Wonderfully illustrated and retold as always, although this one isn’t my favourite of them all unfortunately! I felt like it lacked some of the fun and intrigue of the others.
** “Holmes’ manner can appear unusual to those who don’t know him, but I’ve generally found there’s method in his madness.” **
Alex Woolf retells “The Reigate Squires,” an Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes short story about a case that reminds us to pay attention to all clues, no matter how small.
While Sherlock is recovering from an illness, he gets drawn into a case involving feuding neighbors, burglaries and murder. With his special skills, and ability to assume nothing (“It’s always been my custom to assume nothing and test everything”), Holmes sets out to determine why one neighbor’s coachman is killed and the mystery of the slip of paper found in his hand.
“The Reigate Squires” is a fun detective story that reminds us that our prejudices can blind us to the truth and to always follow every lead.
Filled with delightful illustrations by Eve O’Brien, “The Reigate Squires” is told in a fun and easy way kids of all ages will understand. This series is a great way to introduce young readers to Doyle and the great Sherlock Holmes, but adults will also enjoy these short stories. The story slowly lays out the clues, allowing the reader to solve the mystery alongside Sherlock.
Five stars out of five.

I enjoy each of the installments in this series, but I will say that this one wasn’t my favorite. The mystery itself wasn’t that enticing, but the addition of a Sherlock who is faking some medical issues did help liven it up. Each book in the series is worth a read. I love Sherlock Holmes in any form, and bringing it to a younger audience is exciting!
This may not be the most known of Sherlock's cases, but it was unexpectedly better than I was expecting! Sometimes, the least known stories are the most complicated.
Poor Sherlock can't catch a break even when he's supposed to be holidaying in the countryside to take care of his health. Or rather, once a hound always a hound, and he's too much of one to resist the temptation of solving a murder case when he's supposed to be relaxing with friends. This murder is more difficult than the previous ones I read, with more twists, and so few clues if any that I wasn't able to guess the solution. That was the best part for me, not being able to predict the solution to a crime, because often I can. And, of course, the illustrations have grown on me even though I tend to not take much notice of this specific children's picture book style. 4.5 stars.
Sherlock Holmes at his best, on full form and launching into a murder mystery which has everyone stumped. It’s no problem for this consulting detective though, as he’s assigned to the case despite Watson’s cautions.
A seemingly innocent holiday to rejuvenate Sherlocks health and spirits turns into an unexpected case starting with a burglary. This trip was meant to be some time off for the detective on Watsons orders, but he can’t resist getting involved when he sees the police at odds to discovering who the culprit is.
I always marvel at his deducing skills and method of solving his cases and this book is a fantastic example of Sherlock Holmes at his best. Fantastically adapted and illustrated (as with all of the others in this series) and a really enjoyable read for old, young and all who want a bit of murder mystery and Sherlock Holmes action.
Thank you so much to Arcturus and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Holmes has been working too hard and became sick, to help him relax and feel better Watson takes him to a friends place in the country. His rest is disturbed almost instantly as news of a burglary and death crop up, in which Holmes cannot resist a chance at solving the case.
I really enjoyed this one a lot it was a long winded unexpected and twisty case and I always enjoy these ones the most. It was such a strange case with a small amount of clues, a ripped note, a few random things stolen and a coachman murdered. It was so interesting and hard to really get the facts in order.
Holmes being the genius he was figured out everything much quicker than anyone else did and knew where to look for the evidence he was missing. His mind is insane and I don’t know how he thinks the way he does.
This was a really great book in the series and I enjoyed reading it. I always highly recommend these books the mysteries are always so much fun, they are condensed so are much easier to read and there are illustrations throughout.
As I already wrote in a review for another book in this series this is an excellent work that can be appreciated by children and adult.
The artwork is lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I love the original Sherlock Holmes stories and am thrilled that I can read these with my younger readers! So much fun and true to the originals but made into a story that kids and teens can follow easier. Grab the entire series!!
This is my first introduction to “The Reigate Squires,” having never read the original Arthur Conan Doyle short story. While I can’t compare it to the original, I very much enjoyed Alex Woolf’s adaptation, and I’m sure kids will, too.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Arcturus Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Another stellar volume in this abridged Sherlock Holmes series, thanks to Arcturus and Netgalley. Two successive break-ins/attempted robberies at the houses of prominent Reigate residents, and the murder of a coachman at one of the houses -- Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be on vacation to recover his health, but is called in to investigate. A torn part of a note is found in the dead coachman's hand, but Sherlock does not seem to be his usual sharp self! He collapses suddenly, mistakes the time of the crime, knocks things over, etc., to Dr Watson's amazement and the irritation of the others. But could Holmes actually be on a trail that no one else has realized? The narration and pictures are perfectly done and will keep young readers hooked on solving the mystery.
I am absolutely devouring this series, I have fallen in love with the simple way each mystery has been adapted with fun illustrations and a well adapted storyline!
The Reigate Squires by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Alex Wool.f
A coach driver has been murdered ... and it looks like the killer is going to get away with their terrible crime. The only clue is a torn piece of paper in the victim's hand, with a few words written on it. With the help of this single tiny clue, can our legendary sleuth unravel the mystery?
A great short story for young readers.i love sherlock Mysteries. I love the illustrations. 5*.
Dr. Watson has convinced an exhausted Sherlock Holmes to a relaxing stay in the country. Unfortunately for Watson, this plan will backfire on him when Sherlock becomes involved in a small crime wave. A good example of the Detective at work.
This was a short, simple adaptation of a classic Sherlock Holmes short story.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book for review.
A wonderful abridged version of the classic Sherlock Holmes short story The Reigate Squires, capturing the narrative and spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work brilliantly. Holmes is recovering from illness and Watson takes him for a restful stay at the house of a friend in Reigate. But crimes seem to follow Holmes everywhere and there is no peace and quiet for him! A recent burglary at a local squire's house, followed by the murder of a coachman at the house of another squire in the area, prompts Holmes to take a closer look. Could there be a connection between the two crimes? Where is the rest of the ripped note that was found clenched in the murdered coachman's fist? Are the squires all telling the truth? This book includes cartoonish illustrations that capture the plot and characters nicely and will be sure to an extra layer of entertainment for young readers as they follow Sherlock Holmes in getting to the bottom of the mysteries in Reigate. This entire series will be an excellent introduction for kids to Conan Doyle's classic stories, and will hopefully inspire them to read the originals as well! I will certainly be recommending this series to my young mystery-loving students as a next step from the Famous Five and Secret Seven books.
Great short story written so as to be suitable for a younger audience but still containing all the key elements of the story. The illustrations are charming too and add much to the book.
The Reigate Squires By Alex Woolf and Arthur Conan Doyle
This is a retelling of the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery but told in an easier format for children and they are also illustrated by Eve O'Brien.
I really like the retellings of Sherlock Holmes as
I think the older classics can be hard to read and these books make it easier to appreciate..
This is a great story.. and one that I have never read in its original form, this one was about the murder of a servant after a break in where unusual household items were taken, it was not my favourite story and was quite obvious who the murder was and why but it was still enjoyable.
The books are pithy and they are a faithful retelling of the classic story, these books are a great accompaniment to the original stories
