**Book Review: The Inheritance by Howard Linskey**
Howard Linskey’s *The Inheritance* is a gripping thriller that intricately weaves themes of family, betrayal, and the dark undercurrents of greed. Set against the backdrop of a wealthy estate, the novel follows the unraveling of relationships as a family grapples with the death of its patriarch and the subsequent revelations that come to light regarding his legacy.
Linskey's writing is taut and atmospheric, immediately pulling readers into the world of the affluent yet troubled family. The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, allowing for a rich exploration of each character’s motives and secrets. This narrative technique adds layers of complexity, making it difficult to discern who can be trusted and who might be harboring hidden agendas.
The protagonist, caught in the whirlwind of inheritance disputes and familial tension, serves as a relatable lens through which readers experience the unfolding drama. Linskey does an excellent job of developing the characters, each with their own flaws and desires, making them both compelling and, at times, deeply flawed. The tension builds steadily as old rivalries resurface and buried secrets threaten to explode into the open.
Themes of loyalty and betrayal are expertly examined, as the characters confront not only their relationships with one another but also their own moral compasses. Linskey deftly highlights how the prospect of wealth can distort familial bonds, leading to a reckoning that forces characters to face the consequences of their actions.
The pacing is brisk, with well-timed twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Linskey masterfully blends suspense with psychological depth, ensuring that the story never loses sight of its emotional core. As the plot thickens, the stakes become increasingly high, leading to a climax that is both shocking and satisfying.
Overall, *The Inheritance* is a captivating thriller that examines the darker sides of human nature within the framework of family dynamics. Howard Linskey’s ability to combine a fast-paced narrative with rich character development makes this novel a compelling read. It’s a perfect choice for fans of psychological thrillers and anyone interested in a story that delves into the complexities of inheritance, loyalty, and the ties that bind us—however tenuously.
This is an enjoyable read. It’s a slow burn character driven thriller. The setting is atmospheric. A page turning read
Sarah Hollis's aunt Evelyn Moore leaves everything in her will to her niece, with one condition, that she has to move to a house called Cragsmoor Manor and solve the mystery of Lucy Woodfell who disappeared from the house thirty years ago.
Evelyn believed her friend Lucy was murdered and wants Sarah to prove it. If she does she will inherit everything. She has to catch a killer in six months!!!
A book that held me captive from the first page, tense and exciting I just adored it.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
With thanks to the author, publishers Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House, and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC of this book in exchange of my honest and unbiased review.
What a fantastic premise for a story! A terminally ill aged author updates her will to bequeath her entire and considerable estate to her niece, on the condition that said niece, herself a struggling author, is able to solve a 30-year old mystery and discover the fate of her aunt’s best friend, who went missing in mysterious and suspicious circumstances all those years ago.
The novel had an expertly-woven plot, with lots of twists and turns and so many possible culprits throughout. It really did keep me guessing, and sent me down quite a few priest … err, I mean rabbit holes! I thought I had figured it all out about three quarters of the way through, but boy was I wrong! That ending was explosive, and completely unexpected!
I enjoyed how the story was told by the author, along old and modern timelines, through a combination of personal interviews, manuscripts and letters. All of the characters were very well developed and explained, with the dialog of Sarah’s character in particular being very witty and funny in parts.
Overall a very enjoyable experience, and definitely a new addition to my list of favourite authors.
Absolutely loved this book!
Howard you are amazing!
I was hooked throughout and couldn't put this book down.
Thank you for accepting my ARC request
This book has you turning pages from beginning to end, and was full of twists and turns. Did not expect the ending, and this author will now be one of my new favorite authors. Recommended.
A successful author, leaves her author niece a fortune upon her death, with just one catch. The inheritance depends on solving the mystery of her aunt's missing best friend. What's not to love about a premise like that? In a delightful mix of mystery and gothic horror, this is an intriguing read from beginning to end.
A great thriller that kept me on my toes throughout . Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.
The Inheritance is a brilliant read for those who love a mystery. Howard Linskey throws in a little drama and a light romance- nothing to heavy to distract from the mystery. And he keeps you guessing until the end. Well-written and massively enjoyable
What a intriguing opening. An aging author issuing instructions for her will to her solicitor.
What is even more intriguing are the conditions attached to her potential bequest.
I particularly like the way that the author has created the characters. As the narrative progresses he provides further insights into the incidents in the pasts of the characters, which has shaped how they are today.
This is a novel with plenty of twists and turns in the plot, maintain interest to the end. I won't go into detail about the storyline for fear of spoiling the story. Suffice to say that there is a fast moving denouement which provides an interesting end to the book.
I give my thanks to Netgalley and Penguin (Michael Joseph) for a copy in exchange for this review.
The Inheritance was a twisty thriller slash whodunnit that was easily read.
