I loved this dessert cookbook! The layout and photos are gorgeous and there is a variety of types of recipes to suit different tastes.
I've Read Countless Dessert based Recipe Books in my Life BUT this one Is the Absolute Best I've Ever Read, My Mum & I Have Enjoyed the Some of the Bakes in this Book & Will Recommend this to Everyone.
(Thanks to Net Galley & Claire Saffiz for this Book),
I am disappointed. The cover was promising, but nothing more. The recipes are old-fashioned. It's better to go back to your old baking book from the 70s. I would have expected more. For newcomers in baking, the basic recipes are well listed here. That would be positive to note. Those who bake and cook regularly do not need another recipe of creme brulée or chocolate soufflee
Claire Saffitz’ fantastic new book contains a great variety of scrumptious dessert recipes, including crowd pleasers such as a s’mores tart, crème brûlée and chocolate soufflé, but also less well-known desserts, such as toasted rice sablés and goat milk panna cotta with guava sauce.
Knowing Claire from Bon Appetit and YouTube and her previous book “dessert person”, I was looking forward to reading this book and trying out the new recipes. I particularly liked that she mentions whether the desserts can be made ahead and if a stand mixer is needed. Also very helpful are “potential pitfalls” she mentions for each recipe.
So far, I have made the sugar cookies, which were good and appreciated by my family. I will definitely make the raspberry almond thumbprint cookies, as well as the lemon squiggles, and of course the crème caramel.
A great new addition to my cook book shelf, highly recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley, Claire Saffitz and Murdoch Books for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'What's for Dessert' by Claire Saffitz.
I love Claire Saffitz. I picked this ARC up purely for her and it didn't disappoint. I'm not the best at reviewing cookbooks but this was such a helpful guide for novices and professionals.
Theres a varied range of desserts for people to try with mixed difficulties. Claire also states whether it's gluten free and how long it takes and the serving size. The whole aesthetic of this cookbook is so pleasing to the sights.
I loved this cookbook so so much.
2 stars
The book felt too old fashioned and I don't have a problem with the 70's vibes but I didn't find it inventive enough for me to fully enjoyed it.
There were some interesting recipes but overall nothing new.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The E-Book could be improved and more user-friendly, such as links to the chapters, no significant gaps between words some text written has been typed in red and a cover for the book would be better. It is very document-like instead of a book and the photos do not match the recipe.
5☆ A Beautiful Cookbook
What's for Dessert literally has something for everyone's tastes.
It's made up of the following chapters-
*Chilled & Frozen Desserts
*Stovetop Desserts
*Easy Cakes
*Bars, Cookies & Candied Things
*Pies, Tarts, Cobblers & Crisps
*More Desserts from the Oven
*Essential Recipes & Techniques
The recipes are simple to follow, the ingredients are measured in cups, Grams & Oz yippee!!! The recipes are beautifully illustrated making this book an absolute joy to read.
I love all the little added extras like step by step picture guides on how to do things like cutting and segmentation of fruits, making Creme Anglaise all with pictures, folding in mixtures, making caramel sauce ( my nemesis 🤭)
It really is a joy to have a reference to look back too.
What's for Dessert would make a Beautiful Gift for someone who adores baking, maybe just starting out baking or someone who has been baking for a long time. Either way this book deserves a place on your Cookbook shelf or library!
Scrumptious dessert ideas for any occasion. I certainly was pleasantly surprised and saved lots of recipes. Most recipes are very easy to follow, great step by step explanation and not overwhelmingly big list of ingredients for each recipe. Loved it and I will bake some of these very soon. Thank you!
With recipes complex enough to be considered a challenge but presented in a way that even a beginner to cooking and baking could follow; this book has something for everyone. I’m excited to try some of the desserts that I’ve never considered making before, the banoffee pudding looks simple but delicious. I love the atheistic of the photos, the pictures have a real retro feel that I feel really appealing. I love that all measurements, although originally presented in cups, also have alternatives (perfect for us brits)
What’s for dessert is an excellently written cook book.
The recipes are mouth watering and set out in a concise way.
The recipes include a lot of information but written so as not to overwhelm the reader.
There is a difficulty rating on each recipe , and tips to change ingredients these little things help to make the book a great cook book.
Although I think it would be suited to a cook who is not a complete beginner.
The pictures complete a well written book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Murdoch Books .
