Absolutely amazing !!!! Awesome book full of twists on every chapter I would defo reccomend this book to someone!!!!possibly one of my fave authors:)
SHE INVITED HIM IN, NOW SHE CAN’T GET HIM OUT…
This book caught my eye because I watched a documentary about tenants refusing to move out and it’s crazy. The protagonist (Donna) has a chance at a new start and moves across the country to live in the house her grandmother left her. The only problem is, she needs more money to pay her bills. To fix this, she searches for a roommate. At first, the roommate she chooses (Joshua) seems wonderful. She feels like she found not only a roommate, but a friend. She soon starts dating a guy and things between them are going well, until Joshua turns into a nightmare of a roommate. Joshua refuses to pay rent, but Donna can’t get him to leave. The characters were both odd. The plot was interesting but I felt there was a lot of unnecessary dialogue and a few unbelievable situations. There are some surprises at the end which I enjoyed. It wasn’t great and it wasn’t terrible. It was okay—3 stars. I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher.

I really didn't like this book. I almost didn't finish it but I wanted to know how it ended. The relationship between Donna and Joshua was far-fetched and not realistic in my opinion. I also thought Donna's character was rude. The plot was kind of jumping around which made it hard to follow along and keep my interest. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
This just wasn't for me. The storyline itself held a great deal of potential, but the writing didn't vibe with me and the characters situations and reactions just didn't ring true. Who lets someone live with them and then does nothing when that person's actions become so outlandish and intrusive. Even I'm not that much of a doormat!!!
I enjoyed the concept of this book, especially knowing that this squatter-roommate situation frequently happens in real life. The writing, however, left something to be desired -- I'm not sure exactly what, but the book seemed like it spent too much time on some details and not enough on others. The first three-quarters or so were very slow moving, then suddenly and graphically sped up, before wrapping up with what felt like a "Where are they now" segment at a movie's end.
It's more of a sad book than a true thriller, but despite my issues with the writing I still wanted to know what happened to each character, and to the house.
I tried to like this book, but the writing was choppy and none of the characters were likable. Like none. I thought about DNFing this a lot, but wanted to see how it ended. I seem to do this a lot with domestic thrillers, so I don’t know why I keep picking them up. Anyway, I did watch a true crime story about a squatter which resembled this story BUT some of the events still seemed a bit farfetched. Holy shit at the ending! Like I saw it coming, but didn’t expect it to play out like it did.
Could not finish this one even though I tried multiple times & really wanted to. It was a bit disjointed at times & didn’t have any character development.
''It’s almost impossible to wrap her brain around the fact that this place is hers. A gift she never expected but it’s come just when she needs it most. Donna was wondering where her life was going — a dead-end job in Chicago, an unhappy family life, no boyfriend. But inheriting a beautiful, blue-painted house from her grandmother in California offers a fresh start. And now she’s found the perfect roommate to help her pay the bills. Joshua keeps the fridge stocked with delicious fresh food. They watch cooking shows together and stay up watching late-night movies. He’s not just a roommate, he’s a friend, and soon Donna can’t imagine life without him. But Donna tries to ignore the doubts she begins to have. Why does he have a key to the side door? And what’s that smell coming from his room?''
I really tried to like this one but it's a no for me. The caractehers are really hard to enjoy and even understand... Donna has a simple issue to solve but she keeps messing everything up and it's impossible to feel bad for her when she's not putting effort. Joshua is simply the worst, really bad and just awful. The writing is not pleasant to me, the plot itself it made me so awkward and uncomfortable. I wish I liked this one but it's a no for me.
Thank you #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #CarolineMaconFleisher for my ARC of #TheRoommate in exchange for an honest review.
Donna inherits a house from her estranged grandma in California. She takes this opportunity to start fresh but when she arrives things are off. Donna decides she needs to find a roommate when she meets Joshua Flowers. He seems like they will become great friends and make a great temporary roommate. The longer Joshua is there the weirder things get and Donna starts to get a weird feeling. There is bad tension and she just wants him out!
This story is from Donna’s point of view, very mysterious, and spooky. It is pretty fast paced and you just want to piece everything together and find out what Joshua is hiding and what is going to happen! Overall the book was a great read! Thank you to the Netgalley and to Joffre Books for a copy of this to read.
I started this book and wasn't too sure so checked the blurb again and thought "no, I do want to read this" and boy am I glad I carried on. After a slow start the story starts to twist more and more... Absolutely gripping!!
This book really didn’t go how I expected and was very different with quite a unique theme that made it very intriguing. It’s a book that really plays on your emotions and it’s hard to completely like any of the characters, however they all have their own story. A good read and I would recommend it.
Absolutely fantastic! This book tied me in knots. I started out thinking one way, then another, back to the first and then the end, and by then my head was spinning. What a twisty story. Loved it, would highly highly recommend. The highlight of the book has to be the brilliant storytelling – it was unbelievably unsettling and unputdownable at once.
I found this story quiet dark in places but I did enjoy it, full of twists and plenty of suspense in it ..
Book has the perfect atmosphere. I didn't find any of the characters likable and sometimes the writing was a over the place but I did enjoy the story. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book

A great read. Full of suspense, fast-paced plenty of intrigue. Recommended.
Donna inherits a house and rents a room out to someone she doesn't know. strange things began to happen, very scary story.
Donna inherits a great home in California and she is ready to make a new start. But, she is lonely and broke so she decides to rent out one of the bedrooms. Joshua responds to her ad almost immediately. The two hit it off and they settle into a codependency type of relationship. Then things change, Joshua is hiding something, his room smells and something is making noise in the wall. Donna doesn’t want to go home but she can’t just abandon the home, it was her grandmothers. It has now been six months and Joshua says he is now an owner of the house and has rights. He isn’t paying rent anymore and she can no longer have friends over.
The Roommate is dark and disturbing. Joshua is creepy. Why to squatters have rights if the home isn’t even in their name? This is a hard to put down domestic thriller. I keep cringing as I read. I will never look for a roommate on Craig’s list. That is for sure!
My sincere thank you to Joffe Books and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this intense thriller!
2 stars because this was a quick, easy read. But overall, I was not a fan. I found the main character’s actions completely unrealistic. No one would put up with what she did from this “roommate”. The writing was not great, the author would just state things that seemed to come out of nowhere without explaining them. For example, this sentence “Donna blamed herself for thinking Cole was bland.” When did she ever say he was bland? So many instances like this throughout the book. And the ending was pretty gross.
Thank you netgalley for the advanced reader copy!
I took off three stars because there was no true character development. Without that, a novel usually cannot move or entertain people regardless of how good the plot or idea is. I didn’t really know or understand the character’s fears, past, dreams etc. The writing quality was not the best either.
I enjoyed the general theme of not knowing who you end up with when you choose a roommate and how it can seem like the best match and quickly become a nightmare…
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of The Roommate by Caroline Macon Fleischer. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Netgalley and Joffe Books for providing an ARC to review.
This book stressed me the heck out. It was already creepy having a psychotic stalker as the female lead's roommate. But her actions made me even more stressed. If there were a book on the worst way to deal with a horrible roommate, then this would be it. I legit hated every character except Donna's boyfriend, whom I felt pity for. Donna was so annoying and indecisive, and none of her decisions regarding her squatter made sense. Even to the very end of the book, I felt nothing but annoyance for her. If you are looking for a book that makes you feel trapped then you should try The Roommate. I give The Roommate 3/5 stars.
