A parent's worst nightmare is losing their child. Especially when you've done everything that you can to provide a safe environment for your children. The moment Rachel lost her son Billy I was GRIPPED to this book. I had no idea who could've taken her son or why. Was he going to come home alive or were the police going to find his body ?
Allison ran away from Oak Hill, this supposed 'Perfect Neighborhood' , seemingly from the disappointments of so many failed pregnancies. Hiding out in New York at her friend's apartment Allison is just trying to move on from her past.
Cassie is a high school senior who coincidentally was late to babysit Billy on the day of his disappearance, so all eyes are on her. Oak Hill is a town that revels in gossip and Cassie has lost the trust of her neighbors for whom she usually babysits for. Everyone wants to know why Cassie was late on the day she was meant to be babysitting.
I enjoyed that this book kept me guessing up until MAYBE the last 20 minutes worth of story, If you're in the market for a good gripping mystery, this is a book that should be added to your list.
When is anything ever what it seems? From the outside looking in, everything is perfect. This books is a hefty reminder that it isn’t.
The story starts off well and actually carries on right through to the end. The author has created a well written book that has enough twists in it to keep you, the reader, interested.
Overall, this is one that I would recommend to others.
Thank you to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for my arc.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I was surprised by the twists and the ending. There were a couple loose ends I would have liked cleared but but they didn't negatively effect the book, more just things I was curious about. I would definitely recommend this book. I could not put it down.
Gripping and suspenseful! Great book about a five year old that goes missing and a wife that leaves her rock star husband. Everything is not what it appears in the neighborhood
How does a 5 year old boy just disappear from a family neighbourhood? And where was his babysitter at the time? Or the boy’s family?
And how does a second child go missing from the same neighbourhood a few weeks later? What connects the two - could it be that the same babysitter was involved with both of the missing children? Or is there a link with the woman who mysteriously left her husband one night and hasn’t been seen since?
Told by a number of narrators at different points in the story, this book kept me on my toes. I suspected every character and none of them at different times.
Despite the potential for distress (missing children) this book was a great read.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read and review.
A gripping read with a compelling storyline and well developed characters. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting.
A gripping story of a so-called perfect neighborhood with an unthinkable crime. This one kept me guessing right to the end! Thank you for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
Didn’t live up to my expectations. It’s a easy read but lacks something to make it more than just okay.
I need more from my domestic noirs
Good try,
A celebrity living in the suburbs, who goes missing would definitely get the neighborhood talking. And what happens when a young boy goes missing next? It’s a safe, upper-class neighborhood in NJ, what is going on? The Perfect Neighborhood by Liz Alterman centers around secrets, gossip, and drama in the ‘hood. Told through multiple points of view, I thought this was an entertaining and quick read.
PLOT:
When actress Allison Langley leaves her former rock star husband in the middle of the night, her sudden departure becomes the talk of upmarket Oak Hill. But the relentless gossip comes to an abrupt halt when five-year-old Billy Barnes disappears on his walk home from kindergarten. Is there a predator lurking in the leafy suburb? Weeks later, three-year-old Amy-Pat Davies vanishes from her backyard. In addition to sharing a zip code, the missing children have another thing in common – their babysitter, Cassidy McLean, who has a secret of her own.
Out now!
Loved this from the first to the last page! I was hooked immediately. I hope to read more from Liz Alterman.
Fake people judging each other. Fake smiles. Fake sympathy. Who's leaving? Who's not up to the standards of the block? Everyone is gossip fodder in a small neighborhood and fingers are pointed all around when not one child, but two go missing.
This book is just the right amount of thriller & reality rolled together to create a terrifying situation for any mother. Blame & guilt create a layer of heavy clouds over a couple of families while others are speculating behind their backs.
Alterman does a great job of keeping the reader engaged in the story, while making us want to become detectives in our own right to discover what happened to the two little children who vanished without a trace.
I really enjoy the way Liz Alterman writes! The characters are written so well. I enjoyed the multiple POVs but felt like we didn’t need some and could’ve kept to the same 3 main POVs. Loved the cliff hanger ending.
