I’d like to thank Random House UK, Transworld Publishers and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Love Untold’ by Ruth Jones exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Grace is soon going to be 90 years old and while she doesn’t want any fuss what she’d really like is to heal the rift that’s come between the female members of her family over the past thirty years. But first she needs to find her daughter Alys who she believes is an artist but this will be at risk of betraying her grand-daughter Elin. Elin’s daughter, her great grand-daughter Beca, is too busy trying to get through her teenage years and keep her own secrets.
‘Love Untold’ is a novel of the bond between mothers and daughters. This is my first Ruth Jones novel and although the characters were nicely described they didn’t come across as realistic and true to life and there were a lot of Welsh phrases that I didn’t understand. The story was too much of a slow burn, it kept losing my attention and I wanted it to speed up a bit. It’s obvious that the novel is well-written and from reading other reviews it appeals to a lot of readers, but I’m afraid I’m not one of them and I struggled to get involved. I’m afraid this isn’t a book I’ve enjoyed and after jumping over some chapters I was glad to get to the end where fortunately there was a nice twist to finish with.
A real heartfelt book spanning generations. Following the ups and downs of family life. Ruth Jones is becoming an author to watch.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an ARC
What a lovely book. I read it in one sitting. Ruth Jones certainly knows how to write and her characters certainly come to life.
Telling the stories of four generations of women, full of humanity and warmth.
I was so excited when the publisher kindly approved my request to read Ruth Jones' new novel on NetGalley I may just have let out an exclamation of glee and done a happy dance around the room - so thank you Bantam Press for making me an incredibly happy lady!
Ruth creates such down to earth, believable characters - people you would love to have in your friendship circle or family - and you can't help but read her books with Nessa's fantastic voice in your head. Grama Grace is the most wonderful character who has hints of the excellent character Doris from Gavin & Stacey but without the profanities. She's not backward in coming forward though as we discover when she is "rescued" from her daily swim in the sea by a well-meaning couple early on in the book, scenes which had me chuckling out loud. In contrast we also meet Grace's grand-daughter Elin, head mistress of the local high school and embarrassing mum to Beca. She lives by what people will think of her and rarely strays from any rule book (real or self-created) which makes her very straightlaced. Which leaves the missing link, Grace's daughter Alys. Last seen decades ago Grace longs to put right the misconstrued last moments they shared and to explain where she feels things went wrong before she departs this mortal coil.
I loved this book, which shows that we are all fallible as humans, there is no right or wrong way to do things and every family has its secrets. The younger characters discover that no, they didn't actually invent everything, things have been happening that way for generations and just because the older folks don't talk about stuff openly doesn't mean it didn't happen or have a lasting effect. There is a great balance of humour and sentiment throughout the book - some people you will want to throttle due to their stubbornness and others you'll just want to throw your arms around and hug.
I cannot recommend this book enough, just make sure you get your tissues ready as you will need them for both tears of sadness as well as some great laughs.
Pure brilliance from Ruth Jones once again. A neon-bright 5 stars from me.
Grace is nearly 90 but all she wants for her birthday is to be re-united with Alys her daughter. She hasn't seen or heard from her for 30 years.
She has her grandaughter and great grand daughter but both of those have problems of their own.
Time is rushing past and can she fulfil her wishes without upsetting the rest of the family.
Watch out for the final twist!
I received this book via NetGalley and give it my honest opinion.
Ruth writes a heartfelt story about family, four generations and all the ups and downs having a family brings. You will go through every emotion possible during this book. I loved every page turned and laughed and cried through out.
A great book to escape into on a wet rainy day.
An enjoyable read
Grace is about to turn 90, she swims daily in the sea whatever the weather, she practices yoga and is physically as ‘fit as a fiddle’. An upcoming 90th birthday can’t help but be a time of reflection and Grace does just that and looking back over her life she likes a lot of what she sees. After a rocky start she has built something solid. But what she does know, is that for this birthday she doesn’t want cake, presents or a party, what she wants is to heal the rift in her family that has been there for the past 30 years.
This is my first Ruth Jones book and I shall definitely be returning for another and another and … As with her TV writing Ms Jones’ characters are complex, messy and oh so lovable. The story was fabulously feel good, just the right pace with a nice little twist at the end.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Highly recommended.
Yet another great read from Ruth Jones. Following four generations of women in a family with secrets and strong beliefs. It has emotion and humour at its heart which kept me turning the pages. I was captured from the first page right through to the last.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
This book started well for me and I was keen to get into it. I lost my way with it a bit and couldn’t keep my attention when I got about a third of the way through. There are a lot of welsh phrases in the book too which I didn’t understand but if you speak Welsh or are welsh it would be great.
I really like Ruth Jones and was looking forward to her new novel.
It did not disappoint.
Set in Wales a story of 4 generations of women. This story was heartwarming, intresting and really easy to ready.
