The setting is beautiful. The characters are intriguing. There is some romance and also mystery. It is a beautiful and engaging story. Captivating.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
I thought this book was slow to start but then realised that this is the perfect narrative style for this gentle story of a rural community with strong characters. Each has their own story and they work together well to support each other. The mystery in the lighthouse is unusual, and uncovering it's truth is interesting. The story keep me interested and engaged right to the last page, the only negative being some American spellings - the book is set in Aberdeenshire, this ruins the atmosphere for me, so it lost one star.
Rachel has been living and working at The Lighthouse Bookshop for around 5 years, but when the owner dies suddenly and she discovers a secret can she help move this on to the next generation?
This was a lovely cosy read - I read most of it while I was on holiday and it fitted the bill nicely. I really enjoyed an insight into all the characters lives and how they all revolves around the bookshop - perfect right? I liked learning about the ‘secret’ you can tell that the author did research this really well. It was also my first book by this author but I’d definitely read more - I really enjoyed it.
A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable and varied, the plot is one that is engaging and medium paced. I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.
As I love books about bookshops and coastal settings I was immediately drawn towards The Lighthouse Bookshop. It's the first novel I have read by the author and I found it to be an enjoyable and escapist read with a cast of likeable characters. I loved the location and felt like I was there and a part of the community. A warm and uplifting read.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
3.5 stars.
This was a lovely read with an engaging cast of characters. There was no particular twist in the tale but it was an enjoyable gentle read.
This book was great. I loved the characters and the location descriptions.
I kept waiting for that little extra twist that was hinted but never happened.
It was just a nice read, mad you feel like you were part of the gang.
I was drawn to this book by the front cover and it didn't disappont. It is well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characters that I loved. I really enjoyed it. The storyline was engaging and really pulls you in, Overall 4 stars
A really lovely read!
Set in a bookshop, in a lighthouse, you will soon fall in love with this book and all its characters and the location.
The author draws you in to all the characters lives and you will soon be rooting for them all as their lives move on and change.
I’d certainly love to read a follow on from this book, seeing what all the characters have been up to.
I will definitely be searching out this author again.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Lighthouse Bookshop. It was such a quick read for me because I found it hard to put down.
I loved the historical theme and the literature but most of all, I was totally drawn into the lives of the community. I don’t think I’ve ever been as reluctant to let characters go at the end of the story …
Cullen’s deathbed mutterings give Rachel a clue that eventually leads to the exciting discovery … a secret that’s been kept for years! And although this is at the heart of the story, and the paper trail exciting, getting to know the inhabitants and visitors in Crovie adds another layer.
Rachel, with a difficult past she wants to leave behind, finds stability managing the Lighthouse Bookshop.
Toby Hollingwood, needing space to write his book, has key skills and contacts that unravel a mystery.
Edie, her intriguing reactions to Ezra, has a hard shell but a generous heart underneath. Loved her no-nonsense attitude.
Gilly, going back to the last place she felt unconditional love and who would never admit she needs a place to belong.
Dora McCreedy, the villain of the story is (as you would imagine) haughty and unlikeable!
These key characters took me through emotional ups and downs as we wait to find out who the new owner of the Lighthouse Bookshop was going to be and their plans.
I loved how it all comes together.
If you enjoy uncovering a mystery, you’ll love this story. If you enjoy the intricacies of relationships, you’ll love this story.
The Lighthouse Bookshop is one of my top reads this year.
On the Scottish coast, in a village pretty much remote stands a lighthouse, in that lighthouse is a bookshop. The only bookshop for miles around. Owned by Cullen MacDonald and where Rachel found solace some years ago.
Tragedy is around the corner when Cullen suddenly dies and with no other living relatives who will inherit the bookshop and can they find someone other than local business woman Dora McCreedy. In the meantime, suddenly bereft and with the possiblity of having to move again Rachel continues to try and keep the place alive. But Cullen leaves a mystery to be solved and all of a sudden this place that Rachel has called home for five years has somes ecerets to tell. Can they find the true reason for the place before it is left to someone who doesn’t see the buildings beauity and the place it has in the community.