I love watching Claire Saffitz's videos so I couldn't wait to check out her dessert cookbook. She breaks down the items she keeps on hand in her kitchen, both appliances and ingredients. Each recipe has a difficulty rating and there are lots of easy recipes,.so I felt right at je.tryimg some! I started out with her hot chocolate recipe, accompanied by her homemade marshmallows. Yum!! Perfect for a cool fall evening. So excited to dig deeper into this book and I'm already pondering what to try next!
I am a big fan of Claire Saffitz and was so excited to receive an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book is jam packed with all types of desserts, and made so easy for any home baker. I made the All-In Shortbreads and followed the recipe exactly as written and they turned out great. I have never used a hand mixer to make shortbread before and was a little skeptical but it did make things so much easier. My husband loved them too. I can't wait to try more of her recipes.
Many of the recipes seem to incorporate fruit, so if you enjoy fruity desserts, this would be definitely be the book for you.
An excellent cookbook with a good mix of staple and more unique recipes. I love how Claire inserts questions like “can you make it gluten free, do you need a stand mixer” etc. As someone with a celiac in her life this is such a great addition that made me even more eager to try out some of the recipes!
In terms of recipes I’m likely to make, I think I definitely preferred her first book. Desert Person has quickly become a staple, go to for me. However, that’s not to say this isn’t a great companion and I cannot wait to make more from it!
If you do give this book a read make sure you check our Claire’s YouTube channel where she goes through some of her recipes – super helpful to get some extra tips from!
What a great book. It certainly my taste buds go into salivation mode just by reading the recipes. The book is not just a simple recipe book as it contains lots of tips throughout as well and even helpful hints on helping those with allergies or gluten free requirements. The photos are what makes it as well. It helped me to know what it should turn out like and then to feel good that the recipe really did work as written.
There is such a variety from full blown party desserts to stove top recipes nand the just easy cakes. All of which demonstrate how easy it is to cook make an impression and enjoy cooking and eating the results.
This is a book that I would highly recommended to anyone with a sweet tooth and especially those who want to make an impression on others at dinner parties, afternoon teas or simply friendly suppers.
This book has an amazing range of desserts. Really easy to follow and I am so impressed with the range of different ones on offer! It definitely isn't going to help my waistline though.
Oh my! What a full range of desserts. On the positive side this book is FULL of information and a wide variety of desserts for every season and occasion, The creator has really thrown everything at this publication but not always in a good way. There is just too much detail both in the forward, which of course you can just flip past, but also in each recipe. Sometimes she complicates and otherwise pretty simple process. An experienced baker will hopefully just trust their instincts but for someone less confident, it may be both off putting and result in panic! My other comment must be about the photos and style of the book. If I hadn't known I was reviewing a yet to be fully published edition, I would have presumed that this book came from the early 70s. The props, furniture, china etc is dated and so id the photography style. Perhaps this is intentional; if so well done!
Yes yes yes! Claire has done it again! I really like this book. First of all, I love the inclusion of the recipe matrix from the previous book which can make your life so much easier while trying to decide which recipe to try. In this book, the difficulty of the recipes is lower (no croissants this time), so recipes seem less intimidating and more approachable to home bakers. Moreover I really liked the unique sections of the book (e.g. frozen desserts) and I appreciate Claire's attempt to streamline the recipes as much as possible, even giving tips to reuse utensils so there is less cleanup whenever possible. The book includes many good tips in every recipe and answers possible questions that people might have when thinking of trying a recipe, which is greatly appreciated. Of course, at the end of the book there are some essential recipes and techniques which can be very helpful to new bakers. Lastly, the photography in this book is stunning (I love the retro vibes), as is the whole presentation of the book. All in all, I think that it's an excellent book for fans of Claire and home bakers in general. Would definitely recommend buying! Thanks to NetGalley and Murdoch Books for providing me with an advanced copy.
So many good food. Thrilled to try it out. Seems so yummy! Everything is simple to understand and beautiful to watch.
The answer to the title is anything from this book as it is full with so many mouthwatering and tasty deserts. My favourite part of this book was the Recipe Matrix which allows you find the recipe which best suits your time constraints and ability level. There is also a section which tell you how best to read the recipes and all the hidden hints and tips within each one. The recipes them cover a wide array of tastes and dietary requirements. The book is filled with gorgeous photographs to accompany the recipes. This has so much more to offer than just the recipes as it has so many hints and tips on ingredients, equipment and reducing waste. What an amazing book!
