I enjoyed this story and love how you finally get an explanation for why these characters are the way they are. S much as I love them and their relationship together, their families annoy me greatly and I enjoyed seeing them overcome walls build up and being torn down

Fake engagement! This trope is used very often, however this story is a fresh take. I loved it. Griffin and Edith’ are meant to be, but it's so fun watching them stumble their way to a HEA.

I enjoyed this opposites-attract romance. Both Edith and Griffin had major epiphanies throughout the novel. I think the character development was great. Edith and Griffin made a great couple!

Fun Regency romp! Exactly what I needed for a cold rainy day. Just the right amount of silliness and pacey plot.

Sweet, easy read. The characters were likable and the story was well paced. It was very predictable but still a nice, quick read.

This book had my heart racing… It took me a while to calm down and go to sleep!… An excellent book. Absolutely brilliant…

Lady Edith knows that she needs to marry. After all, her lot in life is to marry and produce heirs for her husband, isn't it? Well, that's what her father, and brothers (affectionately known as the Brutes) have always told her. But, she never expected that her family would demand she marry by the Season's end, or else one of her brother's reprobate friends will be chosen for her. Griffin Paxton, the Earl of Eastern, and one of the family's oldest friends, finds himself in a similar situation. His father is dying, and has demanded that Griffin marry first, or else he'll tell society about his mother's affair. It doesn't matter than the marquess has been a rake for his whole life, and is dying of the pox. No, it's on Griffin's head to restore honour to the family. So Griffin needs to find a respectable bride, and though he wants Edith, her passion would be his ruin, wouldn't it?

I think this one may be my favourite of the series. We saw both Edith and Griffin in the previous book, and it was clear then that Griffin has some feelings for her. I'll admit, I didn't like her in that book, but as she was attempting to get in the way of the main couple's happiness, I think that can be excused. What we see in this book completely makes up for her past digressions, as it explains away just why she after that way, particularly when you consider her family life. I loved that both of them proclaimed they were rakes in their own ways, but neither had any experience with the other sex, and where exploring it all together. A fake romance plot line will always get my attention, and this one was executed very well. I'm hoping the next book will be about Sarah and Xavier, because their chemistry was more than clear in this book!

Edith and Griffin are known to us at the start of this novel but not yet together. With Griffin's father on his deathbed, there are promises made. And Edith is looking out for herself too. What starts is a delightful fake-it-till-you-make-it story that seamlessly flows into a true love story.
I admit I read this book because of the beautiful cover and I am glad I did. All characters were a delight to discover.

This was the first book I've read by Charlie Lane, but it won't be the last! his historical romance was fun, moving, and both the h/h were people I could get behind and want as friends.

Griffin's father is dying. A self-professed rake, the old man wants his son to bring back the shining reputation the family once had. To do so, griffin must marry a woman of impeccable character.

Lady Edith thought she was in love and threw herself at the man in a most scandalous manner, that somehow managed not to get out into society's rumor mill. Or so she thinks. her family wants her to marry - now. The only problem? No one suitable.

Griffin needs a wife; Edith, a husband. These two conspire to form a fake relationship/engagement just to buy the other time.
the only problem? What has become fake and what has become real?

Young ladies of the 19th century had discovered not only Mary W but also that they could obtain salacious or 'naughty' books that entertained and informed them about behaviour they could undertake, and what really happened in the marriage bed.
Some had taken this information and acted recklessly on it. So Edith had been found out and a minor scandal resulted that very few knew about but rumours found they way to Griffin's father.
The Brutes had not found out though, and this enabled them to continue in their determination to get Edith wed. This was women wanted and needed.
Charlie Lane crafts delightful heroines with intelligence and verve, in a story that amuses as it tells of the constraints that bound women in this era.