The Perfect Neighborhood is about the facade that a neighborhood wears that covers all of the imperfections everywhere.
A gossip driven town people are consumed with the mystery of the movie star who leaves her rock star husband in the middle of the night. This quickly becomes old news after the disappearance of a 5 year old boy. He vanishes without a trace and both his mother, Rachel, and his babysitter blame themselves. Rachel was working and the babysitter was late. The guilt burns from inside them.
Rachel re-examines her life and the community people that surround her.
No-one can find him and the town soon becomes a tragic one when another child disappears. The police place everyone under suspicion and the search to stop these disappearances grows intense.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC
Thanks for the chance to read this copy. I figured by the cover and the blurb that I knew what I was walking into, but I was surprised in the second half. I figured it would have the Big Little Lies/Mean Girls etc. vibe to it and it did, to an extent. Much was based on the mystery of why the 2 children went missing (and why the wealthy couple-- the actress and the musician-- broke up suddenly.) I didn't care for the reason why it happened, but that is just my personal taste. All in all, you get a mystery and a domestic drama plot all in one. Recommended for the right audience.
Mystery.
Upscale suburban neighborhood.
drama
this is so fun! highly addicting. Had a hard time putting it down. WHile some of this was predictable, I still enjoyed it!
Let me preface my review by saying that I absolutely love a "Perfect Neighborhood" story! This one did not disappoint. It is set in a much-coveted neighborhood where everything seems perfect and as though nothing that can go wrong here. But then a minor celebrity disappears and there is much gossip; then a young boy is snatched and the gossip continues. This is not the end of the happenings! I did not guess the extent of these mysteries until the very end! Loved it!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC!
A suspenseful story about the dark underbelly of an uppercrust suburban neighborhood. Allison is an actress who leaves her has-been musician husband in the dead of night, setting tongues wagging. Cassidy is a teenage babysitter with secrets to hide who arrives late to watch over a 5 year old who has gone missing between leaving school and arriving home. Rachel is a working mom suffering from guilt after her son goes missing, in a troubled marriage to a man with a jerky son. Sarah is another mom whose 3 year old daughter goes missing later on and whose babysitter is also Cassidy. The novel is mostly told from the points of view of these four females, with occasional sprinklings from other neighborhood women. It is not as delightfully snarky as I was expecting, it’s more of a suspenseful mystery, but I was glued to the novel and raced through it to find out what was going on and who was responsible.

Really enjoyable read totally recommend

I just reviewed The Perfect Neighborhood by Liz Alterman. #ThePerfectNeighborhood #NetGalley
A bit too predictable. Elements that seriously made my skin crawl--not in a good way. Yuck! Choppy and disjointed writing. This wasn't my cup of tea.
If you live for mystery embroiled in upscale suburban drama, this is the perfect novel for you!
Oak Hill is an affluent neighbourhood where residents’ day-to-day consists of making sure that their kids are invited to playdates, volunteering (or rather, getting forced to volunteer) in school events, and chasing the next big gossip in their otherwise sleepy town. Everything changed when 5-year old Billy disappeared on his way home from school.
The mystery of Billy’s disappearance is peppered with whispers and gossips, and slowly unfolds from the perspective of our five narrators, namely:
- Rachel, the mother of the missing child, Billy
- Allison, wife of a rock star, and was recently rumoured to have left her husband
- Cassidy, babysitter of Billy, who arrived late the day Billy disappeared
- Lindsay and Sarah, two other moms in Oak Hill
As expected, the characters in the novel have their own theories regarding who could have taken Billy, and some of these would even spread like wildfire - which may or may not lead the police to unraveling the truth…
Overall, The Perfect Neighborhood was such a fun and modern “whodunit” and I definitely enjoyed getting caught up in the Oak Hill moms’ and dads’ web of suburban drama! On a more serious note, this novel also highlighted the importance of protecting our loved ones and the consequences of not doing so.
5 stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
