Read an ARC.
What are the odds the two books I've read in this series have nearly identical covers? Going to rate them the same, use a little of the previous review, but this was the better book.
While it is book #5 you could read this as a standalone and be quite satisfied. It does reference events and people from previous books but takes time to establish what happened and why we should care about either of these people.
All the usual hallmarks of a regency book revolving around the marriage prospects of a fiery woman.
It fizzles a bit dealing with father figures, who both feel very one dimensional.
Would definitely read more of these!
What a lovely book! Edith is the only girl with five brothers. She is beautiful and talented but non of them including her father really see her. Her father wants her wed. She meets an old childhood friend, Griffin, who has been given an ultimatum to marry before his father, the Earl, dies. Edith and Griffin form a partnership to fake an engage, however, life has a way of changing things. A fun adventure!
Edith’s family just wants her married. Griffin wants to repair his family’s reputation. They hatch a plan to pretend to be engaged. Because of the things in their past, there is a chance of a scandal.
The heroine calls herself a rakess. She is strong willed and unpredictable. She leads with her heart. She is an earl’s daughter. The hero was born a second son. His brother dies from a reckless act. He will one day be a marquess. He tries to protect those he loves.
The story is well written. I’m can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Lady Edith has been friends with Griffin Paxton, Lord Eastern, for a long time. She seeks him out when her father and the "Brutes" decide she must marry. Really it's what women are suppose to do, according to all the males in her family. She approaches Griffin with a proposal. He needs a wife and she must marry. A fake engagement would satisfy their problems, as long as they don't marry. But endless kisses have a way of making them rethink the deal. Griffin begans to let the ice wall around his heart melt and accept he wants Edith, but does Edith want him? Humor and a jar of honey keep some levity to the story.
Unusual characters in the story.
Heat level 4.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
We had a taste of Edith beforehand and her story continues with the almost scandal. When her father and the Brute’s (her 5 brothers) gives her the ultimatum that she must marry or they would find her a husband she comes up with a scheme to fool them all. Approaching her childhood friend Griffin she lays out the plans of a fake engagement. This actually would be beneficial to Griffin to honor his father dying wish. The funny thing is years later there is a hint of something more than friendship and saving Edith from a unwanted marriage. I enjoyed the previous books in the series, this was a little of a letdown. The story did drag on and the character of Griffin didn’t seem realistic. Plus the ending has to many spoiler alerts or was it meant to be teasers for the next book? Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #OnlyRakesWouldDare #WolfPublishing
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK. THE SMUT WAS FANTASTIC AND ALSO....FAKE DATING TROP IN REGENCY ENGLAND?!?!?!? YES FREAKING PLEASE
This is a fun, quick, light romance that keeps the reader entertained.,
Lady Edith considers herself a bit of a rake after she scandalously tried to seduce a man she thought she was in love with only to find he loved someone else. Lord Griffin comes from a family filled with rakes. His father and late brother were so rakish they have tarnished the family name and with his father on his deathbed Lord Griffin sets out to find the perfect proper lady to wed and help him set the family name to rights. He most certainly doesn't want a lady who considers herself a rake, or does hje?
Cut, fun entertainment, I give it 4 stars and a thumbs up! You will enjoy Lady Edith and her rakish ways.
Thank you to Wolf Publishing and to Net Galley for the free ARC, I am leaving my honest review in return.
Will they dare? She just wants someone that will truly love her. He wants a lady that is beyond reproach and will help show his family as upstanding... after all his father just about ruined their name!
A fun opposites attract story with a heroine who seems a little outlandish and a gentleman who tries to be straight laced, the sparks that begin to fly cannot be denied!
Sit back and enjoy!
This was an entertaining, well-written book. It was sweet, lighthearted and steamy. It held my interest and I wanted to find out what would happen. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is book 5 in the Debutante Dares series and a little depth would be added from having read the previous book. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading book 6 in this series.
