I absolutely LOVE this book!!!! Its fun and its beautifully written. I thought this would be like the like the dragon movies, How to Train your Dragon but it wasn't. Close but not enough to day its the same. This book is so sweet and it had me on the edge of MT seat in a couple places. Children would love this series from the get go. I know I did and my son would absolutely agree with me. Must read for children who love the idea of dragons in books.

Dragons and middle grade are a combination that was always going to grab my attention. Though when I requested the book I didn't realize this was going to be a chapter book which isn't nessecarily what I would normally pick up.

This book is a chapter book of about 40 pages and it is really short. That has its good and bad bits.

The good is that I think that this will more easily appeal to the kids (and specifically boys) who struggle with reading. It is short, quick and to the point. If they are going to have to read for school this is quite excellent to do its job and grab them.

But the bad is that there was no room for ANY worldbuilding. We just get thrown in and there is no explanation of a lot of things. There is no room to build out any character. There is only action, action. Little description. I think its a choice because I have seen other chapter books be able to do this still. But I think that is why this book would not appeal to the kid that is a more average reader.

This middle grade or early chapter book tells the story of David and his friends as he tries to join the dragon club. There are many adventures in store for David in the 9 short chapters of this book, and this is only the first in the series! Chapters are about 2-5 pages long and often include a black and white illustration. The font is nicely spaced and not overwhelmingly small or difficult to read. Dragons are a really popular topic for middle graders and I think that young readers who are just ready to start reading chapterbooks will love this new series. I could definitely see my grade 3 students enjoying this book and would recommend it to parents and teachers of children who are ready for slightly longer stories and novels, and who are in the age 7-11 range. This is a light, quick late elementary read that introduces the main characters and their dragons. It is obviously a set up for a series, and wojld be a good start for kids who love the How to Train your dragon movies, but aren't quite ready for the books or for the Wings of Fire series,

The pictures of the kids with their dragons were great. Each dragon fit that kid. This was a quick read. The chapters are short, so I think most kids could read this in one sitting.

What worked:
The pace of the book is very rapid which should appeal to reluctant readers. The chapters are short and include illustrations of the characters and their dragons, and the whole thing can be read in one sitting. The plot follows David and his dragon Moonlight, as David hopes to join the elite Dragon Flyers team. He must learn everything in the “Dragon Book of Secrets” before applying for membership. He then participates in his first act as a new member, and this whole story is completed in under 60 pages.
The characters and dragons are quite interesting despite limited descriptions. David is surprised to learn the Dragon Flyers are led by a girl, but he’s happy to become a member alongside his best friend Joe. The individual dragons have unique powers that are very useful when upholding the Dragon Flyers Motto: defenders of right, righters of wrong. David’s dragon is able to control moonlight, while another one is able to hide using camouflage. The first adventure involves rescuing one of their comrades.
What didn’t work as well:
The problem with a book this short is it leaves out details concerning the characters and plots. Little time is given to a backstory, so readers are thrown right into the action from the beginning. We’re left wondering about the world happening beyond David’s location, how David became paired with a dragon, and exactly who the Dragon Flyers are defending.
The Final Verdict:
Working together as a team. The premise of the book is great, especially having dragons with unique abilities working together. More description and details would make this book meatier, as it feels like it’s over just as it gets started. I know there are at least two more books in the series, so I recommend reading them all at the same time.

Great action packed dragon story with pictures! Perfect for kids. Quick read. Really enjoyable to read.
