I'm a very big fan of Heidi Perks. So many thanks for allowing me to read this arc.
As normal for Heidi full of twists and turns. Keeps you guessing until the end
We all go on holiday a people watch don't We? This is that and much more. . Seriously couldn't put this one down. ..
A must read by this superb author
5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This certainly wasn’t her best I found it very mediocre. Laila and James are on holiday in Greece trying to get their marriage on track after having lots of IVF treatment as Laila is desperate for a baby.
While sunbathing by the pool she can’t stop watching another family to the point of obsession because they look so happy with two lovely sons which Laila desperately wants then one of the sons is found dead murdered, there are a lot of twists to this story so will definitely keep you on your toes.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC
In attempts to make their marriage work, Liana and James go on holiday to an exclusive hotel set on an exotic island in Greece. Liana is a people watcher and engaged in what other holiday makers are doing. When a body is found in the hotel swimming pool she becomes concerned about what is going on.
The story begins on Day 6 of the holiday, with flashbacks giving more details leading up to the incident. James seems to have changed during their stay, following his own interests and becoming abrupt. Dynamics and tensions within other families staying at the hotel are explored, and all is not as it seems.
With police investigations, secrets are exposed as the story unfolds, keeping you turning the pages, and the characters are well drawn. Although the book started at a steady pace, it slowed as the story unfolded and I felt that the ending was drawn out.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book.
I liked how no one and nothing were what they seemed in this book.
Plot was more surprising than I expected with lots of twists and interesting characters. I loved the setting of the story, felt as though I was there! and found it a compelling thriller with some surprises at the end!
I quite enjoyed this book. Laila and James arrive on holiday on a Greek island to try and get their marriage back on track. Sitting by the pool Laila becomes obsessed with watching Em and her family of 2 teenaged boys. Em is clearly not interested in forming any holiday friendships. Then a body is found in the pool and all their world's are torn apart. But Laila believes that a conversation she overheard could be crucial to finding out what happened. This is a good story but I didn't really warm to the characters. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
Fast paced storyline. Twists and turns throughout keeps you guessing to the end.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book. This was an excellent read.
Thoroughly recommended
The other guest is so very similar to another book that I have recently read, the plot, characters, holiday setting, police enquiry etc etc just felt too samey!
The three couples all had their own issues, infertility, jilted bride, family relationships, when they become embroiled with a tragic accident at the resort, the police investigation, revelations, secrets, all seem quite drawn out and the conclusion quite unsatisfactory I felt, however if I hadn’t read the other book first then I think I would have found this one more enjoyable.
Thank you netgalley for this early read
I am fan of Heidi Parks and I thought this would be better than anticipated. The story as relationships and drama, but I feel I was expecting more.
The concept and subject matter of The Other Guest had me hooked all the way through. Though it was quite a slow burner, the character development was great and the interesting trajectory of their journeys made up for the sometimes lacking pace. In the last third of the book, it sped up and I enjoyed the mini cliff hangers at the end of each character's segments.
I didn't predict whodunnit (I was convinced it was someone else entirely) which I was impressed by, but thought the ending was slightly less rewarding or explosive than I had hoped, therefore I give it 4*
Fast-paced crime novel.. interesting main character who overhears something she shouldn't while on a luxury holiday, real page-turner
Initially, I was very excited to read this book as I am a fan of Heidi Perks. This storyline had great potential. However, I felt it was a bit bland. I didn't find myself shocked or excited to find out what was going to happen. Unfortunately this book did not grip me as much as I would have liked.
Thank you to Heidi Perks, NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This was an enjoyable and, at times, gripping read but all the way through I was thinking ‘Who is the other guest?’. A minor thing, but surely the title should be The Other Guests or The Other Holidaymakers? The plot revolved around more than one person. In any case, the cover did not seem to match the narrative. Anyway, the story is about relationships and secrets and it was an interesting read that kept me going because I just had to know who had done it! I have to say though that I found the end a bit disappointing and was left with a lot of loose ends. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy in return for an honest review.
Have you ever been on holiday after a really busy time at work and home and then suddenly you’re on holiday and you don’t know what to do with yourself because your busy life has come to a complete stop. So you get interested in what’s going on around you and what the other guests are doing. Does that sound familiar. This book portrays that so well with extra threads on top. So I loved it.
The general idea for this book was good but I found it the story too drawn out, the characters dreary - and every one has problems of one sort or another.
Because it could have been a good book with less angst, more relatable characters and shorter, I give it 3 stars
Laila and her husband travel to Greece for a much needed break from their fertility problems, but she finds herself getting obsessed by a family staying at their resort. Soon things will take a shocking turn and Laila will feel like she must step in and help, but what if she gets it wrong? A thrilling story of families, secrets and lies, this book kept me gripped all the way through. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
This is a story about relationships and communication. It’s also about communication failure and a lack of trust in the relationship.
It felt to me like a holiday read. The themes are serious but the story feels lightweight and lacks depth.
The accident happens at the beginning and reveals the cracks between the two main characters but I found myself irritated by the actions of the wife.
A nice book to read on a sun lounger!
Laila and James have been trying for years to have a baby. After several failed rounds of IVF James says he has had enough. Instead, he spends thousands of pounds on a surprise holiday on a remote Greek island. Laila is unhappy and from the start of the holiday becomes obsessed with the lives of her fellow guests, particularly a family with two sons. James is acting out of character. This novel is about secrets and lies. Will we know the whole truth in the end? I found the jumping backward and forwards in time rather confusing but apart from that, I enjoyed this novel.
This is a perfect summer read. I really enjoyed it. James arranges a luxurious holiday on a Greek island for himself and his wife Laila but it doesn’t turn out to be the relaxing break that they both desperately need. Laila becomes fascinated by some of the other guests, whose lives seem on the surface to be more perfect than her own. There’s lots of tension and intrigue, plenty of secrets and lies, interesting characters, all in a stunning location. I felt transported to Greece and was immersed in the story from beginning to end. A wonderful holiday page turner. Five stars!
I really enjoyed the latest thriller from author Heidi Perks. Some really good characters and an intriguing plot make this a very exciting read.
Laila and James are on holiday in Greece, their relationship is in need of some attention but unfortunately Laila seems to be more interested in watching other guests. Sitting by the pool her eyes are constantly watching the interactions of a family, so much in fact that when one of the family ends up dead she has information that would help the police investigation.
There are quite a few twists in this one and I found it to be a very enjoyable read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Random House UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
