1453. England is in a state of turmoil and the Wars of the Roses are about to begin. On the throne sits Henry VI, a weak and unstable king married to a dangerously vindictive woman. Surrounding the royal couple are unscrupulous men whose apparent loyalty disguises their ambition and hunger for power.
Far from the king's court, law and order is breaking down as advantages are sought and old scores are settled. In the North, the Percy brothers are conducting a private war against their Nevill cousins while in the South West, the Earl of Devon's son pursues his own deadly blood feud with the Bonville family.
Caught in this maelstrom is Kathryn Nevill, young daughter of the Earl and Countess of Salisbury. One day while riding home she comes face to face with a shocking act of violence. Terrified by the threats to herself and her family she sees a means of escape when her father finds her a husband. But she quickly discovers that her new life in the West Country is steeped in its own particular brand of murderous savagery.
The path to Kathryn's happiness is strewn with danger but with courage and determination she can fight her way through to achieve what she most desires - but the turning of Fortune's Wheel is never far away.

A fascinating time period that kept my interest all the way through!
The Tudors are an interesting family. I've been fascinated with them since I read my first book from Alison Weir.
I learned a lot from reading this book. There were definitely some scenes I didn't care for and yes, some things weren't all hunky dory either but all in all it was a great read!
I especially loved how War of the Roses got its name. I felt like I learned something new from this novel.
Kathryn's journey was one of courage. She did what she had to do for her family and I really admired that about her.
I think that some of this book reminds me of the Hatfield and Mccoy feud.
I think the author has done her research very well and carefully. She made this book come alive for me and I felt like I was living this journey myself. In so.e ways it was very exciting and other ways fearful.
I recommend this book for anyone who loves historical fiction.
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book contains a lot of factual material, but although the author has researched her period well, I found it disappointing as a novel, because I could not engage with any of the characters. Also, the multitude of dramatic incidents could have been structured more effectively to give the book a better pace and energy. On the whole, I was somewhat disappointed and will not be recommending that my followers read this one.
Excellent historical fiction. The War of the Roses is about to begin, the vicious brutal battle for the English throne between the houses of Lancaster and York. Young Kathryn Nevill, as many young women were, is a pawn for her father and family to advance their suit. Facing savagery and brutality Kathryn hopes for happiness in her life.
