I've heard such good things about Emma Lord's books, and now I know why! I thought this was so well-written, I loved the summer camp setting, and will definitely read more from her.
Absolutely loved this book!
The writing style was really good and I look forward to reading any other books from this author in the future :)
Lord is really carving out a space for herself in the YA market, and I adored this latest from her. Her prose is light, sparkling with wit and an absolute joy to read. Filled with a host of likeable and realistic characters, I really enjoyed this.
I’ve seen this book around the internet for a while and the cover intrigued me. I had no idea what it was about, so therefore my expectations were almost non-existent. I just wanted to a light, fun YA read to cleanse my palate.
When photography enthusiast Abby signs up to a DNA service, she’s not expecting to find out anything she doesn’t already know. She’s mainly doing it to support her best friend and long-time crush Leo, who has never known his biological Korean family. However, Abby’s results reveal that she actually has an older sister that she never knew about. An older sister called Savannah Tully who happens to be a very popular influencer. So Abby and Savannah vow to meet up at a popular summer camp, where Leo also happens to work, and figure out why their parents gave Savannah up for adoption.
Parts of the writing had the potential to be beautiful but sadly, the plot was so dull that my attention couldn’t stay gripped long enough to pick up on it. Abby’s passion is photography but there actually aren’t that many instances of her doing photography. She really doesn’t have a lot of personality and she very much came across as a very plain, Bella Swan type, who I just couldn’t bring myself to care about.
Abby likes photography because her late grandfather got her into it. This could have been a really poignant part of the plot where she perhaps had flashbacks to happy times with him but they just didn’t happen. Her Poppy was so important to her but I never got to know him. She’s ‘already thinking about him most of the time’ -so, show me what you’re thinking!
The romance between Abby and Leo is very slow. Usually, this is exactly the kind of romance I like but as there was very little else happening in the book, I just wanted them to hurry up and get together. Despite these rare little moments of cuteness between them, there wasn’t a lot of chemistry and actually they weren’t in the same room or space for a lot of the plot. However, I do think that the will-they-won’t-they thing between them was my favourite part of the book.
You Have A Match could have been a cute, light-hearted YA summer camp romance with a bit of mystery thrown in. I was really hoping for some kind of scandal to unfold regarding Savannah’s parentage or adoption but I’m afraid I was disappointed on that front too. I hate to even hint at spoilers in my reviews but it was the most mundane explanation for giving a child up that you can think of. So, yes you’ve guessed exactly what happened there! There are some glowing reviews of this book on Goodreads, so it definitely is a hit for some but I’ve honestly never read a more boring YA contemporary novel.
What happens when you and your best friend who you have feelings for take a DNA test? Turn out brother and sister? Quite not. You find out you have an older, look alike, perfectionist, Insta famous, rich full blood sister.
To start reading this book it me a little more than usual persuasion but when I did I did like the story and plot lines and this definitely a recommend YA book.
This book talks of grieving of death and how that effects you when you are close to them, how people see you and do not think of you as a consolation. Even though I feel the book skipped chapters/ scenes and maybe could have not over done a few chapters which felt was not needed.
I loved the book. A fun read. Loved the Best friend to lovers, surprise family trope. Definitely a silly read for a reading palette change.
I can't be the only one who's ever thought about doing a DNA test but then wondered about potentially finding a secret relative, right?
Well this book decides to explore that which is why I was so curious to read it! The main plot of the book is the mystery of how Abby ended up with an older sister and why she never knew about her etc, as they try to figure that out, Abby has to go to Camp to spend time with Savvy and her bestie Leo is there too. However, Abby has feelings for Leo that she tried to get rid of after an Incident not too long ago but is he as uninterested as she thought?
I liked the romance between Abby and Leo, I thought it was really sweet and wrapped up nicely with some sweet moments throughout, there was also a cute romance between Savvy and her bestie so there's plenty of friends to lovers going on!
Abby, as a character, I really loved and related to. Not just with the photography aspect as a fellow photographer myself, but with how she was feeling about her grades. I feel like she's going to be a really relatable character for the target age group of this book! I also loved that Savvy's life looked amazing with her influencer lifestyle but it showed that somewhere along the way you can lose the fun in things and if you don't love it then it's not enjoyable!
While the romance was sweet and there was a decent amount of drama, I did find things a little slow in places and my attention wandering but it was still a fun read!
I was one of the people go got completely caught up in the grilled cheese/Tweet Cute hype. I was very excited to read You Have a Match back when it came out in the US, but I didn't get around to it because of all the other books I wanted to read. I wasn't really in the YA contemporary zone at the time. But I saw that Emma Lord's books are releasing in the UK, and I immediately swept them up.
I unfortunately was mostly bored by You Have a Match. I was enticed by the subject matter of a teen girl taking a DNA test and finding a full blooded sister that she had never heard of. I am really into genealogy and it's one of my favourite hobbies, and I even took a DNA test myself quite recently. This book was SO. BORING. though. It took forever to get going, and while I was initially excited by the summer camp setting, it ultimately ended up feeling a little pointless.
I'm very upset. I'm still going to read Lord's third book, mostly because I have it from NetGalley, but I am also really hoping that You Have a Match was just a bit of a blunder. more of an outlier than anything. I'm sad by how boring this one was, because I was ready for the drama, but maybe her third book will be better.
I thought that overall this was a good read. I liked the characters and the storyline. I would have liked to see more of the pranks that were talked about. As you never really get to know what they are and I think that would have given a great insight to the character. But overall a good read.
I had heard good things about this book and I have to agree, it was a great read, I loved the characters and the storylines. Highly recommend!
3.5
Gotta love a good best-friends-to-lovers story! And mixed in with a fascinating concept about discovering you have a biological sister you knew nothing about? It's really entertaining, with a fun summer camp setting that was great to escape to!
The book did feel a bit predictable, it didn't blow me away by any means but I had a great time reading it and I loved the romance, I thought it was so adorable and sweet. But the main plot is definitely that surrounding this hidden sister, and I loved seeing the sisterly relationship between Abby and Savvy grow and develop as they spent more time together, and there were a lot of really touching moments (especially around the fairly recent loss of Abby's beloved granddad).
The characters all felt really well fleshed out and realistic, even all of the side characters, which I appreciate a lot, and you come to feel for them all, especially all of the parents.
I do think that there were quite a few scenes that are just... missed out on? There's a lot of talk about pranks near the beginning, with Abby playing a few pranks on Savvy, and you see the lead-up to these pranks and also the consequences, but never the actual prank itself? It felt like we were missing out on some really entertaining scenes, and I wish at least one of those had been included rather than feeling like I was missing a chapter.
I enjoyed this book and found the storyline really interesting with a lot of drama! It’s a very easy YA read with some aspects being hinted at to let you predict certain storyline plots. I enjoyed the characters in this book and it was such a cute YA book, with The Parent Trap vibes (my favourite childhood movie)!
I loved the ending and how it skipped to a year later, showing how things turned out! This was a key part in my live for this book because the last 25% all I wanted to know was what happened and where everyone ended up! I loved this cute YA read and I’d definitely recommend this to everyone needing a light-hearted and easy read!
Thank you so much to @NetGalley and @stmartinspress for this ARC
This book has parent trap but modern day feels about it and I love it! I loved reading about Abby and Savannah's experience of getting to know each other and their relationship with their families. This book made me laugh, smile and cry, it was a really enjoyable read.