Loved it
📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚. This book was written By Ruth Jones. Famous for writing and starring in Gavin & Stacey! Publication date - 22nd Sept. I’m going to be honest here ……. When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue and finish this book. Only because it was a slower pace than I’m used to and I wasn’t sure if it was for me!
I’m so glad I did though …… I loved this book. It was a nice, cosy feel read. Grace is nearly 90 and her granddaughter is organising a secret party for her. The storyline is told through Grace, her daughter, her granddaughter and great granddaughter. Definitely pick this up if it’s your kind of read. @itssandrini I think you would like this one! #books #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookstagrammer #bookstore #booksofinstagram #bookstagramfeature #bookshop #bookshelves #bookslover #booksigning #booksandcoffee #booksale #booksbooksbooks #booksph #bookstagramfeatures #bookstack #bookstagramer #booksforkids #bookseries #booksarelife #booksandbeans #bookstagrampl #bookshelfie #bookstagramespa #BooksforSale #booksofIG #bookstagrammers #Booksy #bookslovers
I’m a huge fan of Ruth Jones both as an actress and also an author. Her books are getting better and better.
Love Untold is set in Ruth’s country of Wales and tells the story of four generations of women in the same family.
Grace is 89 years old and has certainly lived life to the max. Alys is her daughter and has had a very unsettled life both with and without Grace, her daughter is Elin a successful headteacher and loves to be in control, lastly Beca,, Elins daughter who is only 16 and is trying to find a way of keeping her mother Elin off her back.
This book is told by all four women and goes back to when Grace was a teenager. We also meet her lifelong friends and companions John and Cissie who have been there through graces life.
A lovely story of how life takes different turns and changes peoples lives.
A very unexpected twist at the end which finished it beautifully, I even had a tear in the last page.
A fantastic five star read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK for an advanced copy of this book.
Love Untold is a truly delightful book, one that I didn't want to come to an end! Ruth Jones has written a heart-warming, and often heart- rendering, book about mother /daughter relationships. Set in Wales we meet the four generations of Meredith women; we learn their family history and watch on as family secrets unfold. Thank you so much to NetGalley, the author and publisher for allowing me to read an arc of this book, one that I highly recommend you put to the top of your reading list.
Four strong women from four generations of the same family and each with troubles and opinions that won’t shift. Written with real heart, these women all discover themselves through the course of the and there are tears and laughter along the way. Hugely enjoyable.
Love Untold is the tale of four generations of Welsh women with complicated histories: Grace, the matriarch who is 89, her estranged daughter Alys, her granddaughter, Elin, and great-granddaughter Beca. I found it hard to keep up with the constant flashbacks and different POVs but that didn't spoil the overall experience of reading the book.
The characters are well drawn although I have to say that I can't think of any 89-year-old woman who had the energy that Grace had. It would have felt more realistic to me if she'd been at least 10 years younger. I also would have preferred a different ending but will avoid spoilers! However, I am sure many readers will enjoy Love Untold. Many thanks to NetGalley and Bantam Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Beautifully written, poignant and funny at the same time. Highly relatable and just fabulous! Explores themes like family, friendship and other relationships in a down to earth and realistic way.
Absolutely loved this! A heartwarming read that will have you laughing and crying, as you learn about the family. Definitely one to recommend. Another hit for Ruth!!
Love untold follows the story of four generations of Welsh Women with very complicated relationships. Grama Grace is soon to be ninety and is estranged from her daughter, Alys. Her granddaughter, Elin also has a complicated relationship with her own daughter, teenager Beca.
This story was so heartwarming and beautifully written. I loved the characters and how their love for each other was evident even during the hard times. A gorgeous family drama I would highly recommend
Oh what a book! Ruth Jones latest novel is an absolute joy.
This is a beautiful story about four generations of a family, as they struggle with the past and present. Four feisty female characters, but mostly about love and family bonds.
I am not ashamed to say it made me cry!
Fabulous and I look forward to reading more from Ruth Jones.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
A story of four generations of mothers and daughters introduces us to 89 year old Grace, her daughter Alys, granddaughter Elin and great-granddaughter Beca, and the various challenges they face in their relationships with each other, and with life in general. As they prepare for Grace's 90th birthday, Grace hopes for a reconciliation with Alys, a wayward alcoholic who has always blamed her mother for her father's death. Elin, meanwhile, struggles with her marriage and with Beca's lack of academic ambition, while Beca herself, like any typical 16-year-old, struggles to establish her own sense of self.
A funny, warm and absorbing story, this has great characters. Grace is an independent, fiery woman who still swims in the sea, and maintains her close friendships with long-term partner John and his sister Cissie; Alys's problems should make her dislikable but her vulnerability will touch your heart. Elin is a bit of a control freak, but has everyone's best interests at heart, and Beca is just a joy to get to know.
The women's relationships are reflected in the title of the book - they love each other deeply, but don't always know how to show it. Their journey towards acceptance of each other, not just one or the other's mum, gran or granddaughter, but as women in their own right, who have the right to live their lives in the way they choose, is what makes this such a great read.