I am a fan of a good romantic tale and the fake engagement trope. It was probably the first one that I ever read when I picked up a book of this genre a long time ago. This story has both, and I liked it even better than the previous book in the series, although I had read both without prior information about the series or the characters within.
I suspected who the next book would be about even without seeing the blurb of the next, mostly because of a very well-timed mention by a would-be suitor in the fourth book.
Our leading lady is not a joiner. She has her reasons, and if you read this on the heels of the previous one, then you will know the reason for her current mood. She has a family that she finds hard to think actually cares for her. This is the part that I might have liked best after the romance plot. Her brothers and father all seem to behave atrociously on the surface, but for the most part, they actually mean to do something else altogether(not all of them, not all the time). I wanted to dislike them but ended up feeling neutral - something that does not often happen to me in lighter books like this.
The blurb lays out the story in a straightforward manner. Both of our leads have to get married for selfish reasons, but neither will admit they have always liked the other. This is obviously a well-used recipe, but I am, as always, a fan.
I felt there were more hints about the next couple in this one than in the previous book, but I am not complaining. These books must be read in the right mood, without too much introspection into the logic of everything. It was a quick read, and if I get a chance to read the next, I definitely plan to.
I think fans of this genre will like this series.

Only Rakes Would Dare is an opposites attract, fake relationship, role-reversing friends-to-lovers romance with a twist or two by Charlie Lane. Griffin against his better judgment agrees to fake an engagement with Edith in order to buy them both some time to deal with their respective dilemmas. The banter between Edith’s chauvinistic father and brothers, whom she refers to as “the brutes”, was laugh out loud funny. An overall entertaining read that has me looking forward to the next book in the series.

I found the story of two friends that goes many years to be a sweet romantic story. I think that the writer did a wonderful job with sharing an entertaining story. The craft of the story provided me with the imagination of the characters journey in the book. The book is a face pace read. The characters are witty and charming.

This charts the journey with all its twists along the way.

A fast moving read full of characters and humour. A enjoyable read.

Edith's father and the Brutes declare she has to marry and Griffin's father's dying wish is for him to marry. They have a plan to hold both sides off for a bit, but how often do plans work out in books? This is well written, has good chemistry, and a bit of humor.

This is a fun and entertaining fifth installment in the Debutante Dare series by Charlie Lane. Charlie Lane knows how to craft a charming and delightful historical romance with interesting characters and situations. Lane's writing is humous and engaging, well paced and brings to life a wonderful romance. This series is definitely one to explore if you love interesting and strong characters in clever situations and learn to discover that love is always worth fighting for.

Lady Edith only wants to marry a man she truly desires and who desires her, but her father is threatening to provide her with a husband if she does not find one by the end of the season. Enter Griffin, a family friend who saves her from unwanted advances causing her to fall a little bit in love with him in that moment. Griffin is in need of a proper wife in order to restore the reputation his father's rakish ways have tainted his family name. So Lady Edith is not exactly the ideal match, but Edith claims a fake engagement between them with help to appease both their fathers, so they enter into an arrangement which leads to many steamy kisses that will tempt them both to let down their guard.

Lady Edith is a romantic, she is lighthearted and fun loving, she calls herself a rake because she is quick to give her heart to others and she dreams of an epic romance. Griffin is stoic and guarded, his father's exploits have left Griffin cautious and careful when it comes to the way that he presents himself in society. This opposites attract, fake engagement romance is such a delight. I love watching the ways Edith and Griffin both test each other, open themselves up and let their hearts truly love. Lane creates a lighthearted, humorous, and heartfelt romance between these two. While they are tested from the outside, these two learn to find strength and hope in each other, they learn to fight for what they truly want and they are rewarded with a sweet and sensual love for the other. Lane does a lovely job showing the trust and understanding these two have for each other in their physical exploration of each other. Their chemistry is sensual, sweet, open and consensual as these two give themselves whole heartedly-mind and body, to each other.

Definitely a read for the historical romance lover! If you have not tried Charlie Lane, she is a must read. I am looking forward to continuing to explore and read her backlist.