Edith and Griffin’s story, a good regency romance. Fake courtship turns to love in this sweet story with good characterisation. A bit slow to start but worth sticking with it..
Lady Edith has been fighting for someone to truely notice her, and want her for herself most of her life. The only daughter of a family of larger than life men "The Brutes" who think they know what's best for her. That's going to be marriage as soon as possible.
Lord Griffin was the second son but the behavior his father encouraged in the eldest, cost his life. Now his father is dying from his own excessively bad decisions. He expects our hero to repair the family reputation with marriage to a "proper" Lady. Our hero has always bottled up his stronger feelings to be as opposite to his father as possible. He's seen the hurt it caused his mother and the damage that passion causes.
This is a very amusing historical romance filled with almost explosive characters. Our heroine in particular refuses to fit in the mold that she should. Her family look fascinating. I will definitely be looking for more books from this series and author. A really good, fun read.
I loved it.
A Lady Rake
What a hilarious, fun packed adventure into love. After an unfortunate incident, Lady Edith’s father and brothers decided she must marry and if she couldn’t find someone, they would find one for her! Griffin Paxton, the Earl of Eastern needed to find a wife before his father died otherwise his father would reveal a dark family secret.
Griffin wasn’t looking for a love match but when he heard Edith play the pianoforte, he knew he was in trouble, he had a wall of ice surrounding him to keep control, but with Edith the ice melted so he needed to keep away from her but after hearing what her brothers were up to decided to step in and help her.
I loved the twist of the story, Lady Edith Evans decided that she was a Rake and that she would partake in Rake lessons with Griffin, she loved to see the ice surrounding Griffin keep cracking to reveal a very passionate man.
Griffin and Edith had known each other as children, he was a friend of her brother. It wasn’t easy trying to convince her brother’s who kept interfering that they were a match but it was fun trying. Bonny, Griffin’s dog was a fun, welcome character within the story and who couldn’t love a person who had rescued a dog from harm.
What more can I say only that it’s a great read with lots going on. There were a lot of issues that both Edith and Griffin had to overcome along the way which added to their adventure into love and a HEA.
If you like a light hearted read with lots of fun, romance and laugh out loud moments. I would recommend you read this story.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read. Lady Edith is the rake in this story with a fake fiance. He needs to marry to clean up the title's reputation. She needs to marry because that is her father's wish. Her father cares for her but he thinks all Ladies must marry. Her brothers are the brutes about it. His father wants him to make up for his mistakes now that he is dying. Griffin has built a wall of ice to protect himself. Edith works to break that down. Finally he sees that he loves Edith and will protect her from her father, brothers and his father.
Edith and Griffin are two very different people - one is looking for love but has become disillusioned; the other is looking only to repair his family’s reputation by marrying a docile lady. As the two fight attraction to each other, a fake betrothal helps show them both that love is inevitable and grander than either of their insecurities. A romantic tale delivered well.
I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Edith tried to compromise herself believing she was in love. But the man is question loved and married another woman. Now her family is hellbent on marrying her off.
Griffin was not supposed to be the heir but his brother died and now his father's is dying. Before he dies, he demands that Griffin marry a respectable woman in order to restore the family reputation that he destroyed.
Edith convinces Griffin to fake and engagement to buy them both more time. But soon it becomes more.
Griffin was an okay character. He is very stoic because he wants to not be a rake like his brother and father. Edith was okay as well, regretful of her past actions but wanting to not settle for less than love.
3 maybe 3.5 stars.
Lady Edith has faced unrequited love, and with her father and brothers planning to organise a match, she is not certain what to do. When Griffin Paxton, the Earl of Eastern saves her from one of these suitors, she falls a bit in love with him, knowing that Griffin does not love her back. He finds her a breath of fresh air, yet he needs a proper wife. When Edith suggests they forge a fake engagement to appease both their fathers, Griffin can’t refuse, but soon their relationship turns into something more.
