjoyed how DI Gareth solved the case.
Thank you to John Nicholl, NetGalley, and Boldwood Books for the arc of this book.
Book four in the Carmarthen Murder series and what a cracking read. A stalker is only the beginning. Atmospheric, dark, intense and this read chilled me to the bone. I literally have no nails left. Full of heart in your mouth moments, bloody terrifying and impossible to put down.
DI Gravel is nearing the end of his time in the police force. Just how far will he go to stop the most vicious killer he has ever come across??? Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
If there is one thing you can rely upon from a book by John Nichol it is that from the very beginning it is going to take you on one heck of a journey as he takes an ordinary person and pits them against the extraordinary. Anonymity is no exception to that rule! We read about successful author Mia, who is already battling an addiction to prescription painkillers, being driven to edge by a figure of pure evil.
John has a wonderful knack of creating very believable characters as well as building a marvelous sense of atmosphere – the hairs on the back of my neck were on end during more than one paragraph.
A well-deserved 5 stars from me, this book is deliciously dark and very intense; I simply couldn’t put it down.