For not just being a bookshop, this place seems to gather locals to it’s hearth, to talk, to find books and even to play chess. It helped Rachel can it perhaps help someone else. Gilly is a teenager sleeping rough, Edie is an artist with a secret and an ongoing feud with Ezra her next door neighbour and then Toby, who has come to stay in the village to write his memoirs. His days of journalism are perhaps over, or are they? Does this mish mash of people, all brought together and the building they find themselves hold a story that needs telling.
Yet again, Sharon Gosling has created a book with a wealth of characters, ages and voices. She has set it in the wild landscapes of Scotland. It is a book with mystery, romance, new beginnings, history, second, even third chances and always with that sense of community woven throughout. Written so wonderfully that I did not want to put it down, nor did I want it to end. One of my new favourite authors.
I fell in love with the cover and the I fell in love with the cover. A well plotted and lovely story that made wish I could visit the place and meet the characters.
Well plotted, good storytelling, relatable and fleshed out characters.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I adore a book where the fictional setting feels soo real that you really wish that it were a real place so that you could go and visit. This is the case with this book. I'm so sad that I can't go to where it was set as it sounded so idyllic. Other then the setting the storyline and the characters were also great. You really wished the best for them and I felt like I was part of the storyline every single step of the way.
This is a tale about Rachel who works in bookshop on an inland lighthouse in Newton Dunbar. She uncovers a secret about it’s history and then needs to decide whether to keep it a secret or share it with the wider world
It’s a lovely story which has a great cast of supporting characters as well as the lead character, Rachel. There are elements of historical drama, romantic and family relations, unexpected friendships as well as some more emotional topics covered.
The setting was fabulous, and by the end I was sorry that it’s not a real place, as I’d have liked to visit. It really drew me into the world the author created
I’ve never read any of this author’s work before. Based on this book, I would read more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for my free advanced copy. This review is my own honest opinion.
A charming book about a bookstore in a lighthouse that is located far inland in a small village full of interesting characters with their own stories to tell.
What a lovely book about life, books and most of all people and how they deal with what life throws at them. It is also about community and how people pull together in times where it is needed.
This book also has a bit of an historical aspect about it, about a family from the past and the secrets of their lives and loves and of the lighthouse, of course. The story revolves around a number of people not just one or two and each of these characters brought a different aspect to the story. They are each unique yet they seem to have many things in common.
This is a well written book that flows smoothly through the lives of the characters, it is easy to follow and I just kept reading so I could find out how it all turned out. With secrets, mystery, romance, a bit of fun and a sense of belonging, this book brings a story together, people together and you can imagine living in a community like this.
A great read and highly recommend it.
A easy read with romance and beautiful settings. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this style of book
As delicious, refreshing and comforting a tale as a bowl of summer fruit or a favourite hot pudding in winter.
Once again, Sharon has delivered a timeless piece of telling that gently conveyed the essence of the characters and their lives. Rounded, yet flawed, as we ourselves are, each part in this tale delivers charm, sass, wit, fear and insight into a plotline that is, I think, unique. Centred around a 'folly' of the title, which itself hides secrets beyond the obviousness of its unlikely presence, the story unfolds and grows in a delightfully organic way, as the best writing and tales should.
Whilst adult books are not my usual stomping ground, preferring puddles, cosy mysteries, and Middle Grade reads as befits my age, this is a most welcome, engaging exception. It is, however, not a child's book, far from it. Sharon's writing is to be applauded and wholly recommended for both MG and adult readers looking for quality and adventure.
I enjoyed every minute of this book and hope you will too.
A very enjoyable, easy warm read with a delightful set of characters. Love the setting of a book shop in a lighthouse and the mystery and secrets surrounding it. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the advance review e copy.
The Lighthouse Bookshop is a beautiful book, with lots of delightful characters and a number of story threads.
Rachel works at the titular bookshop, and when the owner suddenly passes away, finds herself having to run the shop while new owners are located. During this time, she is caught up in the wonder of the lighthouse - I won't give away what she finds, but there is a romantic story to follow, and a historical mystery. There is also a fabulous set of supporting characters, who have their own stories, interlinking with Rachel.
The book made me laugh, cry and get angry - I love a book that makes me go through a range of emotions, and this one certainly did that. Definitely one to recommend.