I loved the angst of this story and in particular, Griffin and his desire to appease everyone. His love for his mother and Edith, make him who he is. Edith is a unique character, who lives with a family full of men, who don’t see what she really wants. It is Griffin, who sees what the others don’t, that makes her love him. What a delightful couple.

I really enjoyed Edith and Griffin’s story. They both had hangups that got in the way of romance but managed to overcome them. Their characters were out of the ordinary which made the story much more interesting. 5 stars.
Rake lessons with Edith and Griffin
In the previous book, Lady Edith was looking for marriage for all the wrong reasons, and going about it in every wrong way possible. Griffin was one of the suitors suggested for her, despite the fact that she's known him since childhood. Griffin, however, is determined to avoid his father's and late brother's scandalous lifestyles so he's looking for an entirely different kind of wife.
Edith has now decided that she can't trust her impulses and won't settle for a man who doesn't want her as much as she wants him. But with her father insisting she marry as soon as possible and her brothers - the five of them collectively known as The Brutes - bringing every unsuitable suitor around hoping to finally get her married off, she's determined to maintain her independence as long as she can.
Griff is a man of icy control and free of passion. Or so he tries to be, anyway. He's truly afraid that once he lets go of his control, he may never get it back. Watching him gradually come unraveled is perhaps the best part of this book.
Edith is trying to remain level-headed about this fierce attraction, to protect her heart, to keep from repeating the mistakes of her past. She's still the same Edith we knew previously, but the author really did a fabulous job of showing her maturity throughout this book.
I loved the way he took refuge in his math and logic when trying to sort through all the confusing emotions, while Edith finds the same peace through her music. I also loved the addition of Bonny. Any man who is close to his dog is automatically a trusted hero in my book.
I really enjoyed watching these two be perfectly open and honest with each other even while they are each sorting through their feelings. Almost as if entirely against his will, Griff finds that he cannot be anything other than transparently honest with her. There were no "is this or isn't this" miscommunication between these two; their conflicts were openly addressed even when they hadn't yet figured out an answer.
The writing delved deeper into the hearts and souls of the characters than I remember from the earlier books, making this one my favorite of the series so far. There's plenty of steam between the two, despite (or perhaps because of) this being a "dual virgins" story.
I especially loved Edith's courage and her ingenious answer to his hypocritical father's blackmail. In the end, nothing can stop the course of true love, and Edith and Griffin's HEA was contagious, giving us a few more happy couples by the time we're done.
I adored getting to witness the dynamics between the couple slated for the next book. Almost completely insufferable and misogynistic here, that story's male lead had better have a considerable change in attitude by the time his story is told.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves Regency romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Lady Edith was featured as an important side character in the previous book in this series and I couldn’t wait to read her story. In that one she is seen as fixated on a man coming off as young and a little obsessed. After squandering most of her first season trying for one man she is shocked to learn that her father wants her married immediately. (He isn’t aware of her chasing.) He just sees no point in funding a second season and is happy to have one of her brothers arrange a marriage for her. Her only option is to quickly find someone before her brother does. Griffin Paxton, the Earl of Eastern is the son and brother of rakes. His father is dying and insists he finds a bride to repair the damage he caused to the family name. After Griffin and Edith meet up at party where he saves her from unwanted advances. They realize they can be the solutions to each others problems with a fake courtship and engagement. (Because that always works.)
The characters are likable. And it fits that because Griffin did not want to be anything like is father he is still a virgin. The two talk easily and honestly. No big misunderstandings. But some of the story seems very silly. Her father and brothers are over the top cartoonish in their woman are only good for marriage and bedding attitudes. And the whole pranking back with honey I’m not sure where that was going other than to make work for the servants. Also I thought the repetitive use of the term rake and rake-ess was over the top even if that is part of the theme of the story.
A likable historical romance. I’ve now read two of the books in the series but I haven’t loved them enough to seek out the earlier storylines. Thank you to NetGalley, Wolf Publishing and the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
The book is a good regency romance read. The story has a good story line. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry. A very nice and relaxing beach read.
