I very much enjoyed the Freida Klein books and also many of the earlier stand alone novels from this crime writing duo. Unfortunately I can’t say the same about this latest offering.
Jude, the main character, is a hospital doctor who is just about to leave work when a visitor from her past appears. This is Liam her first boyfriend who she hasn’t seen for eleven years. He asks her to do him rather an odd favour, which would have most of us running for the hills or at least questioning him more to find out exactly what is going on even when we discover later in the book that she has her reasons for agreeing to help.
Jude then becomes entangled in Liam’s life and meets a number of unsavory characters who he was involved with.
The problem for me is that Jude comes across as someone who is completely incapable of making decisions.
She shows poor judgement at every turn leading me to think how on earth did she ever become a doctor?
The story seems to take forever to get going and I didn’t find the outcome convincing. Very disappointed.
Many thanks to NetGalley & Simon and Schuster UK for an ARC
I absolutely loved this new book by Nicci French .It is a real page turner and full of surprises. Dr Jude Winter 's first love turns up asking a favour and surprisingly she agrees ,but then he is found murdered and her world is turned upside down as she becomes the prime suspect !The characters are brilliant though not always nice ,I think this is a mystery rather than a thriller .The plot is clever and full of twists and turns and the ending was for a big surprise .Manty thanks to NetGalley for my ARC.
I love anything by Nicci French so knew this would be no exception. I found some of the decisions Jude made to be strange and at times a little unbelievable but it all made for a good read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
Loved loved this book such a suspenseful thriller that’s keeps you wanting to read more , would definitely recommend to readers who like a face paced thriller.
This started off so good, I was hooked by the mystery and the strangeness from the beginning.
I wasn’t fully sold on the main character Jude, I felt there wasn’t much depth to her and often I was confused by who she was and her actions. The storyline did feel quite unique, your ex turns up years later and asks for a favour and Jude doesn’t refuse – that’s not odd or mysterious at all, right? As we follow Jude we learn why she says yes and read as she goes on a weird journey to find the truth, but would someone really go to those lengths?
I got some Family Upstairs vibes midway and the strangeness wasn’t one I could get on board with. Three quarters of the way through I started to feel it was a little drawn out and I was left quite flat by the ending but I feel that is just my perspective.
This was not one of my favourite novels by Nicci French. I enjoyed the first 20% or so but after an initial good impression it failed to keep my interest. I did finish it but found the characters both unlikeable and somewhat unbelievable.
This was everything you need for a thriller and crime story. It is not as black and white as you first think and like most typical thrillers, is full of twists.
The E-Book could be improved and more user-friendly, such as links to the chapters, no significant gaps between words some text written has been typed in red and a cover for the book would be better. It is very document-like instead of a book. A star has been deducted because of this.
This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
The Favour is a phenomenal thriller from start to finish. Nicci French really knows what he's doing. Filled to the brim with twists and a captivating plot, this one is sure to keep readers hooked. The characters are well-developed. The story is incredibly fast-paced. This is one not to be missed! Highly recommended! Be sure to check out The Favour today.
An enjoyable dark read, full of interesting characters, pretty much an edge of your seat kinda read that kept me intrigued
The favour is a dark tale of murder and mistrust.
The book focuses on Jude who is now a doctor, about to be married. Her life is turned upside down when her teenage crush reappears in her life asking for a favour…
None of the characters in this story are likeable, the more you read, the more there is to dislike about any of them!
A dark and twisty tale of revenge, love, trust and murder. At times it felt a little drawn out and is not something to read if you need cheering up! But overall a good but dark read!
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I did guess a few of the twists in this one but it was still a good read which made me think about loyalty
The prolific duo of writers brings yet another police procedural thriller! The storyline is extremely catching, since it is obvious from the get go the protagonist is going to become involved in something sinister as a result of doing the favor that is the crux of this story.
A good deed can turn deadly indeed.
I loved other books by this duo and was looking forward to reading this new instalment. Their stories always grab my attention and the suspense keep me reeling.
Not so much in here unfortunately. I got why she would agree to help him after so many years of unknown and trying to find answers to that what ifs. But the overall story left me wanting for more . I can’t say that I like her fully, nor the other characters.
The ending is definitely worth the time to go through all the slow paced events from the beginning.
Onto the next one because I ,for one , am not giving up to their books.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy
I picked this book up when I was in the middle of a horrible reading slump and this is the first book in ages that immediately grabbed my attention and kept me hooked all the way through. You do need to suspend disbelief but I didn't mind that at all as I got swept up in the story. I did think the main character lacked good judgement which was frustrating at times but having said that I could see how she got swept up in the horror of what was happening to her. I would recommend going into this book a blind as possible, as I did, as the first reveal was such a shock to me and that's what hooked me in.
I’ve read and enjoyed a number of books by this author (pair of authors) so I was happy to receive “The Favour “ as a review copy.
Jude is a hospital doctor working on the geriatric ward when she receives an unexpected visitor just as she is about to go off her shift.
Liam was her first boyfriend, a summer love when she was 18 but an unfortunate event accelerates the break up of their relationship. Whilst Jude goes off to study Medicine, Liam disappears from her life and she never quite gets over him. When he asks her for a favour 11 years later she just cannot say no and when this favour leads her into a difficult situation Jude becomes embroiled in Liam’s messy life.
Jude’s own life then spirals out of control and she doesn’t seem able to extract herself from the situation in which she finds herself.
I found Jude a strange character- she seemed incapable of making the right or even the sensible decision- I couldn’t work out what was motivating her and why she was behaving in such a reckless way.
None of the other characters were particularly likeable either - they all seemed to have dubious backgrounds and were mostly acting in selfish ways which made it difficult to feel empathy for any of them.
In fact I found the whole novel rather bleak- the characters, the setting and the events that occur as the story progresses.
The plot was also quite slow moving with a lot of description which meant that I did skim read a couple of bits in the middle.
All in all it was a readable book but I wouldn’t say I particularly enjoyed it and it certainly wasn’t one of the author’s best.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc.
Overall a good read for me and the characters were all good although I couldn't get on with Jude at all.
It was a well written book and the storyline kept me involved but for me personally it wasn't an edge of seat read.
Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for this ARC.
Nicci French rarely disappoints and the latest is no exception, I wasn't particularly invested in the protagonist but I did find myself drawn into the world of the supporting characters and I thought one of the major twists in the book was very unexpected.
I usually love Nicci French but this was one of those books that I cannot decide whether I liked or not. The premise was good, and I did not guess the ending. It was a bit far fetched at times. and I couldn't relate to the characters as I found them all a bit strange.
Thank you Netgalley and Simon and Schuster for giving me the opportunity to review this book.
I adore Nicci French - their books are always great page-turners.
This book is an absolute rollercoaster! Loads of twists and turns - some a little far fetched at times - but all of them kept me guessing, and all of them kept me gripped!
This plot, and this writing just felt so visual and made me picture the whole thing out in full colour in my head. This would make a great Netflix series!
I thought this book was very predictable. The lead character was very gullible. I read it to the end but I was very frustrated that Jude couldn’t see what was in front of her face! Oh
