This is a wonderful little book about Nikola Tesla! Informative, engaging. The art is lovely. So glad to see a book about this creative genius. Perfect for read aloud or emerging readers.
Nikola lived during a unique time. A time when electricity was making a way in the world and he got to be part of that. Despite Edison not seeing Tesla's vision, Tesla was able to make it happen. A lesson for children, all of us, to never give up when we can see a clear solution.
The illustrations are great. I liked the added content at the end of the book, especially reading suggestions to learn more about Nikola Tesla.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

“Born during a lightning storm, his mother Djuka proclaimed that her son would be a child of light.”
Nikola Tesla, whose name is probably now associated mostly with Elon Musk’s electric car, is the man who gave us the alternating current that powers homes and businesses all over the world.
He was born on 10 July 1856 (Happy birthday a couple of days late, Nik!), and his mother was right. Light was definitely in his future.
He adored his cat, Macak, and when he was startled to feel the sparks and crackling from stroking Macak’s fur, his father explained what electricity was. (Cats feature in many of the illustrations, including a robot cat at the end.)
My Goodreads review has an illustration with the caption:
“There were sparks and a crackling noise!”
Dare I say that was just the spark he needed? He and his mother started making little machines at home. (She should be getting more credit, I bet.)
My Goodreads review has an illustration with the caption:
“And before he was six, Nikola had created his first motor all by himself.”
He kept imagining things and building them, inventing all the time. The world had electricity, but there was no way to carry it over long distances without losing power until he discovered alternating current, the AC electricity we know today.
So off he went to New York to meet Thomas Edison, who set up the first electric power station and gave us the light bulb (globe).
My Goodreads review has an illustration with the caption:
“Nikola was recommended for a job with Thomas Edison”
When it turned out Edison didn’t believe in alternating current, Nikola sold his idea elsewhere, and eventually, a power station at Niagara Falls lit up the city of Buffalo, NY, many miles away.
He imagined robots, remote controls, and all kinds of things that seemed impossible then but which we take for granted now.
My Goodreads review has an illustration with the caption:
“He even imagined that—one day—the wind and the sun would give us endless energy and that messages and pictures could be sent wirelessly, too.”
My Goodreads review has an illustration with the caption:
“He didn’t get rich from his creations, but his imagination and creativity changed the world into what it is today.”
As always, there are four black and white photos at the end along with a short biography with more detail and a reference to another ‘real’ book about Tesla.
A few years ago, I read a fascinating book by Graham Moore called "The Last Days of Night", which is still a favourite. It’s about the Edison vs Westinghouse rivalry that became known as the War of Currents, and it really was a shocker of a war (sorry, couldn’t help myself). Nikola Tesla features in it, of course, but that would make heavy reading for children.
It is hard to make this exciting for children, but I hope it might start some conversations. Nikola Tesla’s story is an important one, and I’m pleased it’s been added to the library.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto’s Frances Lincoln Childrens’ Books for the preview copy from which I have shared a few illustrations.
[This is being published in early September.]
This is a great little book. It’s tells of a hero. Good message. Highly recommend for both myself and my husband as well. Tesla has also bee! Interested to me. Highly recommend .
So happy to see Nikola Tesla featured! I think it will be an inspiration to a lot of kids! Overall I very much enjoyed the book and his story and would recommend it. I wish there might have been just a little more information about his personal life as an adult but I did like seeing how he brought electricity to Buffalo.
I was gifted a copy of this book from Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincol Children's Books in exchange for an honest review. This book is available on Sep 6, 2022. ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐️⭐️ Very informative while engaging with the bright bold illustrations. This book would be appropriate for younger children but would also work as a research tool for middle grade students. I would definitely put this in our 4th grade class library.
Because DC currents were safer for in-home electricity, a lot of people knew Edison's name and not Tesla's until recently. LPBD is a great series and this one about Nikola Tesla showcases his brilliant mathematical and engineering mind. Another great addition that's perfect for libraries and classrooms.
Thank you to netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian boy, who had siblings, but his best friend was a black cat.
One evening, as he was stroking his cat, there were sparks. His father explained that it was electricity. The fascination with electricity continued throughout his life. In college, he studied electricity and later, invented a system to carry electricity long distance. His invention, which he sold, lighted the city of Chicago, then Buffalo in NY.
