I loved every delicious second of this book. A Christmas romcom that will make your toes and heart warm. A wonderfully vivid cast of characters, featuring a lurcher called Lettuce đź’š and a hilarious scenes involving bad fake tan, mud slinging and salad-eating deer. It was everything I wanted to read in December.
Sorry I didn’t get a chance to read this as it was archived before I was able to download to my kindle
Looks like like a lovely festive read
Dnf'd this book after Chapter one. The writing was not good and I couldn't get into the plot and characters. The man character of Nory is shown to be extremely judgmental in chapter 1 so I just couldn't bare listening to anymore of it.
This was a cute romance read! I liked Nory a lot and enjoyed the exploits of her and her school friends and loved how they explored their connections as adults compared to when they were at school. I thought the setting was great and I really liked Isaac and their blossoming relationship.
However, I found parts of the book frustrating and felt it was quite a bit longer than was necessary. The third act breakup didn’t seem needed, although I did like the plot that that was linked to. I think this story could’ve been more concise without taking away anything from it, but overall pretty enjoyable.
Thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for this E-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I adore Jenny Bayliss's stories so I was truly excited to start reading her newest release. It was a brilliant, funny and also poignant story but there was something missing, something that would make this book as great as the previous ones. Often I had a feeling that nothing is happenning, actually, even though there was a lot of action and dialogues - but still, it was as if the story simply didn't move forward. I'm not sure why, I can't put my finger on it, I simply think this book could be a bit shorter. It is rather on a slow side, what with many characters involved and needing a lot of introductions, the background of the characters, there are many explanations and actually, now I'm thinking about it, I'm not sure what the main point was. Nory's romance would be my guess.
Nevertheless, I still adored this story. Jenny Bayliss has a great way of writing, her writing style is light and engaging and the dialogues were brilliant, they felt real and genuine, like real conversations, I had a feeling I'm sitting there with the characters, chatting with them, being aware of the surrounding, which was a great feeling. The interaxtions between characters were really well captured, I had a feeling they really like each other, or don't.
The setting was also lovely, Nory's bookshop was a great place to be and I loved her feelings towards the books. So understandable!
I think that maybe the author has simply touched upon too many issues and this is why the book felt this little bit unsteady and not so thought - over. There were the subplots of racism, adultery, classism, suicide, family dynamics, to name only a few, and those are huge issues and to fit them in one story needs real skills.
But altogether, it was a feel - good story, sometimes a bit annoying, but light - hearted and with some lough - out - loud moments and I enjoyed it.
I was so disappointed with this book. I loved The Twelve Dates of Christmas so I was looking forward to reading this. Apart from Isacc, I didn't particularly warm to any of the characters. It didn't really feel very festive until the very end either. I was hoping for it to get better but I just found it very drawn out and I was glad when I finished it.
I do enjoy a Jenny Bayliss read and whilst I did enjoy the book, it dealt with a heavier topic's than I expected to be honest and it's not something that I really want to read in a Christmas book. However, that is only my opinion on things, I found the story went a slow pace as well and I struggled with this.
Meet Me Under the Mistletoe is a delightful, uplifting, feel-good romance read that is perfect for the festive period. Set in stunning locations and with just as beautifully created characters, this is worth snuggling up to under a warm blanket and cup of your favourite hot drink.
Jenny Bayliss writes with heartfelt emotion, and I connected to Nory from the early chapters. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I highly recommend it.
Meet me under the mistletoe is such an Exquisitely written book, perfect for the holiday and winter season. This book had me hooked from the start and I could
Not put this down at all ! This novel goes into so much depth and detail, which I feel helps to really get to know the characters and really picture them as a real life person.
I did feel that it all could of been sorted out in the end if Issac wasn’t so stubborn and listened to Nory, this did make me enjoy the ending a little bit less and I didn’t really want to read on but I managed to get through it.
I loved this! I really enjoyed Jenny's other books and I wasn't disappointed by this one. We follow Nory and her friends as they prepare for a wedding at the hotel next to their old school. The characters are all well-written and believable, the wintery setting is beautiful, and the story flows nicely. My only niggle was the third act misunderstanding, could have been solved with a chat, not my favourite trope. But a happy ending and a great feel good story!
Nory is off to a castle near her old school for a wedding of high school friends. The wedding reunites their gang and leads Nory to a familiar face. Isaac the gardener has grown up well and she soon finds herself falling for him but can it work out. Especially as an old fling is also there.
Well this was a fabulous read. It covers an awful lot of emotions. One minute its happy and funny, the next it touches on some darker and more sad aspects. It did have me laughing so many times. The ending was well written and tied the story off so well. I liked the conclusions of each character with no one giving up for another. Although I love Nory and Isaac. I think my favourite characters were jeremy for being so calm and steady and Ameera because she is just amazing and such a good friend. A brilliant fetstive read with lots of snow based fun.
Great book. Cute romance. The different storylines will definitely keep you entertained. The different locations of the book and the bookshop make for perfect read along locations at Christmas time! Will definitely be picking up Jenny’s other books.
Elinor Noel (Norry) runs Serendipitous Seconds, a second hand bookshop in London. When she receives an invitation from an old school friend to a pre wedding house party, she is unsure whether to go. She decides to go with her best school friend, Ameerah, and has to navigate loss, love and friendship problems in the lead up to the wedding.
Having really enjoyed The Twelve Dates of Christmas, i had high expectations and unfortunately this book fell short for me. It took me a good 20% to 25% to get into it and actually want to pick it up to read it. Having said that, I did enjoy the scene setting and descriptions of the castle Nory and her friends stayed in. Not quite the Christmas book i was expecting, but overall i am glad i read it.
Hmmm, this is an interesting one.
I felt this story did not know what it wanted to be.
Did it want to be a cute Christmas story with usual family shennanigans or did it want to be this drama of sorts with social commentary.
Due to this dichotomy, not enough time were spent on the social issues which led to minimal character growth. The death of Tristan created an underlying macabre tone throughout.
The third act conflict was lazy and my most hated type of conflict. No grovelling and no honest, open conversation took place. Just an airy-fairy hallmark-type make-up scene.
I also felt this story went on for a bit too long.
I have now read quite a lot of Christmas books thanks to Netgalley and this was one of my favourites so far, I loved last years christmas book and this was equally good, cozy up and enjoy
This was the most perfect wintery read. I adored it. The characters are really interesting and there’s plenty to keep you hooked
The story of Nory and Isaac.
Nory is back at the castle for a friends wedding, and is surprised to find Isaac there as the gardener. Will this be their chance for a romance? A great festive read.
There are some great themes and ideas in this latest from Jenny Bayliss!! Although the title sounds Christmassy, I didn’t find the read very festive or feel good, more all about old school friends and weddings ……. And not as great as previous books from Jenny.
The main character is Eleanor also called Nory, which had me confused for a few pages, who runs a wonderful collectors book shop in Mayfair. When she returns to her home town for a friend’s wedding and bumps into the gardener Isaac, her feelings come to the surface around friends family and what she wants and is doing with her life.
There were too many unrealistic scenarios, really annoying characters, and for me the book just didn’t gel or come together. I did read to the end but sadly this one didn’t do it for me.
Thank you Netgalley for the early read.
Beautiful settings and very well described, the characters were great. All in all this was a lovely book to read and I enjoyed it. 5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this ARC