Sarah when we meet her is grieving her Aunt Evelyn’s death, she goes to the solicitor and is shocked to find her Aunt owned a mansion that Sarah knew nothing about, to Sarah her Aunt struggled for money and spent cautiously. The mansion can be Sarah’s but only if she can solve a thirty year old outstanding murder. She moves east to Cragmoor Manor and has all expenses paid for six months, if she fails to find the murderer of Evelyn’s best friend she loses the mansion and everything that comes with it.
This was an easy read and kept me turning the pages, there were a lot of characters but it was well written so I didn’t get confused. I loved following Sarah on her quest and how she adjusted to life from a one bed flat in London to this huge place. A decent thriller that I would recommend.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Michael Joseph Penguin Random House for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
A gripping page-turning thriller. I finished this within 48 hours. The atmosphere that I enjoyed the most was the atmosphere that the author was able to create. It created a strong element of suspense and danger.
The Inheritance is a great read. It is gripping, atmospheric and jam packed with tension. I loved the setting, I loved the characters. I could not fault it at all.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
This was an intriguing story overall.
An impoverished writer that inherited her late aunt's will and everything that comes with the name, a mansion that she lived at for the last years.
It is not all that easy, as everything comes with a catch.
Sarah has to be the wannabe detective in a cold case and discover whether Lucy was killed or what happened with her after she disappeared a long time ago from the same place, Cragsmore mansion.
There’s a deadline for it as well. Within 6 months she has to solve it or everything goes to someone else. Let me tell you, that person is not as nice and cool as Sarah.
What comes next is an intricate puzzle game where not everything is what it seems and not everyone is happy to help when needed.
Twists and secrets are coming out one after the other in the old mansion.
The tension builds up with each chapter, and the end of the story is as satisfying as you would expect.
🆓📖Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley
I enjoyed this book, it was easy to read and held my attention. I will be reading more from this author :)
To get the inheritance you have to solve a 30 year old mystery, but someone is trying to stop them. A slow burner but it did get better. All in all a good read but nothing special.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Another fascinating novel from the excellent Howard Linskey. Sarah is an impoverished writer whose life seems about to improve drastically when she inherits her late aunt's fortune, but there is a catch! She will only inherit if she can solve the suspected murder of Aunt Evelyn's best friend. She moves up to the North East and takes up residence in the mansion where the friend once lived and attempts to track down the killer. Tense, exciting and well written, this is an involving and surprising novel throughout.
The Inheritance by Howard Linskey.
When Sarah's Aunt Evelyn passes away, she discovers a hidden fortune has been left to her, including a foreboding mansion in a small Northumberland town. But it comes with one condition. For most of her life, Evelyn had been haunted by the loss of a friend who went missing in Cragsmoor - the very house Evelyn has left to Sarah. Now, Evelyn's final wish is for Sarah to return to Cragsmoor and uncover the truth. If she does, she will inherit everything. But someone wishes for the secrets of Cragsmoor to remain hidden.
I really enjoyed this book. Captivated from first page. 5*.
I have read and enjoyed quite a few books by this author, including his Ian Bradshaw series, so I was quite excited to get my mitts on this, his latest stand alone.
This book features Sarah, an author, following in her Aunt Evelyn's footsteps in that career. On her Aunt's death, Sarah finds out that she is in line to inherit all. Including Cragsmore, the old mansion in which Evelyn spent her latter years. Sadly, for Sarah anyway, it's not all as cut and dried as that, as there is a proviso. She will inherit, if - and only if - she manages to solve the mystery of the disappearance of her Aunt's friend Lucy who disappeared some thirty odd years ago from Cragsmore which was her family home then. Evelyn believes that Lucy was murdered and wants Sarah to figure it all out. She must move in to Cragsmore and will have six months to solve it or her inheritance, well, you really don't want to know who's next up for all that money!
Well... this book hit the ground running for me. A big mansion with hidden secrets, a cold case which everyone (but Evelyn) had long since given up on, and a whole cast of believable characters. All wrapped up in an interesting and intriguing mystery that had me on my toes throughout.
After the initial bombshell of the will, things settle in nicely as the layers of intrigue buildup for Sarah. Which is kinda what you'd expect as she is opening up a box that has been left for many years for a lot of people. You wouldn't expect her to suddenly stumble on the key piece of evidence early on. Especially as so many professionals have given up and her own experience in these things is limited to fiction! So it's a slow burn initially as the pieces are pulled into place.
And then, once the set up is complete, it's a bit of a race to the end. An ending that wholly satisfied. Ok so for full disclosure, it's all a wee bit on the fantastical side of reality but I think when you read this book you'll be well able to forgive the author this in exchange for a couple hours of wild entertainment.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Struggling novelist Sarah Hollis unexpectedly learns that she is set to inherit a sizeable estate from her aunt Evelyn Moor. But there is one big condition. Sarah has six months to solve the 36 year old cold case of her aunt's missing friend, Lucy Woodfell. After her disappearance, her aunt bought Lucy's home, Cragsmoor, which Sarah stands to inherit. Sarah moves in and begins to investigate staff members and explore this strange house. This is an entertaining mystery with a very likeable protagonist to root for.