Nikola Tesla had over 300 patents, but the story focus on electricity. Its straight forward concentration on electricity makes it easy to understandable for children/young readers what he was most famous for. The illuminating illustrations are eye-catching.
My eight-year-old nephew wasn’t familiar with this inventor. It was an interesting story, which captured his imagination.
I am ashamed to say that although I had heard of Nikola Tesla, and that he was an inventor - that's about as far as my knowledge went.
So I particularly enjoyed this one, as everything I read, was new to me!
Great book, great series - keep them coming!
Nikola Tesla has inspired an alternating current circuit to be constructed in my living room.
This book is full of vibrant blue tones and wonderful illustration capturing the attention of young minds. Detailed drawings give us a glimpse into history and the moments that changed the way we live today.
The story of Nikola Tesla is easy to read and full of inspiring moments- so much so that my seven year old decided now was the time to try out electrical circuits. My four year old adored the cat running through the illustrations and storyline and enjoyed spotting Macak on each page.
Another calm and awe inspiring book to add to your Little People Big Dreams collection.
I was gifted a digital copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Little People, BIG DREAMS. One of a series for adults to read with children and for ESL to polish their English and learn about people who have shaped their world.
A skinny son of a farming family in Croatia had an imagination for things way ahead of his time. Electricity was the thing he loved most and learned how to share it with everyone and even had ideas not developed until long after he stopped working on them.
The illustrations by Alexander Mostov are mostly simple, colorful, and forthright. Every public and school library needs a copy!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
Thank you so much Netgalley and Maria for the review copy! These short yet informative autobiographies are just love.
My younger brother, Zarif, is a huge fan of Nikola Tesla, therefore I was aware of bits and pieces of his life. However, I had no idea about Tesla's childhood, his family and childhood interests: all of which were beautifully summarized in this tiny book. The illustration are stunning as usual. Brilliant work! Highly recommended.
Nikola Tesla is a wonderful addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series! I loved learning about his life and what motivated him to become an inventor. The illustrations are lovely and this book will surely spark the imagination of young inventors!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
I received an electronic ARC from Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books through NetGalley.
Readers meet Tesla as a child and see his curiosity to learn grow as he does. His family encouraged him to experiment. This need to experiment stayed with him for his entire life. Sanchez Vegara writes in a style that encourages younger readers to learn from Tesla and to begin exploring themselves. The timeline at the end offers further informative text.
This is a very cute introduction to Nikola Tesla for young children.
The story is informative and the accompanying illustrations are bold and captivating.
The only critique I have is that the story''s ending doesn't really do justice to Tesla's real life experience. The story makes it seem like he had a happy ending to his career as an inventor which isn't how things really went.
Other than that, I found this to be a really great book for young children.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me a free digital copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
Another fabulous picture book biography from Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara! Nikola Tesla always enjoyed inventing and designing and had a special interest in electricity. As he grew up he questioned the loss of energy that takes place when electricity is transported great distances. Complete with interesting pictures, simple short paragraphs of text and a timeline at the end of the book, this biography has everything that young readers need to be successful when learning about this famous engineer. I would highly recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 6-11 range. This book is an excellent starting off point for researching Tesla or learning about the concepts related to writing a biography. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!
This was cute! I liked the art a lot, and I loved that the cat was a little easter egg on every page.
Nikola Tesla is the newest lead in this latest edition of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. This series is such a delight and the perfect way to educate not just kids but everyone about historic and cultural icons.
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system. This book follows Tesla as he invented the "alternating current" to his work with Thomas Edison.
Alexander Mostov illustrates this installment and does a fantastic job. Mostov's art style was so captivating and his art definitely further helped tell Tesla's story. I love collecting these books and am so thrilled to add this one to the rest of my collection.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Another great installment in the Little People Big Dreams series. Nikola Tesla is someone that I knew next to nothing about before reading this so I really enjoyed learning some new facts about this prominent figure
I knew nothing about Nikola Tesla, so this was an interesting read for both my daughter and myself! We love the Little People Big Dreams book and this one was a great edition to the collection! The publisher made a copy of this book available on Netgalley. This review is my honest opinion.
