An Illustrated History of Ghosts is the latest instalment by Adam Allsuch Boardman in his Illustrated History series. This was my first time encountering Boardman's work but based on the premise and being published by Nobrow, I was expecting something aimed at older readers and either principally visual or prose/sequential art in tandem. (Akin to books like Luke Healy's Americana, also published by Nobrow.)
Instead, Ghosts feels much more targeted towards much younger readers and offers a very high-level overview of a broad variety of things pertinent to ghosts, but never really leverages the spooky subject matter or the unique advantages of illustration to offer something more tangible. There were a few instances when really interesting details or myths were alluded to but the prose failed to go into more detail, or it was jammed into a list format that didn't help bring the subject matter to life for me.
Boardman's artistic style is clean and crisp but I found the overall experience pretty surface level as a newbie to this series. Veterans who know Boardman's work will likely really enjoy this as it's clearly a good quality output, just not to my taste.
A very interesting book. I enjoyed it but I can't help thinking it was a little bit brief. I expected a bit of an indepth insight
This is an interesting new addition and it has it's own unique place between the rest. Adam Allsuch Boardman has explored the world of ghosts in this volume in a visual and anecdotal manner that I don't think I've seen. His gorgeous graphic illustrations of which there are many, make his guide to the afterlife fun like no other. I'd honestly fill my office with his art if I had access and the wallet to make it happen. If you are interested in a light-reading approach to the paranormal, you may need no other book. It covers the gamut. I highly recommend this book for the curious and experienced alike. Get it now.
Thank You Net Gallery for this Book.
This is a fantastic book and a great concept, I love ghosts and haunting books, but haven’t read an illustrated guide before. I was expecting so much from this and I wasn’t disappointed, it was even more interesting than I anticipated, I adored the illustrations, so beautiful, fantastic artwork. I thought it was really good for a younger reader interested in ghosts and teaching them the basics, or someone like me who just loves to read any books on ghosts and hauntings. Fabulous and thoroughly interesting
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
An illustrated History of Ghosts by Adam Allsuch Boardman
is a comprehensive look into ghosts. It maybe short but gives an overview of a lot including first hauntings, the rise of spiritualism, mediumship, prominent ghosts and people in the field and ghost hunting.
I thought she knew quite abit on the subject but there are some snippets here that had passed me by.
I particularly loves the recommended further reading and viewing including Scooby doo. 😀 This book was reminiscent of The World of the Unknown Ghosts I used to borrow from the library growing up in the 80s.
I don't know what I was expecting of this book, however it was far more interesting than I anticipated, and a really interesting and beautifully drawn book about ghosts, culturally, historically and literarily and it makes a really great read for spooky season!
I loved reading this book, fascinating information (I didn't know ghosts had haunting categories?!) tied together with some really incredible illustrations that bring this book together really beautifully (I would say brought to life but..) this book is a real gem for a young ghost hunter in your life (and haven't we all gone through that phase? right? *nervous laugh*
A fantastic read, thank you to Netgalley for the book for review!
I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was, it is well written with fantastic illustrations which were one of my favourite things about this book and I loved that it had traditions, myths and stories from around the world, some of which I knew and some of which I didn't. This has made me want to read more from this series.
I didn't realise this was part of a series! I'd be very interested in seeing the other titles after reading this.
The illustrations are beautiful, very soft and inviting, allowing you to concentrate on the facts whilst providing good context for the information.
It's the first time I've seen explanations from different cultures and belief systems in such depth, usually you only hear of the traditional western (often religious) and maybe some Japanese myths and traditions, both make up the majority of horror media we see today.
I love that it mentions positive ghost experiences like the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, ghosts can get a lot of negative press when they're often not violent or even inclined to interact!
Through modern media, use of a ghost has become quite generic and somewhat one dimensional, so to learn about the different kinds of ghost and apparition (and some of the history behind each) is really cool.
Hands down one of my favourite books I’ve read this year! I loved the illustration style and how easy it was to read all the information, and how fun it was! I did not want to put it down and now I want a physical copy too!
A brilliant, informative book which is exactly what it says on the tin. Covering history going up to the present day, this book gives information about ghosts in different forms and cultures, hauntings and ghosts in popular culture.
I'm unsure on the target audience, as the illustrations are simple and the text is simplified, so maybe aimed at a young reader or someone getting into the paranormal.

Do you believe in ghosts??
Do you think they are real?
Does the idea of ghosts scare you or fascinate you?
Aimed to the younger end of the reading market this is an enjoyable read despite formatting issues on my kindle.
This is a great and surprisingly informative book. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but felt it was aimed more at younger people
A really fun and informative history of all things ghosts. I didn’t expect the book to go into such detail about things that I, personally, might not have even associated with ghosts (such as magicians). It was a pleasant surprise! The illustrations were fantastic and the descriptions and stories was clearly very well researched. Thank you NetGalley for the copy!
It is what it says on the cover - an illustrated history of ghosts! Starting in pre-modernity and covering history up to the present day, the book gives information about ghosts in different forms and cultures, hauntings and ghosts in popular culture.
The illustrations are cute and I really enjoyed the book - my one criticism would be that it was a whistlestop tour and of the paranormal, so wouldn’t be suitable for anyone wanting in-depth information! I’m also unsure who the intended audience is - the illustrations and the simple writing style would suggest a younger audience but some of the content would probably be over their heads.
I received a free digital copy of the book from Netgalley in return for a fair review - but I enjoyed it so much I bought a physical copy too!
A super cute read for all those young boils and ghouls out there. The illustrations were lovely and there were lots of interesting facts and history about ghosts from around the world. A lovely read.
This novel is exactly as the title suggests. I would have loved to read something like this when I was younger and in my first moment of awe and insistence of watching ghost hunting videos and shows and adamant that ghosts and spirits are real.
This graphic novel goes through detailed accounts of past and present experiences of ghosts with some wonderful artwork to accompany it.
I would have loved to see the graphic novel go a bit or in-depth with some of the writing and details but without it just makes it an excellent starting guide and introduction to ghosts and ghost hunting. I was surprised to see it talk about ghost hunting equipment and it's evident that the author did their research into many of the topics and historical background.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book, especially for anyone who wants to learn a bit more about the history behind ghosts, especially from different backgrounds and cultures. Those who already know a good bit may find some interesting information on where certain ghosts originated from and more!
Thank you so much to the publishers for providing me with an eArc of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Unsure if my copy but the book needs editing, paragraphs ending before finished to read The end of the paragraph pages later. Abit all over the place so was hard to read.
Basic book for abit of spooky fun
An Illustrated History of Ghosts is a spooky and informative graphic novel featuring ghost related facts alongside stunning artwork! The book features facts about haunted houses, objects and people and I learnt something new every page. I would have liked there to be more detail, however this served as a quick and easy ghostly guide! If you are looking for a thorough guide to all things haunted, I would recommend something more detailed. But for someone learning the basics of the paranormal, this is brilliant!
This was gorgeously illustrated and a great introduction to ghost-hunting. My only reservation was that the way it was written had a very "high school essay" feel to it. The prose could have been a little more professionally written with smoother transitions and better care taken to juggle reader interest and information.
This was a cute illustrated review of the concepts of ghosts across history and cultures. I really liked the illustrations and the information was insightful , but wouldn’t use this book for an in-depth exploration.
