I just did not like this, not at all.
couldn't get into it and I'm genuinely the biggest advocate for enemies to lovers that ever existed.
both Ian and Jenny are so annoying it hurts. i don't know if it's because of the language or because they're genuinely that annoying but yea no, not for me at all. this also made me realize i hate audiobooks? like idk if the narrator was just not good or if it's like not my preferred method of consuming media, but yea no this felt exhausting to get through. don't think I'll do another audiobook again.
I enjoyed the audiobook of this translated novel though I didn't love Ian's character all that much. The fake dating and romance between the two was sweet and I loved the ending.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an audiobook of Love to Hate You by Anna Premoli. I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The slow burn was frustrating and yet I loved every moment of it! The audiobook narrator was great at building the atmosphere with this novel and I’d definitely recommend. And this novel has all of my favourite tropes in one! 4⭐️
Tropes include:
- Enemies to lovers
- Set in the workplace
- Slow-burn
- One-bed trope
- Fake Dating
I love a good Enemies to lovers romance and a 'will they won't they' kind of plot. This certain met that metric! It was one of those insanely entertaining 'they absolutely hate each other but they slowly start to draw closer' storylines and it made for one really addicting book. It also helped that the audiobook I had was brilliantly narrated and made it effortless to slip into.
The banter in this book was also great. I love a book with banter, especially between the romance interests and it was hilariously funny at times. Their barbed comments, snidey remarks and plain insults they hurled at each other, both in the workplace and out, was hilarious and I honestly had no idea how they could come to be together (if indeed they would!).
You were kept constantly guessing, wondering if they would start to open up to each other or say locked in their familiar patterns of hate. Their families are worlds apart, they belong to distinctly different classes and theirs is a rivalry that dates back years (and a broken nose) later, can they resolve to find a way to love each other? The title 'Love to Hate you' couldn't be more fitting!
I loved the writing too and it was so easy to immediately warm to and enjoy. It ticked all the boxes for a lovely, contemporary romance read.
I am not sure how to review this book as I liked it but I had some problems with it.
What I liked:
- It felt like a Pride and Prejudice retelling, especially when the grandfather entered the scene with his demands.
- Loved the use of the enemies-to-lovers trope as well as the fake dating, the one bed and the drunken male character showing his emotional side.
- How they were both clearly in denial and had some good banter.
- How the Italian (born in Croatia, grew up in Italy) author was able to write of non-Italian characters.
- There was definitely a good chemistry between the characters, especially at the beginning of the story.
What I didn’t like:
- I understand Ian was a nobleman and felt a bit entitled due to his upbringing… but he felt pushy. Jenny told him plenty of times to leave her alone and - I understand she didn’t actually wanted him to stop - I would have rather him asking her, at least once, for her consent.
- Her friends were the worse. Not only they didn’t have much of a personality and only served the purpose to interrupt the situation and give the reader more of a slow burn kind of feeling, but to me there was no reason for Jenny to like them enough to keep living with them. I guess that they would have helped the story more if they gave Jenny some counsel or helped her on an emotional level. It feels they didn’t play the part the right way.
- There was no resolution with the family in the end.
- The romance part of the relationship has a bit of a stereotype vibe. Foreigners see British as uptight and not in tune with their feelings and, especially toward the end of the book, they both feel very emotionally constipated. I would have prefer Jenny to get more in tune with her feelings once she had that revelation during lunch with her brother.
I have to give it 3 stars because I think consent is important, especially today, and it would have not been difficult to add it in without damaging Ian’s character.
Reminiscent of the Hating Game and The Spanish Love Deception. Workplace enemies to lovers romance was fun to read and I really enjoyed it.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.
Jennifer and lan have been working together for 7 years and they are known to disagree to pretty much everything until they are forced to. This book reminded me a little of the hating game and I really enjoyed this story. The audiobook was great and overall I give it 5 stars
Ian and Jennifer are co-workers (already you got me there) but they hate eachother (if you didn't have me before, this snagged me). I am here for a good enemies to lovers office romance and this delivered. Ian and Jennifer have been at odds with one another since Jennifer was given the position they were both in the running for. After an unfortunate blow up four years ago, the two of them just shouldn't work together.
Until a client asks for both of them to work on his account and they have to learn to play nice. Ian is royalty and will be a duke. He has women falling all over themselves just to have a chance with him, but that isn't Jenny and it is refreshing to him. When a photo of the two of them is leaked to the press, Ian has an idea that he can keep all the other women off his back if he pretends that he is with Jenny.
Jenny doesn't think this will work, but she is willing to go along with it. Right from the start I believe that Ian wanted something more from Jenny but was just to scared to admit it. Jenny has been sabotaging relationships for as long as she can remember but isn't sure why. Maybe it is because she hasn't met the right one, the one that challenges her to stay.
Ian and Jenny have a lot of ups and downs. They have a lot of obstacles to overcome (social standing and rank and mostly their families who despise this union), but in the end we have to look at what and who matters most.
I really enjoyed this audio and I thought the narrator did a great job bringing these two to life.
Thank you to Netgalley and Anna Permoli for an audio review copy.
Thank you Netgalley and Saga Egmont Audio for a lovely audio.
When I started to read this I was not really hooked in an instant but I had a feeling I could start to like the book. And I was right, I felt in love with the blue eyes I have not seen but just listened to them. It was a simple enemy to lovers story but with something more. More and more I listened more I loved the main characters. I loved the conversations they had and how the shilt went down and... I have not noticed it was an italian writer but I would put this story in Tuscany right away, do not ask me why but I saw them there.
I am in love again and want to read more books by this author. Love the love that was hiden and how it come out, the tender words and sincere, respectful the love was or better say is.
The only think I regret is that I have not read this book in italian.
