Downloaded a cpuple of similar looking (cover) books at the same time so expected them to blur into one, but this one stood out for me. Particularly liked the characters, also the setting was perfect. Have reccomended to girls in the book club. 4/5
Great story set in Anglesey which adds a small village, isolated vibe to this thrilling story.
Following the tale of Lawrie who, after a period of estrangement, returns to the island after the passing of her beloved Auntie Gwen and embarks on a journey of self discovery via funerals, abductions and a murder.
Perfectly set in the backdrop of a working funeral home, this spooky mystery proves that things aren't always as they seem and quiet places aren't always without their drama.
3.5 stars
Audio review: I liked the narrator and would happily listen to her again.
This didn't quite hit for me. The setting was brilliant and the MC was relatable enough (although why all young mothers in thrillers have to be down on their luck, struggling with money and largely under educated and under advantaged, I don't know. Why couldn't she just be an underpaid employee in a skilled job - there are enough of us!). The story fallows the basic outline of a gothic-y thriller. Young woman has to go back to the unusual house in which she grew up, where she is confronted with the past/ truth and various unhelpful inhabitants etc but the author delivered it in an engaging way. I was most intrigued at the point where a child abduction case from twenty years before seemed to be echoed by the abduction of the MCs daughter. There also appeared to be something uncanny going on. However when the big reveal comes, a lot of that promise evaporates. Overall I enjoyed it but it didn't quite stick the landing for me.
The last house on the cliff was a okay family saga story but I did find my attention waned a bit as it did drag in places, in fact when a character was killed, I didn’t actually remember hearing that part at all and unfortunately not even the excellent narration from Gloria Sanders couldn’t help but I would like to say as well she also did a wonderful job pronouncing all the Welsh names & places,
A secluded island. A missing Child. A home built on secrets and lies
After being informed of her estrange aunts death Lowry travels to Anglesey for the funeral. Shortly after arriving strange things start to happen and then her daughter disappears.
There were twists and turns as this story unfolded. Secrets surround Lowry and she can’t work out just wha this happening. Where is her daughter? Is she safe or as something sinister happened?
I did enjoy listening to this but I did at times feel a little confused, not sure if that was me drifting out and being distracted or if it was just the way the story unfolded.
I enjoyed the narration of this and found the narrator easy to listen to.
Hightailed recommend and am looking forward to discovering more from this author.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this title
I liked the blurb for this title and was looking forward to an Anglesey setting as I live there. I’ve tried to get into the book on a number of occasions over the past three weeks, but at 36%, I’ve given up. It’s only rarely I don’t complete a title as I chose books I believe I’ll enjoy, so this is exceptional. I’m not keen on the narrator; I found the delivery rather flat and dull. That aside, it’s the book that’s the real issue. I have no sense of place, which was a disappointment. The central character doesn’t have any personality or presence.. The writing is simplistic and there’s no pace or drama. Even where there should be suspense building or a sense of menace developing, it somehow falls flat. It feels like formulaic writing; trying too hard to include too many descriptors and failing to achieve the desired effect. I don’t enjoy being critical or negative as the author has expended significant time and energy in writing the book, but on this occasion, it hasn’t grabbed me at all.
My thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley.
Single mum Lowri is invited to her Auntie Gwyn's will reading.
After years away Lowri then heads back to Anglesey with her daughter Ruby
Lowri has a lot of happy memories there as she spent her summers as a child with Auntie Gwyn until a family argument put paid to the visits and Lowri never went back
When Ruby goes missing and Lowri remembers this isn't the first time a child has gone missing in the town and the race is on to find Ruby
Lots of twists and turns and different characters so it did get a bit confusing and I had to listen to a couple of chapters twice but don't let that put you off
I enjoyed this book
This is one of those books where your imagination is jumping from one conclusion to another. In general I was wrong in all of my thinking. I like that. This is a good book with a satisfying end
This is a dark and creepy mystery/thriller that kept me engaged from the start.
Lowri hasn't had the happiest lives so far and when she returns to Anglesey on the death of her beloved aunt, Gwyn, she thinks this might be the start of a better life for her and her daughter, Ruby. Little does she know what nightmare awaits.
The location and setting of this story is genius; the author captures the small island village and the ever present dangerous cliffs together with the dark and creepy atmosphere of the house perfectly and I was transported there by her excellent and vivid descriptions.
There are quite a few characters and it did take me a while to get a grasp on them all but they are an interesting and eclectic bunch and not all of them are particularly likeable but all fit in and have their place in the story.
The story itself is a complex one of historical family trauma that spans generations. There is a pervading sense of the creepy and the unsettling from the start with some great twists culminating in a very satisfying ending that brought everything together.
The narrator was excellent; her voice was absolutely perfect for the story and I actually think I enjoyed it more because of her narration. Would I have enjoyed it had I read it rather than listened? I think so but I would definitely have had trouble with pronouncing the Welsh words!
Overall, a great audio book to keep you company whilst driving, cleaning or doing just about anything that doesn't need a lot of thought and many thanks to HarperCollins UK Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts on The Last House on the Cliff.
This book is phenomenal, the atmosphere gave me goosebumps the entire time, and I don't think I will forget that ending in a long time. - IT WAS INSANE. - The twists in the novel made it one of my fastest reads of the year. The family dynamics were so complicated, I had no idea who to trust.
This a must read if you like thrillers with a Gothic atmosphere, with a secluded locked in feel..
Anne Wyn Clark was immediately added to my favourite thriller authors, I need to read more.

The location was amazing. The characters were well written and it all worked out. Some of the twists I worked out and some came as a surprise (sign of a great book).
I listened to this as an audio book and it really worked - the narration just added to the story.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
This started off so strong and has a really interesting and creepy storyline. I love a bit of suspense but it needs to be executed well. Unfortunately it was very slow paced and extremely drawn out to get to the good stuff. Once it did get going and started coming together it makes for interesting listening which is a pity about the slow paced middle section. Quirky and likeable characters that all have there own history. I enjoyed the narration and it was one of the reasons I kept going. If you can get over the slow paced drawn out storyline it’s worth giving a go but it just didn’t work for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK Audio for the opportunity to listen to #TheLastHouseOnTheCliff
This book has all the makings of a great story. It reminds me of a TV series crime drama and could certainly be used a good basis for such a program. However, it is really slow to get going. If I had been reading it, instead of listening, I would have skip read parts as I found it somewhat dragged. The pace picked up later with a gallop to the finish. Another point, is that I found some of the investigation during the search rather annoyingly incorrect and inconsistent. For example, (warning spoiler here.....) why oh why would the police not search the whole house where Lowri and Ruby were staying? And surely the police would not deliver aspects of the investigation in such a way as depicted? All in all a fair story with a good narrator but perhaps would be improved with a rework.
I received my audio version of The Last House on the Cliff via Netgalley in return for an honest review.
The narration was excellent, I don't necessarily look for different voices for different characters as it often doesn't work that well but in this case the narrator did a wonderful job.
The book started very well, setting the scene, drawing me in dropping little clues along the way.
There were no really likeable characters and I found I wasn't even very emotionally involved when a child went missing. It then dragged on for a while until suddenly the pace picked up, multiple crimes were divulged and I felt that the author had about eight books she could have written but decided to condense them into one somewhat unbelievable book with a rushed conclusion.
I feel that Anne Wyn Clark has enormous potential and I will look out for future works.
Abundant in gothic atmosphere The Last House on the Cliff sees Lowrie and her daughter Ruby return to the isolated Welsh homeland. Her aunt, an undertaker, has passed away. The house is dark and unsettling. Lowrie feels like she is being watched and Ruby keeps catching glimpses of an old woman. The house is haunted by a heavy history, which comes unravelled when young Ruby goes missing. If you like eerie atmospheric audiobook and thriller authors like Alice Feeney, then you will enjoy this audiobook. It is well narrated by a single narrator to easily convey each of the varying characters and to build tension. I could not stop listening as each twist and reveal was unveiled! #TheLastHouseontheCliff #AnneWynClark #Netgalley #thriller
Unfortunately there was an issue with my copy but what I did listen to I really enjoyed just a shame I never got to finish it. So based on what I heard it was 4 stars really enjoyed what I did hear.
An amazing and dark tale with building levels of tension and eeriness throughout. Chapters from different viewpoints really helped to add to the air of mystery, building on the relationships and backstory of each character. The tale starts slowly and snowballs towards the end, as the book went on I was gripped waiting to find out what secrets would be revealed.
The narrator was excellent, giving personality and making it easy to differentiate between each person.
(
I enjoyed the use of Welsh throughout but perhaps include a welsh-anglo glossary might be helpful? I found it hard to follow the relatives titles in places.)
A slow burner but once the story got going, I was totally absorbed. I did find the ending was rushed which is why I haven't given it 4 stars
The Last House On The Cliff starts well. A young mother, Lowri, and her daughter, Ruby, returning to the home of her recently deceased aunt to attend her funeral. The home in question happens to be a funeral home in an isolated part of Wales and is now run by an elderly brother and sister who are hoping that the home has been left to them. The setting is suitably creepy and added to this are the death of a young girl many years ago and more recently the disappearance of another girl. The creepiness starts to increase when both Lowri and Ruby witness a strange figure lurking around the gardens.
It's at this point that the story takes a turn for the worse. It feels as if the writer couldn't quite decide what kind of story to write and threw everything at it. The whole story became very convoluted and certainly wasn't helped by a vast range of characters. I was tempted to give up at the halfway mark but persevered to the conclusion. Even once the numerous threads where all tied together the writer still had to throw in yet another plot twist.
Vivid, expansive and richly imagined….. An absolutely unforgettable read, perfect for fans of gripping family dramas, and for those who enjoy great storytelling. I read the audiobook version and really enjoyed the narrator. Highly recommend. Great narration.
